With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Presumably, if he needed a ring with the insane power of the silver age, he could just assimilate, no?
No, because Silver Age Power Rings aren't universal blanks that can be filled with any light like the one's Orange Lantern deals with, they're actual mechanisms that are specifically designed to channel the specific spectrum of light and only that spectrum.

Okay.

Provide a comic panel, or comment from a Silver Age writer, or anyone from that era, where that's a stated fact.

Then provide similar evidence that the Orange Ring can't do that.

We've seen other Paul's assimilate other power sources and devices.

I am currently wondering what an Absolute Universe version of OL would be like?
As I understand it, the Absolute versions of power rings are completely different to actual power rings. An Absolute plot would be to force the SI into a setting where he's compelled to work for a tyrannical state on things he doesn't care about but can't quit. New Order universe, maybe?

The Guardians gave Paul a Lantern here so they have to be compatible in some way. Mr.zoat has changed hundreds of small things or added others they aren't canon to the comics in the story. And I don't think power rings here would be more powerful here than they are on Earth 16, when everything in the story has been toned down to more sensible levels of powers. Even the Silver Age Kara we know doesn't seem to be much better than Earth 16 kryptonians apart from having better senses and super ventriloquism.

Also, Silver age Hal must find an ORANGE Lantern seriously confusing as at the time there were just Green Lanterns and Sinestro.
If I understand what I've read of Absolute Green Lantern (unlikely) then if he were instantiated as a local equivalent to an Orange Lantern, he could get Orange Enlightenment by default, which is kind of neat?

As I understand it, the Absolute versions of power rings are completely different to actual power rings.

They don't even have rings, generally. One character kind of ends up with an actual wedding ring as a focus of the light they wield, but it's, uh, contrived, really. Though, for vague reasons, that also means that character didn't get enlightened, so maybe a Paul instantiated with a ring would just have that deal instead. It's not like it would be any more arbitrary for him.

Rule 8 - no modern politics
Liberals will look you dead in the eyes and tell you that issue was good writing and that it fairly represented both sides.

This Liberal won't. I thought it was stupid characterization in the '70s, and said so in multiple letters pages, just as I tell the current crop of 'conservative' Trump cultists that they're full of shit.

Oi! You can talk shit about 70s politics all you like, but current day Trump is modern politics, and that's banned on this site. Any discussion of Trump must be 2006 era or earlier. I don't want to have to move to another website because someone else couldn't follow the rules.

"Correct. And that's because with the sole exception of the fact that he still calls a long-time Eskimo friend of his 'Pieface',-"

While it wasn't really that common knowledge at the time, or honestly even today, Eskimo is ALSO rather insulting on it's own as it comes not from them, but from different native groups further south.

Inuit or other more localized terms, generally translating to just 'The People' is what I taught to use growing up. Gov't both here and in the states are trying to shift the terminology, but it's got a fair bit of popular culture momentum to fight.

The guy has a point, not about saving aliens but about why the fuck Hal is bothering to arrest him.

Seriously, who gives a fuck if a slum lord's victim fights back. Hal could either be stopping a serious crime or taking a nap, not actively hurting morally innocent people.

God knows the poor schmuck is screwed as a black man being arrested in the 70's. Hal is basically being the incarnation of stupid lawful, to the point where Godwin's law obviously doesn't apply but damn does it not seem too far off.

He arrested him because he tried to murder an old man right in front of him.

Other color power rings only came around in 2008.

Which means it's up to you to prove they do exist in the Silver Age, not me to prove they don't.

As to the other thing, Silver Age rings and Power Batteries aren't crystalized light, they're advanced regular ass machines, and Paul can't assimilate machines unless they're like robots with souls.

The slumlord is an old man. Jordan had no idea why he was being attacked, and wouldn't be all that sympathetic if he had.

He wouldn't be upset about a slumlord making a bunch of poor people homeless and them fighting back when they very obviously can't use legal methods??

Kinda making the guy seem more and more in the right about Jordan.

He's not making them homeless. They just don't like the state of their homes or the level of rent, and if he isn't breaking the law then neither of those things are his or Jordan's problem. Murder is. Going to prison/being executed for murder would also be a problem for the residents.

Where would you even go at this point? AO3?
After SB, SV, and QQ, I can't really think of another similar site, other than largely fandom-specific spaces like Caer Azkaban or Beast's Lair. Most of the other high-traffic options (Royal Road, Scribblehub, AO3, FFN, Wattpad, etc.) are formatted in the vein of individual chapters with comment sections rather than continuous threads.

Absolute doesn't really have power rings, no.

Like, Jo has her powers linked to her wedding ring, but that's a specific case for her rather than a general thing.

For everyone else, the Power is more of an internal thing.

Honestly though, OL appearing with either an Orange Power Ring or an Orange Flame would be the kind of fittingly weird thing for Absolute Green Lantern? One of the themes in that series is that "We don't know the rules." Both in and out of universe, people don't have a convenient guide to the Lights or know everything that's going on with them. Hell, it wouldn't even be the first time a previously unknown Light showed up out of nowhere.

Yeah, so I'm guessing Sinestro's ring was just a very unusual shade of green.

As to the other thing, Silver Age rings and Power Batteries aren't crystalized light, they're advanced regular ass machines, and Paul can't assimilate machines unless they're like robots with souls
Yes, because everyone knows that him being able to do that would break every single rule of the Silver Age.

That's a good idea! Also, I'm not sure if Orange Lanterns/The Orange Light is even a thing in the Absolute Universe.

As I recall? Ekimo means basically "Eats Raw Meat" which they did, but is still insulting.

Yeah, so I'm guessing Sinestro's ring was just a very unusual shade of green.

Yes, because everyone knows that him being able to do that would break every single rule of the Silver Age.

Ol'Lefty had the only Yellow Ring and got the Quardians to make it for him by killing a Planet's worth of people.

Psychoprompt (part 10) New

I walk down the corridor in the station's green sector a little uncomfortably. Alright, there aren't many guards around-.

Those of you with military or policing experience, is it strange that there aren't guards around here?

Yes. / It's appalling. / Not necessarily.

Explain?

There's a security station nearby. In the event of an incident, their response time would be under a minute. On a station like this, they most likely rely on preventing weapons from coming aboard rather than directly observing the entire interior. Allowing different hostile species to have significant armaments would be a major security risk, and undermine Earthforce control.

Huh. Counterpoints?

There should still be a checkpoint at the entrances to important sections. Diplomatic passes and day passes.

I round a corner-. And then step back as a party of wide-haired centauri stroll past, taking up the entire width of the corridor. One takes the time to look at me as if I just farted in his face.

Surprisingly polite.

Alright, I could write a recommendation to the Chief of Security if you like.

I'm not using my one request for something like that.

No, no, that would actually help me.

I sigh as I approach the minbari section.

Are you sure we need to do this? It shouldn't take-.

Absolutely.

And is there a reason why I couldn't bring this up with the Ambassador's aide?

I will not speak with anyone from any Fane of Chudomo.

Can you tell me why?

Yes, but that would require me to educate you on four thousand years of minbari history. Minbari do not kill minbari, but we once did, and in more modern times we have other ways of expressing our displeasure.

She's only got the one aide, and I can't help but feel that-.

"Aah!"

I transition-. Some sort of internal garden. One minbari, bleeding from a knife wound in her abdomen. Two humans, faces covered, turning to me-.

A sonic stunner construct causes them to drop the knife and a… Cigar lighter? And then a hammer construct slams them into the wall. Scan. Concussion, nasal and auditory bleeding from the sonic energy, some cracked bones, nothing life threatening. Now the victim. Who is holding her wound with both hands while slumped against the wall, staring at me.

"Ma'am." I walk up to her and crouch down. "Do I have your permission to heal you?"

She gasps, grunts, and manages to nod.

Orange light flows from my hands… Minbari physiology isn't that complicated. I can see what's supposed to go where, copy and paste

And done. Ah-. No, I should leave the blood and the cut cloth. There needs to be some evidence-.

Darn it. I should have left a shallow cut-. Now when the crime scene people-. It's awkward, but-. Ah, never mind.

I cut off the orange glow and offer her my right hand. "Ma'am? Any other injuries?"

And she's staring at me… Ah, Minbari passengers?

Religious awe. / Shock. / If she doesn't know the ambassador, then it doesn't matter.

Right. I smile encouragingly.

Unless you find her attractive?

Ah… She's okay? Definitely more appealing than the narn and brakiri-.

Don't even think it. / Revolting! Minbari do not mate with aliens! / This isn't getting us that meeting. Focus, human.

Ah. "Matthew Underwood to security."

The minbari woman finally decides to take my hand, and I help her upright. Her other hand is still feeling the site of her wound, her eyes switching from it to my face as she tries to formulate… A coherent thought.

"This is a secure line, pal."

"Demonstrably not."

"Listen-."

"A minbari woman has been assaulted in green…" I look at the wall. "Ten. Please send security.. and a medic."

"En route. You see where the attackers went?"

I glance at them. They haven't moved.

"They haven't gone anywhere. I'm afraid that I was a little rough with them… That's covered by Defence Of Another, right?"

"Sure. You just stay put."

"Thank you."

End.

"What did you do to me?"

The minbari woman has her head tilted curiously, her eyes slightly narrowed.

I renew my smile. "Absolutely nothing. The knife caused a shallow cut. I got the jump on your attackers and was able to slam their heads into the wall before they could react."

"Minbari do not lie."

"Can you editorialise?"

She looks away, weighing things up. "I.. believe that I can."

"Thank you."

"But… Between the two of us…"

"An elder race gave me a magic ring. Also, no guidance on what I'm supposed to do with it, and dropped me off on an uninhabited planet."

She blinks rapidly, drawing herself up slightly. "Being chosen by the First Ones is an honour. Perhaps they have such faith in you that they feel that further guidance is unnecessary?"

"I've spent a year reorganising my life, and the best idea I've been able to come up with for the long term is go back to being an administrative assistant, because at least I understood how that works."

She stares wide-eyed at me for a moment.

Uh, guys, did I just-?

"Hahahahaha!"

John/Delenn/Londo: No, it's really not.

There's that Minbari humor.

Ah, The War Prayer. That's half of the attack on Shaal Mayan foiled, and with the pepetrators...concussed, things might get wrapped up rather more quickly.

And Mayan presumably has a new subject for her poetry.

...the minor butterfly is that the B-plot may also be derailed, in which case Londo loses some character development.
