With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

If Kara II is a comicbook fan from Earth Prime in the body of a Silver Age Kryptonian, she'd similarly have reasons to hate Lex (and it could explain some of her behavior, as could her being somehow connected to the Queen of Fables). Of course, her being an insert of that type is a bit odd, but not completely out-of-line for this story.

Turns out Zoat has been married for like, 5 years, and he finally agreed to put her into the fic.

Harem Tragedy (part 8) New
Late Winter, IC 690

Diabo stands facing my shrine, staring at the place where my ring had rested for years and frantically trying to take his mind off his forthcoming Triumph.

"If the other gods hate you, why do they permit you this?"

"A modest temple in an out-of-the-way location? What do you think that they should have done?"

"If… You are bound to that ring… Why not destroy it?"

"Because then I would appear in the realm of the gods, with access to my full power. I would kill or bind the gods I disapproved of and crown myself king of the others. Then my new pantheon would work to set this world to rights."

He stares down at me.

"What?"

"You have that power?"

"Not like this, no."

"But… You could slay Hardy?"

"The gods of this world are powerful and wilful, I grant them that much. They are also ignorant and lazy, self-indulgently playing with mortals for entertainment and self-glorification. I am not ignorant and I am not lazy and their weaknesses are vulnerabilities I can ruthlessly exploit."

"Is..? That why Giselle backs down whenever you..?"

"Partially. It's more because she shares their vices. How often do you think she encounters something that can actually hurt her?"

"Few things can harm an Apostle."

"Fighting things that cannot hurt you does not demonstrate courage. Four hundred years of life and the most she can say about her life is that she woke a dragon up one time. I had worn a ring much like this one for a year and a day before I slew two Apostle-equivalents. And honestly? If it wasn't for the social significance of the event I doubt that it would stand out in my memory. Someone who takes power should do so with a purpose, not because 'why not?'."

"Uh…" He contemplates the physical structure of my ring for a moment. "Is that something that you want me to do?"

"No. I find brute force solutions inelegant, and slaying or binding gods would probably cause all sorts of unpleasant knock-on effects across the physical world. It's better to work at it gradually." Hm. "Up to a point. If we reach the stage where your magicians can create a type of device called a Branch of Yggdrasil then we can consider taking a more aggressive approach."

"I'm sure that will take a very long time, whatever it is."

"Yes, I believe that you're right."

"What does it..? Do?"

"It would connect the magic systems of this world to the magic systems of my world of origin. In practical terms, I could regain a physical body and act independently, as well as gaining the ability to call upon my allies to assist me."

"I.. see."

"Oh, don't worry. I'd get you a new ring. It would have all the same powers, it just wouldn't be my vessel."

"Ah. T-thank you for your consideration."

"I seldom abandon projects when they're half-complete."

"What..? What exactly happens if the other gods try and..? Stop you?"

"That depends on what they do exactly. If they try and involve themselves in the affairs of the world in a constructive way then they're doing what I'd want them to do anyway. If they try escalating against my operations directly then I'll remind them why they did this to me in the first place."

"Why..? Did they do this to you in the first place?"

"You'd have to ask them. I suspect that it was a combination of wanting to deny me the ability to change things as I wanted and amusement at punishing my 'hubris'. And… Perhaps a belief that if I existed as they do I would inevitably come to share their perspective."

"What..? What exactly would happen to the Saderan Empire if you were..? Freed?"

"You would be my primary agent, so I imagine whatever you wanted. Alternately, if you preferred doing something else with your life, I could handle it myself. But as I said, that is at best a very long way off."

"And none of your allies-?"

"…out of my way!"

Diabo turns around as someone-. Eithne, bellows something from the antechamber. She had best not be taking her disgruntlement out on my priests. I've got a few new ones these days and I haven't learned all of their names yet.

"The Prince-."

"I'll find him myself!"

Diabo looks around, but this isn't a big temple and there aren't any other exits. "Can you close the door?"

"Yes, but it's not that thick. I really think it would be best just to see what's bothering her so much." He doesn't move, and-. Are the walls shaking? Gosh, she must be in a bit of a mood. "Look, she did a good and faithful job during the campaign, and that means that you're obliged to answer her concerns."

"What? I'll uphold our deal, that doesn't mean-."

"She has to continue to believe that you will uphold the deal. And that requires you to perform a degree of personnel management."

He nods hesitantly, and walks towards-.

Chief Eithne stomps into my inner sanctum, gourd of… Rotgut clasped in her right hand. She waves it at Diabo. Ah, no, she's the one waving.
"Hey! You!"

"Yes?"

"Your brother! Queen Tyuule!"

"Yes..? He took her as a sex slave after winning his war against your people. I've tried-."

"A slave! HAH!"

She doesn't sound happy-.

She throws the gourd at the floor, shattering it and spilling what's left of her liquor across the flagstones.

"We all THOUGHT she sold us out so that SHE'D be safe! We all thought it was HER fault!"

I feel the emotion drain from Diabo. "Only someone who doesn't know Zorzal would surrender to him. Even I'd consider hemlock preferable. I suppose it's her fault for not knowing that, but that's about it." Diabo sniffs. "He boasted about it, once. He said that he'd still have won, but that the queen convinced herself that if he got her that he'd be merciful to the rest. I didn't realise that you didn't kn-."

"WHY!? WHY?!"

"He has no morals or compassion, but he also has no fear." He walks slowly towards her. "If you told him that his cruelty might cause a slave to stab him tomorrow he'd probably say 'but that's tomorrow' or 'that's why I wear armour' or 'not if I stab them first'. And then he'd stab them to put fear into the rest. And that's why I need to become Emperor. Because if he does that as a prince, he'll do worse once our father dies."

Diabo bows his head.

"I'm getting a Triumph tomorrow. I made a pact with our father that if I mastered black powder weapons for Sadera then I'd be made Crown Prince. Zorzal might have conquered your people but he spent Saderan blood like chipped copper pieces to do it. My victory was far more clean, and we gained a tributary and full coffers from it rather than a lot of wasteland we can't protect and don't have the people to settle. Soon, Zorzal will start trying to kill me, and I'll have to kill him."

"He's scum! He's an oath-breaker!"

"He's my brother. And plenty amongst both of our peoples have done worse. Don't get histrionic just because you were on the receiving end this time. And sober up." She gasps as the effects of the alcohol are expunged from her body. "You need to make a good showing to convince the senate to put our pact into practice, and you won't do that if you're drunk."

She takes a moment to process what she's been told.

"You need your brother dead?"

Diabo walks past her towards the exit.

"Not yet."

She falls in behind him. "I want to be the one who kills him."

"I'll see what I can do."

I really, really, really want to see this happen.

Can anyone remind me who Paul is referring to here?

"If the other gods hate you, why do they permit you this?"
Acting through a mortal agent? A temple where people can learn his doctrine? The mere luxury of continued existence? It probably all comes down to whatever rules their game of divinity involves. Likely convoluted and annoying ones where OL is concerned.

"A modest temple in an out-of-the-way location? What do you think that they should have done?"

"If… You are bound to that ring… Why not destroy it?"
Presumably it's something far worse than letting him exist this way. Something they think will 'tame' him or leave him helpless.

"Because then I would appear in the realm of the gods, with access to my full power. I would kill or bind the gods I disapproved of and crown myself king of the others. Then my new pantheon would work to set this world to rights."

He stares down at me.
Ah, right, then. They're that afraid of you. Probably took one look at his memories and shat themselves over the threats OL's faced. To these guys, something like Darkseid or the Reach would be an eldritch horror.

"What?"

"You have that power?"
Remember Assimilation, Diabo? It works on anything. Perhaps even gods. 😏

"Not like this, no."

"But… You could slay Hardy?"
The deity who opened the gate and started all this trouble? Well, OL kind of owes her one for enabling him to gain a wielder. But given that she seems to act like a spiled child, I suspect he'd spank her, then offer her a chance to sort herself out and do good.

Giselle probably know from Hardy or whatever divine sense she might possess that OL is a potential godslayer.

"Partially. It's more because she shares their vices. How often do you think she encounters something that can actually hurt her?"

"Few things can harm an Apostle."
Hardly impressive. Few things can harm a Lantern if they're on their toes. Simply being durable doesn't earn respect...

"Fighting things that cannot hurt you does not demonstrate courage. Four hundred years of life and the most she can say about her life is that she woke a dragon up one time. Klarion and Nabu, as @Stsword noted. Though hardly the most dangerous things on Earth other than their extensive magic.

You see that sort of thing happen in God of War, although it's not particularly dwelled on during Kratos' roaring rampage of revenge. But the Olympian territory got all kinds of effed up.

"I'm sure that will take a very long time, whatever it is."

"Yes, I believe that you're right."
Yeah, that sounds like a quest that takes a lifetime.

"What does it..? Do?"

"It would connect the magic systems of this world to the magic systems of my world of origin. In practical terms, I could regain a physical body and act independently, as well as gaining the ability to call upon my allies to assist me."
Interesting, though, that he knows of an object that can link him back to Earth Sixteen (or so I assume?) Admittedly, closest thing I could find was an item from Overlord. ...Also a dude's cool staff. 😄

"I.. see."

"Oh, don't worry. I'd get you a new ring. It would have all the same powers, it just wouldn't be my vessel."
Heh. That would be his first proper Lantern recruit from this world. Perhaps that's what set him on the path of recruiting other 'fictional' characters across the omniverse?

"Ah. T-thank you for your consideration."

"I seldom abandon projects when they're half-complete."
Though he used to get easily distracted while working on a few dozen at once... I guess being stuck this way for so long has given him focus.

Whether they enjoy the process is best left to the reader's imagination, especially if killing them would be deleterious to the world. Certainly, they might wish they were dead...

In other words, they were being dicks. All they did was earn his ire.

"What..? What exactly would happen to the Saderan Empire if you were..? Freed?"

"You would be my primary agent, so I imagine whatever you wanted. Alternately, if you preferred doing something else with your life, I could handle it myself. But as I said, that it at best a very long way off."
A job for the future, then.

"And none of your allies-?"

"…out of my way!"

Diabo turns around as someone-. Eithne, bellows something from the antechamber. She had best not be taking her disgruntlement out on my priests. I've got a few new ones these days and I haven't learned all of their names yet.
Huh, trying to work without an AI, I see. Presumably because right now he is the Ring's AI...

"The Prince-."

"I'll find him myself!"

Diabo looks around, but this isn't a big temple and there aren't any other exits. "Can you close the door?"
Oh, don't be so worried, Diabo. This is your 'god's place of power, and you can fly beyond her reach. What can she do to you besides yell?

"Yes, but it's not that thick. I really think it would be best just to see what's bothering her so much." He doesn't move, and-. Are the walls shaking? Gosh, she must be in a bit of a mood. "Look, she did a good and faithful job during the campaign, and that means that you're obliged to answer her concerns."
...Okay, that's a bit of a reasonable cause for worry. Just how strong are these lapine ladies?

"What? I'll uphold our deal, that doesn't mean-."

"She has to continue to believe that you will uphold the deal. And that requires you to perform a degree of personnel management."
In other words, man up and take charge?

He nods hesitantly, and walks towards-.

Chief Eithne stomps into my inner sanctum, gourd of… Rotgut clasped in her right hand. She waves it at Diabo. Ah, no, she's the one waving.
"Hey! You!"
Ah, drunk, annoyed and on the warpath. Logical cause for concern.

Huh. Okay, that's a bad end just waiting to happen. At least this time things might turn out better for her.

"Yes..? He took her as a sex slave after winning his war against your people. I've tried-."

"A slave! HAH!"
Okay, that's more than mere outrage over a queen being a slave. Something deeper is at play.

She doesn't sound happy-.

She throws the gourd at the floor, shattering it and spilling what's left of her liquor across the flagstones.

"We all THOUGHT she sold us out so that SHE'D be safe! We all thought it was HER fault!"
Ah. Bitterness over the perceived betrayal and misplaced rage at her existence.

I feel the emotion drain from Diabo. "Only someone who doesn't know Zorzal would surrender to him. Even I'd consider hemlock preferable. I suppose it's her fault for not knowing that, but that's about it." Diabo sniffs. "He boasted about it, once. He said that he'd still have won, but the that the queen convinced herself that if he got her that he'd be merciful to the rest. I didn't realise that you didn't kn-."
And before now, he'd have had no way to do anything about it. Hell, Zorzal is a big enough dickhead to refuse to turn her over to him... He's gonna have a lot of karma headed his way.

"WHY!?

What if a powerful, talented leader... Is followed by a madman. Rome saw that several times.

Ah, you've got to love when a plan comes together like that.

And with any luck, Zorzal will be so overconfident that he messes up in public.

She takes a moment to process what she's been told.

"You need your brother dead?"
While killing every prospect for the throne upon ascension might be excessive, as the Ottoman Turks once did, in this case, well...

Diabo walks past her towards the exit.

"Not yet."
First, you let him tank his value so much that no-one will complain when you slide in the knife.

She falls in behind him. "I want to be the one who kills him."

"I'll see what I can do."
I think her Queen might have a higher claim on that honour, but she may not survive the fighting...

Well, good to see Diabo so focused on his future goals. This is how you get an emperor who can rule well, rather than a meathead who is just as happy to slaughter people himself as he is to give orders for the same. And with OL's help, he'll be able to drag the Empire into a more modern footing, assuming the gods don't lose interest and nobble them...

But as I said, that it at best a very long way off."
But as I said, that is at best a very long way off."
...but the that the queen convinced herself...
Unneeded 'the'.

Don't forget the Zeus thing.

Remember Assimilation, Diabo? It works on anything. Even gods. 😏

I don't think we've seen him assimilate a god before.

He did assimilate that 666 version of Nabu, who does have godlike power.

Though branding does work on divine beings.

I think the reasonable presumption would be "if it has desires, it can be Assimilated."

Whether or not the ring holds enough charge to complete the process before it runs out, of course, being the outstanding open question.

Is this the first time Diabo has used the orange light to incidentally affect someone else?
That wasn't accidental.
In the spoiler box it says Early Winter.
But as I said, that is at best a very long way off."

Thank you, corrected.

When the thing you're on is shaking, it's like the world is shaking.

This scenario is something I'd like to see more often. "Sealed evil in a can," NO! Step aside, Wuya from Xiaolin Showdown, we need Sealed GOOD, more forces of GOOD trapped in a magic box, unable to exert their true power. Specifically in a setting where apathetic and malevolent superpowers are in charge.
I'm reminded of a few cartoons with one-off episodes where the force for good DIES to cause a lasting change, or is just a silent, emotive macguffin like the fairy from Samurai Jack. Paul is a lovely mentor. He reins in his snark, while still showing English wit.

It's a massive shame Diabo suffers in silence around so many others though, Paul his one real confidant. Building someone else up to that level COULD happen with the main girls from GATE… With the right author.

Anyway. Does anyone have fanfic, novel, comic, anime…? Any suggestions for this kind of back and forth? Something more mature than the swordsman from Wakfu and his weapon.

it's one of the ideas implanted on his head by Mother of Mercy's future illusion, I think. Paul eventually plans to use it so he can use Earth's magisphere usable even in space, seeing as magic is the planet's primary export in excellence.

seeing as it is basically a portal that drags mana through it, it seems likely that it could also work as beacon between two different magical planets too.

Well, power rangers has this guy called 'Zordon.' Although he has a habit of using child soldiers, so maybe he doesn't count.

In JJK, there's a while where Gojo is sealed - although when he gets unsealed, the author promptly kills him.

Grayven ends up as a Zordon somewhere along the line.

There's more examples, but I can't remember them right now.

I'm curious on how Paul got trapped in the first place, by this point he's very powerful, experienced and well equipped. Just how did the gods of this world trap him?

I believe he said they caught him off-guard. He currently doesn't have a way to turn himself back, but he'll definitely prepare for something like this after he's done here.

I suppose it depends on how you look at things. This is the gods world, they are the ones ultimately in charge. They specifically only bring in mortals from other worlds because they see the world as a garden, and mortals as no different from the trees, bushes, flowers and other plants you'd put in such a garden. And if a mortal culture or civilization starts growing in ways they don't want, then just like with a tree that's growing a limb in the wrong place, they do some pruning to not mess up the image of whatever they want their garden to be.

Is this fair to the mortals stuck living under them? Not remotely, but I repeat, it's not their world. It's the gods world and they weren't under any obligation to warn the mortals from whatever worlds they took them from that while they could live in the world on the other side of the Gate if they moved there, it would only ever be under the rules of the gods of said world.

In that way, I wouldn't say they are guilty of laziness because they are pretty good "gardeners" from their perspective, even if they are guilty of entrapment.

I'm imagining the gods telling Paul this in an arrogant way only to be ignored, incapacitated, and, depending on how abhorrent he finds them, destroyed before he changes the world to one he finds more preferable. The only difference locals will see is that Paul actually takes their input seriously and doesn't care about being worshipped. The fact that the gods were the only "gardeners" around before Paul showed up doesn't automatically make them good ones.

Paul is someone who's just as guilty of treating the world of Falmart as a "game" as the gods. Only, Paul wants to play Civilization but the gods won't let him because that would ruin the game they've been playing for thousands of years.

Remember, the oldest gods, the ones that aren't ascended mortals, are the ones who started the "garden", and they are the only ones native to the world. Every mortal race(unless you count the chimera people) came from different worlds that reached this world via a Gate that the gods opened. So it's not like the mortals are their actual "children", they are just set pieces the gods gracelessly "allow" to live in their world.
