With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I smile as Roy's spaceship pulls up alongside Lantern Taranna and I. Apparently we haven't interdicted whatever it uses for its non-boom tube FTL. Which is something that we're going to need to fix, but if it's a system that no one else uses that could have definite advantages. We could build an actual fleet while Earth was still protected.

My ring shimmers.

"Go ahead."

"This ship's sensors were built in the seventies. Can you see what it is? I mean, did they just get lost, or are they actually here for a fight?"

"Don't know. They're not transmitting, either an S.O.S. or a greeting. And they haven't responded to my attempts to communicate. I don't recognise the ship, which… Is odd, because I've got Green Lantern Corps and NEMO ship registries on my ring. It's armed, but the emplacements are too small for it to be a dedicated warship. And its shields are too weak."

"Pirates?"

"The only pirate group active in this Sector is the Black Circle. And I think what's left of them would have more sense than to come here. Besides, it's the wrong shape."

"What's that mean?"

"Pirates don't want to fight actual naval ships. They're in it to make money, not win fights. Destroying an enemy ship usually isn't profitable. So they usually focus on speed and stealth over toughness and endurance, because they want to get past patrols without being detected, hit their target, grab what they can and then get away before they can get caught. If they have a larger ship, it's either a cargo ship they bring in after their target is disabled or their base of operations."

"So it's not a military ship or a mothership. Is it damaged?"

"There's some wear and tear, but I can't see any battle damage."

"Who's inside?"

"Unsurprisingly, my scans are being disrupted."

"Really? That's pretty surprising to me. I thought power ring scans were about as good as it gets."

"Any malefactor above a certain level pretty much has to have a way to block Lantern scans. Or the Green Lantern Corps would step on them before they became a real problem. I could probably bypass it, but that's a fairly aggressive move for what could just be some lost explorers."

"No Anti-Life?"

"Not that I can feel, and that would extend outside of their ship."

"They're definitely headed for Earth?"

I generate a construct of their approach route. "They'll be here in a few weeks. And while they're not accelerating, they're not slowing down or turning around to get out of the area covered by the interdiction system."

"Alright, so are we going to go see them?"

"Not unless the United Nations appointed you Ambassador-at-Large. This requires-."

Warning! Will detected!

"
-someone from-" I turn around and spot the approaching green light. "-the Justice League."

The green arrives, and-.

"Lantern Stewart?"

He's already studying a construct image of the approaching ship. "Problem?"

"I was assuming that Lantern Jordan would take this one."

"Used all his hours."

"Guy?"

"He's in Sector One Six Three Four, keeping an eye on your friend Malvolio."

"You not gunna ask about Savenlovich too?"

"No, no, you've got seniority."

"Nice of you to remember that." He glances at Lantern Taranna. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Lantern Taranna. She was one of my first recruits, actually. She's been working reconstruction and security. Taranna, this is Lantern Stewart."

"Hello."

He considers her for a moment. "What, you've never seen a Green Lantern before?"

She shakes her head. "No."

"Oh." He nods. "Right. We can't operate in Reach space-."

"I don't come from anywhere near there. Illustres, why is he taking the lead?"

"Green Lanterns are better known across most of this galaxy, and he's a member of the Justice League."

He snorts. "That all I get?"

"He also has a couple of years more experience than me, though I think I have him beaten in terms of variety of experience." I shrug. "They won't answer me, but perhaps they'll be prepared to talk to a Green Lantern."

Lantern Stewart nods. "I hope." He raises his right fist. "This is the Green Lantern of Sector Two Eight One Four to unidentified vessel. This system is not open to visitors. Identify yourselves."

Taranna looks puzzled. I raise my eyebrows. "Problem?"

"We're being a lot more passive than Lanterns are in NEMO space. If a ship like that appeared near one of the reconstruction worlds, we would have ripped its thrusters off if it failed to respond."

"Well, the difference is that NEMO space borders a war zone, where as this is a peaceful Sector. The risk is lower, so it's worth being a bit more generous when it comes to responding to the unknown."

"If you fail to respond, your vessel will be boarded and impounded, and your crew may face criminal charges."

A moment passes, and then his construct shifts into the shape of a woman's face. Humanoid, as far as I can see, but I don't recognise her.

"Green Lantern." She sounds like she is only reluctantly talking to him, but that's more than I managed. "You are a police officer for this world?"

"For this region of space. And unless you've got a very good reason to be here, I'm going to need you to turn your ship around."

"Yes. I do. My name is Cara Yat. My son has been kidnapped, and I have reason to believe that he is being held here. I want him returned, at once."

Taranna naturally clad in a vacuum-sealed suit of power armour, of course. I would expect she is smart enough not to rely solely on her Ring, after all. On the upside, this is a nice chance to introduce them, I suppose. When they get a spare minute.

My ring shimmers.

"Go ahead."

"This ship's sensors were built in the seventies. Can you see what it is? I mean, did they just get lost, or are they actually here for a fight?"
Probably a good place to start updating the systems of the ship, then. Wonder if he's named it yet or not?

"Don't know. They're not transmitting, either an S.O.S. or a greeting. And they haven't responded to my attempts to communicate. I don't recognise the ship, which… Is odd, because I've got Green Lantern Corps and NEMO ship registries on my ring. It's armed, but the emplacements are too small for it to be a dedicated warship. A species just getting off the ground in FTL travel, perhaps? Though I imagine if they're from a neighbouring system, they'd have been some measure of known quantity.

"Pirates?"

"The only pirate group active in this Sector is the Black Circle. And I think what's left of them would have more sense than to come here. Besides, it's the wrong shape."

"What's that mean?"
Not a combat design, then. I assume any weapons emplacements would be recognisable.

Yeah, getting into a fight means you've failed to get away cleanly. Thus putting your profits at risk along with your clean escape.

"So it's not a military ship or a mothership. Is it damaged?"

"There's some wear and tear, but I can't see any battle damage."
So he's got optical imaging on it, at least.

"Who's inside?"

"Unsurprisingly, my scans are being disrupted."

"Really? That's pretty surprising to me. I thought power ring scans were about as good as it gets."
Ah, right, Roy hasn't worked with the Team much while OL was a member. Those dang scry wards... 😤

"Any malefactor above a certain level pretty much has to have a way to block Lantern scans. Or the Green Lantern Corps would step on them before they became a real problem. I could probably bypass it, but that's a fairly aggressive move for what could just be some lost explorers."
And OL hasn't found any good filtering for some of the Earth-developed methods for said concealment yet, either...

"No Anti-Life?"

"Not that I can feel, and that would extend outside of their ship."
At least he's able to detect that much.

"They're definitely headed for Earth?"

I generate a construct of their approach route. "They'll be here in a few weeks. And while they're not accelerating, they're not slowing down or turning around to get out of the area covered by the interdiction system."
So either their drive has momentum-cancelling systems or they're not planning on stopping in-system, or they would be braking.

"Alright, so are we going to go see them?"

"Not unless the United Nations appointed you Ambassador-at-Large. This requires-."
Since officially, OL is a League-affiliate and Taranna is a guest.

Warning! Will detected!

"
-someone from-" I turn around and spot the approaching green light. "-the Justice League."
Ah, who's got the job for this one, I wonder?

The green arrives, and-.

"Lantern Stewart?"
Ah, John. Logical, I guess. Hal and Guy are Honour Guard rather than Sector lanterns, so they're probably not gonna get the first ping for 'interdiction perimeter of home system breached'.

He's already studying a construct image of the approaching ship. "Problem?"

"I was assuming that Lantern Jordan would take this one."
...Then again, Hal could have pulled rank.

"Used all his hours."

"Guy?"

"He's in Sector One Six Three Four, keeping an eye on your friend Malvolio."
...Well, no hard feelings about that stolen Ring, I hope?

"You not gunna ask about Savenlovich too?"
Oh, yeah, she's around now. To be fair, she's kind of forgettable, not having had any memorable appearance on-screen here.

"No, no, you've got seniority."

"Nice of you to remember that." He glances at Lantern Taranna. "Who's your friend?"
I suppose OL didn't think to give the Greenies an update that other Orange Lanterns would be in-system.

"This is Lantern Taranna. She was one of my first recruits, actually. She's been working reconstruction and security. Taranna, this is Lantern Stewart."

"Hello."
Ah, the hesitant politeness of meeting someone from another department, so to speak.

He considers her for a moment. "What, you've never seen a Green Lantern before?"

She shakes her head. "No."
Even if the Greenies had poked around their planet, they probably got waved off from the abuses because of 'Religious Rights and Privileges' or some such...

"Oh." He nods. "Right. We can't operate in Reach space-."

"I don't come from anywhere near there. Illustres, why is he taking the lead?"
...Because Orange Lanterns aren't really space cops in the sense Greenies are. And this is definitely a police matter.

"Green Lanterns are better known across most of this galaxy, and he's a member of the Justice League."

He snorts. "That all I get?"
Patience, he does need a moment to consider his words.

"He also has a couple of years more experience than me, though I think I have him beaten in terms of variety of experience." I shrug. "They won't answer me, but perhaps they'll be prepared to talk to a Green Lantern."

Lantern Stewart nods. "I hope." He raises his right. "This is the Green Lantern of Sector Two Eight One Four to unidentified vessel. This system is not open to visitors. Identify yourselves."
An interesting way to put it, but this is really one of the first times anyone's rolled up since the Anti-Life who wasn't invited (or snuck in.)

Taranna looks puzzled. I raise my eyebrows. "Problem?"

"We're being a lot more passive than Lanterns are in NEMO space. If a ship like that appeared near one of the reconstruction worlds, we would have ripped its thrusters off if it failed to respond."
Yes, and this isn't a NEMO area of operation. Better recheck your rules of engagement, Lantern.

Presumably being hauled off to Oa rather than to Earth?

A moment passes, and then his construct shifts into the shape of a woman's face. Humanoid, as far as I can see, but I don't recognise her.

"Green Lantern." She sounds like she is only reluctantly talking to him, but that's more than I managed. "You are a police officer for this world?"
Doesn't tell them much, as a large part of the galactic population is very humanoid. Although her demeanour is very much not that of a lost traveller, I note.

"For this region of space. And unless you've got a very good reason to be here, I'm going to need you to turn your ship around."

"Yes. I do. My name is Cara Yat. My son has been kidnapped, and I have reason to believe that he is being held here. I want him returned, at once."
Seriously? That's one determined mother...

I'm guessing that is Tessog's ship, from Sodam's origin story, repaired and flown off. I wonder how she learned he was here, though? This could be a very troublesome situation, especially since OL recruited him for his own safety based on metaknowledge. Daxamite xenophobia would have messed up his development badly. 🤔 Wonder if his Mother is facing trouble on Daxam for doing this, though.

I'm having flashbacks to the absolutely detestable woman that was (or is?) the mother of Rama Khan's heir, if anybody else also remembers her.

And weren't they hypocritically amish or something in Daxam? How does she know he's here and where did she get the spaceship from?

This sounds like it will be another debate between the Justice League and the Illustres, for some reason.

And weren't they hypocritically amish or something in Daxam
Yep.

They still used some kind of robot for defense and their leaders apparently still used some tech.
How does she know he's here and where did she get the spaceship from?

With the Reach war going on it's possible that Paul has become very famous due to his high rank in the OLC, so information about him, like his homeworld, would become public knowledge to various worlds.

For anybody who can't remember, like me, Sodom Yot is the other Orange Lantern that Paul brought to Earth, if I'm not mistaken. The fact that she got here so soon after he was deployed here is giving me questions I think need asked.

Missing word 'right hand' or 'right fist', I suspect is meant here.
Thank you, corrected.
And weren't they hypocritically amish or something in Daxam? How does she know he's here and where did she get the spaceship from?
Not exactly. They have caches of advanced technology in sealed vaualts, to be used if their isolation is distrubed. Their rulers live pretty much the same way as everyone else.
'Racist space karen' wants her 'progressive son' back into the 'space conservative south'
Welp *grab popcorn*
They're really more space Amish.

I think you're making a lot of unwarranted assumptions here.

In the comics Sodom Yat befriended an alien who crash landed on Daxam.

His parents murdered the alien and had his body stuffed and displayed in a museum.

After visiting that museum and seeing his childhood friend stuffed like roadkill is what made him determined enough to get off of that shithole that it attracted a green lantern ring.

Unless Zoat is downplaying their murderous xenophobia by quite a lot, comparing her to a Karen from the South is insufficiently judgmental.

And while Zoat is known to whitewash villains he likes, that piece of shit Rama Khan being a good example, I'm not sure what Zoat would find to like about murderous xenophobic (mostly) luddite fanatical bigots.

Oh yes. If you remember, the SI appeared just as Sodam's father was about to kill Tessog.

I'm not sure exactly what you think Rama Khan did wrong, unless you believe that he should have let everyone in his country die rather than stop his heir leaving.

He sent his thugs into another country to illegally kidnap his heir's mother and when they faced resistance because the mother was in an Amazon run women's shelter they sicced an Earth Elemental on the Amazons that attacked them with enough force that the earthen material was fused with their flesh and they died slow, painful deaths because their was nothing the Justice League could do for them even with their available healing technologies.

So there is the attempted kidnapping, multiple acts of brutal murder, and in so doing rationally would have caused an international incident since he ignored India's sovereignty and committed acts that the Amazons would have been well within their rights to take as a declaration of war.

That's the starting point of his storyline.

Then when this results in magical catastrophe, he openly admits that he doesn't give the slightest shit if everyone else on Earth dies as long as his magic can protect his people. So he's a shit human being.

Then the storyline ends with him offending his god, the land of Jarhanpur, because the arrogant moron decided that his judgement was infallible and what does the five thousands year plus old god that gives him his power know?

So he's an international criminal (including murder), a shitty human being in general, and an idiot who was incompetent at his job to boot.

What did he do wrong? Everything, he failed to do anything right for the entire storyline.

I swear if this turns into a custody battle chapter, I'm on the first plane to England so I can track you down and dope slap you. Also why didn't she track him down to where he was for God knows how many chapters before this, I don't think Earth is that much closer.

Really hope this isn't the main plot of the episode. This is a 'one conversation' problem. Possibly followed by a 'one very one-sided fight' problem if Cara is particularly idiotic and stubborn.

The ship may not be that fast, she may have had to figure out how it works, she may have not known where Paul's world is until fairly recently.

Are you talking about the comic version, or this story's version?

In the comic version, he sent police officers. It's not clear whether his country was officially part of India or not, but given the lack of any official protest from the Indian government it seems more likely that they either had a legitimate warrant or were actively persuing a suspect than they just decided to walk over the border and grab someone while wearing a clearly identifiable uniform. Remember, the Justice League were easily able to work out who they were.

And as I showed last time someone claimed that the Amazons were murdered, they're the ones who charged the police with their swords drawn. The police shot them in self-defence. The police weren't there to kill anyone. They didn't even do anything to the boy's mother, who they had far more reason to be angry at.

Earth elemental? I don't remember that. I remember him using his own connection to the spirit of the land to grant himself a powerful body, but that was after the Diana decided to attack him and after he both showed them that the boy was fine and explained why he did what he did. All of the negative consequences for the universe in general that followed were because Diana refused to believe him when he spoke the truth. That was why her lasso broke.

Her final conclusion was 'okay, you were being honest, but what you're doing is still wrong' and it resulted in the country being rendered uninhabitable and its formerly prosperous people turned into refugees. But the boy could go and be an Untouchable in India with his mother rather than a demigod prince, so that's alright. And if Diana had owned that, I'd accept that as a conclusion to the story while still disagreeing that it was morally correct. Instead, she was just and smug and self-righteous as she was at the start.

Diana caused the catastrophe. She openly disbelieved someone who was bound by the Lasso of Truth. Rama Khan couldn't have deliberately broken it on his own if he'd wanted to. That was spelled out very clearly in the story. Diana initially blamed him because she couldn't accept her own culpability but she was objectively wrong. The worst thing he did is say that the rest of the world getting messed up wasn't his problem, except... He's right. He didn't cause it. He hasn't taken on any obligation to anywhere except Jarhanpur. He has no way to fix the lasso, which is what was needed in order to stop things getting worse, if he even knew that was the problem, which he probably didn't. And given that the Justice League caused it by picking a fight with him, I don't think his atitude is unreasonable.

See you in a couple of days. Make sure you don't bring any ninja weapons with you, those are super-illegal in this country for some reason.

The entire arc is just awful writing in so many ways. The JLA without batman is shown being spineless idiots, fully acknowledging how wrong Diana is but being unwilling to stop her. Then when her temper tantrum threatens to destroy the world, they take precisely zero steps to punish or hold Diana accountable for her actions. And the reason Diana almost destroys the world? Apparently her lasso doesn't just compel truth, but is in fact the conceptual embodiment of truth itself, which if broken corrupts the very fabric of existence. Unfortunately for the world, it can break if it's owner shows anything less complete certainty in their actions. Why Diana has something that vital let alone uses it makes no goddamn sense and the writing doesn't even attempt to justify it.

Honestly, Rama Khan is the most sympathetic character in this mess of a story. He comes off as a man dealing with a completely insane out-of-context situation and trying his best to rein it in to some level of coherence, but unfortunately the writers were hung-over and the deadline was in 10 minutes. I have no idea how a story this bad managed to get published.

Are you sure about that bit? I thought the problem was that she insisted he was lying. The problem wasn't that she was uncertain; it was that she was certain despite the Lasso saying she was wrong.

I thought it was good until the end. Just change that so that instead of Diana's mealy-mouthed 'I was wrong but not really' she's genuine and contrite but Rama Khan doesn't want to hear it and attacks her. The boy tries to stop him, Rama nearly kills him by accident and the land strips him of his power. The boy then runs to his mother and desperately wants to leave, so they do. With no human guidance, the terrain descends into anarchy and everyone has to leave. Diana tries to get Rama to leave as well, but some combination of guilt and hate causes him to decide to stay and die there.
