With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

The classic "king pretends to not be the king so as to get a genuine response from someone who doesn't know he's the king" maneuver.

About the only historical King I have ever heard of doing something like that? Is Gustavus Adolphus the Great A.K.A. "the Lion from the North" who used the alter ego of Captain Gars. Peter the Great of Russia did something similar by traveling to Western Europe where he went undercover as a common laborer to learn what he needed to modernize his nation.

Peter the Great of Russia did something similar by traveling to Western Europe where he went undercover as a common laborer to learn what he needed to modernize his nation.
I don't know how often it actually happened, but its a common story with numerous classic variations, the usual one being the king pretends to be a peasant to wander around find out how his people really live, often discovering that his 'trustworthy advisors' have been lying through their teeth and ripping him off.

'unusual'
'I'm', unless this is a particuarly English turn of phrase.
Thank you, corrected.
This is probably gramatically correct but the repeated 'culture/s' read weird. Maybe the first should be 'socieities'?
I think it's alright.
Who was Sir Daniel? I don't recall him from prior Fallout snippets.
He's one of the potential leaders of Stoon in the Old World Blues game. Between the cannibal, the monster-worshipping cannibal and the insane super mutant nightkin, he's the most mentally coherant choice.
Dueling scars, perhaps. Probably not with the sort of weapon he's carrying now. That's probably far more destructive.
Nope. That power armour isn't for show. Daniel has been in a lot of fights.
While he recovers? Although he could decide to abdicate and pass the throne to her if she rules well enough, I bet.

Hopefully it's just a case of exhaustion. Worst case, he's suffering ghoul-like manias...
That's the irony of the story. He rebelled against Gunn II partially because he was going mad, and then starts to head into violently angry senility himself. Passing the throne onto his daughter allows him to recover somewhat.

That suggests he's someone highly placed in the government. Bespoke tailored gear is not cheap.

The wheat sheafs definitely imply notable things: Plenty, hospitality and secure harvests. I wonder if the book is open or closed...
They suggest that Saskatchewan kept its classic heraldry in some form, but the book just makes me wonder if his house is also associated with the University of Saskatchewan.

Well, at least they know how to be stylish in their armour. Most power armour in Fallout tends towards the purely functional or 'walking tank' in aesthetics, and centuries of decay haven't helped.
The only power armor that's not stylish is the T-51b, and that's mostly because of the bucket looking helmet.

His smiles fades. "Magic?"

"Ah!" I reach into my robes. "I understand your concern, but don't worry. I got a written opinion from the Archbishop of Canterbury…"

What Krono Thinks: Obviously he's concerned with the theological implications of my usage of supernatural powers.

What Daniel Thinks: Wait, does this guy believe in magic? Is he crazy?

I feel my heart sinking as I look at the remains of the thanagarian air base. It does have shield emitters, but it looks like they're designed to stop a volley or two from vehicle-mounted weapons, not a full bombardment. The ground around is melted, stripped of greenery and topsoil and what's left is melted into solid plates… I can even see shimmers where the silica has turned into glass. The outer edge of the force field area is delineated by being less melted; the protection combined with the harder surface of the landing area reducing the damage done.

It's still going to need to be replaced, however. And I wince slightly when I see the wrecks that used to be aircraft. They were tossed hither and thither, hulls slagged and interior melted. And the thanagarians-.

Most of their flesh and bones were incinerated, but here and there Nth metal deposits have survived, marking spines and skulls.

Bleez flits down towards the more fortified buildings. They're more or less in one piece, even if it looks like the exterior has slumped. "There should be a bunker in here, but with all the… Melting, they won't be able to get out."

"Understood. Ring, contact whoever's inside."

"Compliance."

A facility like this is going to have hardened communications devices, but…

I look around at the molten hillside, settling and setting under its heat-shimmer.

There's a limit to what can be achieved. And while they might have a bleed fracture pulse transmitter, that's not something that I can readily access. Instead, I'm reduced to trying to find a form of communication the surviving equipment inside the bunker can detect that isn't also jammed by the thick shielding-.

"Channel available."

"
Orange Lantern Illustres to airbase. Do you require assistance?"

There's a brief delay.

"The bunker access is jammed. How bad is it up there?"

I look around the dismal scene once more. "On the plus side, you'll probably be getting a brand new base out of this."

"Krhk."

"Sending an image now. Want me to break you out?"

"Are we to be your prisoners?"

"Oh, this wasn't me. This was your defence satellites. Not sure what happened, but until I know how targetted that was I'm trying not to take it too personally, so… Not taking prisoners."

"That remark could be taken two ways."

"We're not at war. When we're at war, I assure you, you'll know."

"Then I would appreciate you getting us out."

"Stand by." I generate a crumbler ram construct and bring it down directly on the remains of the building covering the bunker entrance. Then, x-ionised blades cut into the access point, gradually cutting it out.

"The defence station crews destroyed their own weapons." Jade's actually had her exo-mantle project a screen to show the rest of us the results of her data theft. "They're having to use line-of-sight communication from the exterior of the hull."

"The platforms were sabotaged?"

"They're not mentioning being infiltrated, and their system technicians can't find a virus."

"Huh."

The door to the bunker is on the floor, with a long vertical shaft between it and the bunker proper. No wing-room, but I suppose they just drop down and open their wings at the bottom on the way in, and don't mind it taking longer to crawl out. The… Upper part of the entry point is… Hot, and a bit melted, but…

Cold guns.

Nothing that I can't fix.

"Any idea what that leaves?"

"They could have put a robot on the outside, and it manually cut their controls."

"But you don't think that's likely?"

"You've made enemies in their government. It's more likely someone used an official override."

"Hm. I suppose I see where they're coming from. They wouldn't tell the grunts to preserve secrecy, but if the initial attack didn't work… Using more satellites wouldn't add anything."

"Um." Bleez looks extremely awkward. "Are you going to destroy my government?"

I look over to the ruined command centre as the first thanagarian airmen start flying out and getting a look at the devastation. It seems to stun them for a moment, then one of them starts pointing at the wrecks.

"That remains to be seen. Theoretically, how would you feel about being made queen?"

"I'd hate it?"

"Probably not, then. Jade, what's their fleet doing?"

"Looks like it's holding station."

I shake my head. "Thanagar isn't this incompetent."

"You shouldn't assume that everyone in their government approved of this."

"No, I know, but there can't be that many people who can take direct control of their defence platforms.

"Could Hyathis be doing a false flag?"

"It's been decades. I doubt that she's got anyone left who could have gotten into position."

"Yeah, we-" Bleez nods. "-know everyone who went with Hyathis. Everyone in the military gets genetic tests to make sure they're not related."

Jade looks thoughtful. "Do they use civilian contractors for repairs?"

"Not on critical military infrastructure."

She nods. "Is Thanagar in contact with Hyathis's other enemies?"

"I dunno. I mean, probably? I wouldn't get told about stuff like that even if we are, but it makes sense."

"False flag in the other direction?"

"It doesn't seem likely, but it's possible. I'll start checking public records for Dhorian, Mosteelian and Llarrian ships."

"Sensible, but in this case I think we can be a little more assertive. Bleez, this is clearly not what you signed on for. Do you want to come while I remonstrate with the High Mor, or would-."

"Oh frounce no!" She raises her hands, eyes wide. "I'm heading back to the hotel!"

"Most wise. I'll drop you off."

"No! No… I… Need to get this whole-. Thing out of my feathers. Tell me… Tell me how it went when you get back."

And with that she turns and begins flapping back towards Thandalar. Which probably isn't a good idea if someone's gunning for my associates, but… She's her own woman.

"We could do that."

I turn back to Jade. "Hm?"

"If you're serious about the only thing you want from Thanagar being their T.V. archive, we could just leave."

I sigh. "I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying-."

"You want to see it through."

"It's more that I want to make sure that I didn't mess this region up. Ready?"

She closes her screen and nods. Plot route and transition-.

Around us, thanagarians in dark armour reach for their weapons as an alarm sounds.

This isn't the High Mor's office.

That should say 'two'.

Either the thanagarians have found a way to intercept lantern transitions, or someone used magic to do so.

Orbital weapons are rarely accurate enough to be anything less than 'Dear Grid Coordinates: Say Goodbye.' It's still scary to see just how indiscriminate they were even from a glancing hit.

It's still going to need to be replaced, however. And I wince slightly when I see the wrecks that used to be aircraft. They were tossed hither and thither, hulls slagged and interior melted. And the thanagarians-.

Most of their flesh and bones were incinerated, but here and there Nth metal deposits have survived, marking spines and skulls.
...Ouch. So it sounds like the locals had no idea this was about to happen. Anyone who was above ground is dead, and anyone underground...

Bleez flits down towards the more fortified buildings. They're more or less in one piece, even if it looks like the exterior has slumped. "There should be a bunker in here, but with all the… Melting, they won't be able to get out."

"Understood. Ring, contact whoever's inside."
...It could not have been fun riding out that in a hole in the ground, especially for natural fliers.

"Compliance."

A facility like this is going to have hardened communications devices, but…

I look around at the molten hillside, settling and setting under its heat-shimmer.
Dropping that much energy into the area basically turned the atmosphere into a pressure cooker vessel. No way could it displace the air and heat fast enough before it liquefied the topsoil. Resulting in what OL's seeing...

There's a limit to what can be achieved. And while they might have a bleed fracture pulse transmitter, that's not something that I can readily access. Instead, I'm reduced to trying to find a form of communication the surviving equipment inside the bunker can detect that isn't also jammed by the thick shielding-.
...Or cooked by the heat. Most of the surface systems would also have been ruined by the heat flash and plasma.

"Channel available."

"
Orange Lantern Illustres to airbase. Do you require assistance?"
If they're up on their political briefings, that's got to be a concerning name to hear.

There's a brief delay.

"The bunker access is jammed. How bad is it up there?"
...How do you feel about desert daytime temperatures?

I look around the dismal scene once more. "On the plus side, you'll probably be getting a brand new base out of this."

"Krhk."
Safe to say they have no illusions left about what happened to the folks up top.

"Sending an image now. Want me to break you out?"

"Are we to be your prisoners?"

"Oh, this wasn't me. This was your defence satellites. Not sure what happened, but until I know how targetted that was I'm trying not to take it too personally, so… Not taking prisoners."
Now, you say it all nicely, OL, but...

"That remark could be taken two ways."

"We're not at war. When we're at war, I assure you, you'll know."
...Your phrasing really needs some work.

"Then I would appreciate you getting us out."

"Stand by." I generate a crumbler ram construct and bring it down directly on the remains of the building covering the bunker entrance. Then, x-ionised blades cut into the access point, gradually cutting it out.
Nothing subtle, certainly. No need to worry about people trapped in the wreckage, after all.

"The defence station crews destroyed their own weapons." Jade's actually had her exo-mantle project a screen to show the rest of us the results of her data theft. "They're having to use line-of-sight communication from the exterior of the hull."

"The platforms were sabotaged?"
So the systems were subverted from under the crew?

"They're not mentioning being infiltrated, and their system technicians can't find a virus."

"Huh."
That's... Concerning. As if someone reached out and took control remotely?

The door to the bunker is on the floor, with a long vertical shaft between it and the bunker proper. No wing-room, but I suppose they just drop down and open their wings at the bottom on the way in, and don't mind it taking longer to crawl out. The… Upper part of the entry point is… Hot, and a bit melted, but…
There's probably a gravity impeller system that can push them up or slow down their fall. Easier than a mechanical lift, anyway.

Cold guns.

Nothing that I can't fix.

"Any idea what that leaves?"
Magic? Some form of techno-telepathy?

"They could have put a robot on the outside, and it manually cut their controls."

"But you don't think that's likely?"
That'd have been identifiable. This sounds like there's no signs of intrusion.

"You've made enemies in their government. It's more likely someone used an official override."

"Hm. I suppose I see where they're coming from. They wouldn't tell the grunts to preserve secrecy, but if the initial attack didn't work… Using more satellites wouldn't add anything."
Hence the lack of a second third shot. If they couldn't kill him with the first, no point trying again. (I'll admit it, I didn't realise the satellite/s fired more than once...)

"Um." Bleez looks extremely awkward. "Are you going to destroy my government?"

I look over to the ruined command centre as the first thanagarian airmen start flying out and getting a look at the devastation. It seems to stun them for a moment, then one of them starts pointing at the wrecks.
What could be billions of local currency and dozens of lives wasted in a futile sneak attack. Someone's going to be answering for it.

"That remains to be seen. Theoretically, how would you feel about being made queen?"

"I'd hate it?"
Far too much work, for sure.

"Probably not, then. Jade, what's their fleet doing?"

"Looks like it's holding station."
Not looking like an imminent attack, then. An attack of opportunity on OL, then?

I shake my head. "Thanagar isn't this incompetent."

"You shouldn't assume that everyone in their government approved of this."
It's hardly monolithic. Who knows how many subfactions there are obsessed with gaining control.

"No, I know, but there can't be that many people who can take direct control of their defence platforms.

"Could Hyathis be doing a false flag?"
Committing an atrocity like this seems unlikely. Especially when it was an empty hillside and a military base targetted, setting aside OL and company.

"It's been decades. I doubt that she's got anyone left who could have gotten into position."

"Yeah, we-" Bleez nods. "-know everyone who went with Hyathis. Everyone in the military gets genetic tests to make sure they're not related."
But that doesn't preclude non-related converts or the like. Though how there'd be a way to get people to spread the word...

Jade looks thoughtful. "Do they use civilian contractors for repairs?"

"Not on critical military infrastructure."
It would be irresponsible, yes.

She nods. "Is Thanagar in contact with Hyathis's other enemies?"

"I dunno. I mean, probably? I wouldn't get told about stuff like that even if we are, but it makes sense."
Yeah, asking Bleez these things isn't much use. Most intelligence agents aren't exactly informed of operations outside their current case.

"False flag in the other direction?"

"It doesn't seem likely, but it's possible. I'll start checking public records for Dhorian, Mosteelian and Llarrian ships."
Trying to set Thanagar against Hyathis, to the advantage of her foes? not impossible, but the process of how becomes important.

Ah, this has escalated way above her pay grade. Her job was to seduce or otherwise get intel on OL, after all (or so I presume) and this is way off-role.

"Most wise. I'll drop you off."

"No! No… I… Need to get this whole-. Thing out of my feathers. Tell me… Tell me how it went when you get back."
Ah, this is what it took to spook her away from the mission? I guess it is the closest she's come to dying aroudn OL, for sure.

And with that she turns and begins flapping back towards Thandalar. Which probably isn't a good idea if someone's gunning for my associates, but… She's her own woman.

"We could do that."
And if whatever conspiracy is targetting OL specifically goes after her, well, she is an Intelligence agent, and not helpless. I doubt they'd go for a kill rather than a capture. Leverage, you know?

I turn back to Jade. "Hm?"

"If you're serious about the only thing you want from Thanagar being their T.V. archive, we could just leave."
Ah, but someone tried to kill them. OL's not gonna leave that unanswered.

I sigh. "I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying-."

"You want to see it through."
I mean, if he leaves and Thanagar gets effed up, it might get desperate and come after Earth for whatever reason.

"It's more that I want to make sure that I didn't mess this region up. Ready?"

She closes her screen and nods. Plot route and transition-.
Not gonna gear her up for trouble?

Around us, thanagarians in dark armour reach for their weapons as an alarm sounds.

This isn't the High Mor's office.
So, secure VIP bunker or has he been redirected? The former is most likely, but the latter can't be ruled out.

Most likely the High Mor got their tail dragged into lockdown the second the platform went rogue, so this is probably a secure bolthole site to keep them safe. ...Which means that OL just barged into a high-security government facility without invitation. I'd say he's going to have to do some fast talking (or Ring-based disarming) before these Secret Service-alikes start shooting.

why not… hunt down some uncontrollable, nigh-unkillable monsters with useful abilities - specially magic ones, that cover his weaknesses - and assimilate them?
Notably, he actually does consider assimilating strong things, including non-demons, during the Akhlys fight.
Another head gone back to the ring. Perhaps if time allows I should try and hunt down stronger things to assimilate? Not.. intelligent things, but there have to be some demons or feral monsters that no one will miss.
Presumably time did not allow.
…I still wish he'd get a magic-capable minion, but most of those aren't going to be sub-sapient atrocity maximizers, so assimilation's off the table! Plus, he's got Ambrose.
He does have Nabu 666 still, and has used him for magic stuff a couple of times. Problem is that he's too magically-capable, so Oh El worries that he'll break free.
The face beneath is pale-skinned and smiling, with sandy brown hair flecked with grey. The skin has a few small scars on the left cheek, which from what I've seen is common amongst the local nobility. Reminds me a little of the actor who played d'Artagnan in the old Three Musketeer films. He attaches the helmet to a clip on his belt next to what appears to be an arming sword, then brings his clenches right his to his chest in a salute.
'clenched right hand'? Current sentence is quite amusing with the repetition of 'his'.
"Then perhaps we could tell tales of vanquished enemies of the highest quality. For myself, it would be the giant man-eating serpent Leshy, which I slew-" He lays his right hand on the pommel of his sword. "-with this very blade."
Wow, if that event description is accurate it's very impressive that he slew it. Though I assume it wasn't in single combat.
"Well, I'm afraid that I've rather been making it up as I go as well. The cultures that have emerged since the Great War just don't share a formal diplomatic culture. So it depends on you. Based on what I've seen, I would suggest summoning me to the full royal court, whereupon I would introduce myself and pass my letter of credence to an usher, who would pass it to Her Highness, who would read it and ask any questions she felt necessary to confirm its authenticity. Having satisfied herself, she would then have it passed back, and schedule a time for a herself and such of her ministers as she felt were relevant to meet with me."
Extraneous 'a'
Amusing, but Daniel would have encountered the Roach King by now.
'A Lack of Everything' is very amusing to me for some reason.
"Oh frounce no!" She raises her hands, eyes wide. "I'm heading back to the hotel!"
That reads like a pretty nasty disease. Though I imagine in present Thanagar it's just a thing people say, with the disease long since cured or greatly mitigated.

I don't know how often it actually happened, but its a common story with numerous classic variations, the usual one being the king pretends to be a peasant to wander around find out how his people really live, often discovering that his 'trustworthy advisors' have been lying through their teeth and ripping him off.

I doubt many actually did that on purpose due to the risk of getting badly injured or killed (by accident or on purpose) by a peasant or nobleman, after all as Monty Python satirically pointed out? A king is someone who hasn't got shit all over him like a peasant.
More seriously? Most people more than a few centuries ago would hardly be able to tell the local lord if he was out of "costume" never mind the King.

That should say 'two'.
Thank you, corrected.
Hence the lack of a second shot.
Third shot.
It's worth noting we still haven't found out why there was that throwaway comment by Paul about his primary ring, when he removed it for the cage-match sparring with Bleez, being warm...
Oh, no. That was because his ring-based air conditioning suddenly wasn't working and the room was slightly warmer than his skin had been.
'clenched right hand'? Current sentence is quite amusing with the repetition of 'his'.
Extraneous 'a'
Thank you, corrected.

Trying to set Thanagar against Hyathis, to the advantage of her foes? not impossible, but the process of how becomes important.

Seems kind of unnecessary. Last time we saw Hyathis she was shouting that after she polished off her local enemies, Thanagar is next. She's not being coy about her intentions.

Ah, this has escalated way above her pay grade. Her job was to seduce or otherwise get intel on OL, after all (or so I presume) and this is way off-role.

Keep in mind that Bleez is not primarily an intelligence agent. She's not a black widow from the red room or anything. She really is the heir to a planetary throne of one of the old colonies, and she really is an interstellar famous musician. Her acting as an intelligence agent is more about keeping on the good side of her government when they make a, "So as long as you're hanging about OL, could you-" type request.

Frankly I'm not totally convinced all of Bleez's professions of ignorance are true. Once in an unguarded moment she admitted to some pretty high level ambitions, and that her whole musical career is an attempt to build cultural influence and power so that she's better able to get her way when going against official policy. It wouldn't surprise me at all if she has friends in high places and a better idea of what the Thanagarian government is up to than she sometimes claims.
