It's more that she wants to shoot for a couple of the biggest dirt races in Japan, and wants to run against Shirogane in them, but since Shirogane is a year too young for them, she'd settle for running against her in a different setting. Most dirt races do happen to be shorter though.
 
Well, I think this race could be a turning point for Tanya. Her friend,perhaps her best friend,is literally telling her that she wants Tanya to be her final rival; Tanya is a person of great honor, and I'm sure this will awaken a feeling in her that she was missing something needed to truly transcend in racing.

Personally I like to think it's almost purely matter of pride. Umas don't get to run in signature racewear until they've won their debut race, and its meant to be a celebration of their heritage, history and ability, and they wear it only in high stakes races. Also running in a wildly impractical outfit and still winning gives you bragging rights.

"Why are you dressed like that, aren't you taking this seriously?"

"I don't need to take this seriously to beat you. I'm gonna dress like this and still win, then I'm going to gloat about it."

"Oh yeah!? Well I'll dress even more impractically, heck I'll wear a ball gown and beat you!"

Sort of like how Sha'Carri Richardson wore claw nails and fishnet leggings, then placed first in a 200m event and second in another. It made for a good headline and the photos do look ridiculous.

Also if you consider real life thoroughbred horseracing was originally a military tradition for selecting the fastest and strongest horses, it kinda makes sense that the first racers might have run in military fatigues or ceremonial uniforms. With the whole tradition slowly evolving from there.

The entire conversation with Steady Distance is really great, and it also shows that Shiro isn't beating the grey coat stereotypes. She's such a goofball, I genuinely wish we could have seen her and Tamamo Cross have a proper conversation where Tama just has to figure out how to retort to all the absurdities Shiro ends up throwing at her.

Seriously though, the collective realisation from her classmates is great and it results in getting an epithet early. Demon of Distance, is that one in the game? I dont recall.

I also really like that the three classmates with higher wit pick up on Shiro's intentions first, then everyone else gets clued in once Grass says something.

This scene is great and ends on a really great note. Shiro is a little demon and her past life skill of giving rousing battle speeches has carried over, now she just drops cold ass bars at random.

Congratulations to Mori Survival! She was doubted throughout, but she really showed how a healthy fear of death can push an uma to the next level.

Ahh, but how on earth is she going to be able to perform the winning live? Maybe Shirogane's winning live performances won't seem so robotic in comparison to her year mates if she runs them all ragged for each of their wins? How cunning, how cunning indeed.

Also nevermind the winning live, Mori isn't running for the next month and a half, minimum. If she was a playable uma, she might be the second uma to get a purple condition from winning a race.

I'd say that her support card is a Guts card loaded to the max with energy draining events that give stat increases for stamina and a whole bevy of red skills, the whole arsenal of Flustered/Subdued/Hesitant/Frenzied skills for Front Runners. Maybe with Trick (Front), Go with the Flow and Slipstream thrown in for good measure, as a reference to how she likes to hide in another runner's wake then finally maneuver for an overtake in the later race. Probably Highlander and Downhill Speedster for her ability to go up and down hills without losing speed or balance. Her final event chain gold skill would be something like Innate Experience, or if we want it to be more generally useful... Professor of Curvature or In Body and Mind?

Litterally her section of the chapter is that she spent the entire race *SCREAMING INTERNALLY* beacause she didn't have breath to spare to scream externally. We'll have to see if she wants to continue racing, or if this race proves too traumatic.

Oh I know she's going to play fair here; that's pragmatic as well seeing as cheating without being caught would be very difficult and also torpedo her career; that said I don't think not wanting to be caught is the only reason she wouldn't cheat.

I was more contradicting that she's very honorable part; honor never really struck me as a core part of Tanya in any life. She's not particularly dishonorable, but not being dishonorable doesn't make you super honorable.

One can dream. A while back my Youtube was suddenly filled with people doing Urara runs in the game and it almost made me want to install it also. I have quite a soft spot for such characters.
 
A dirt race? I can't recall if we've seen shiro run in one before now. Will be pretty interesting to see if she has the aptitude for it. She'd probably do well i imagine. Which is gonna do wonders for her image "she can run turf AND dirt? Are you kidding me."
But seriously umas that can run both are monsters. Condor pasa, oguri cap, and agnes digital to to name a few. Though their shorter distances won't help her at all.

Also, the statistics would show that races with Shiro in second place would often set new track records. This is also her third or fourth official race with the lead uma being carried away on stretchers? Even a casual audience member would notice something is up.

I'm still hoping for Shirogane to one day recreate the "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere" feat by somehow intimidating the entire lineup into overstraining, crashing, and being unable to finish.

It's still funny how much of a non-starter all these rivalries are. They're all so passionate and Shirogane's just like, their grandma. "That's nice, dearie. Now, make sure you don't hurt yourself playing and wash up before supper."

Indeed, but her signals of respect for her opponents and for racing as an institution make her come off that way to others.
