Ah, this is nice.

Pevensey Castle was over seventeen hundred years old. No reason why it wouldn't have lasted a further two hundred.
Heh, and they say you can't go home again. I suppose some worlds have echoes of Paul's own history, even if the details are slightly different. Now, what did he find there...

Westham is… More or less the same as I remember it, actually. The road is made of some sort of self-repairing… Stuff, and the shop fronts have changed, and the school has been completely renovated at least once since I last went there, but… Given how old the place is, two hundred years isn't really all that long.
Older parts of a country rarely change, especially the further you get from major cities.

The house I grew up in is still there, though the field that used to be behind it is now a housing estate. History… Everything that I've been able to check matches my memories. Which is…
Huh. That's surprising.

I didn't expect to read my own obituary. And technically I didn't, it was the local me. Apparently, I died as something of a recluse. Or so I gather; that me didn't leave anything written anything down beyond a fairly simple Will, and his sister's family didn't feel it necessary to publicise anything.
A true echo of Prime Paul, eh? But a suspiciously silent one.

I'm not surprised, but at the same time I'm a little disappointed.

That's… Something I should work on.
Sometimes just seeing what might have happened can change the shape of a destiny.

But, work.

Kral'nag, are you still talking to me?

Yes.
No hard feelings about treating peacefully with the Vorlon, then.

What little I've been able to find out about the vorlons suggests that they mostly keep themselves to themselves. What did they do to make you hate them?

It is… I am glad that I am no longer a prisoner, but I.. am.. not used to treating with others in this manner.
Good, sometimes breaking out of your comfort zone can bring new wisdom.

And I'm not used to having all of you in my head. Change is an inevitable part of existence.

Yes. That is fundamental wisdom. Tell me: what do you want?
Ah, a dangerous question in this universe. How will the Speaker answer?

Right now? From life?

Both.
Hardly fair to expect long-term goals without sufficient knowledge.

Hm.

You know, I'm not clear how much of my mind you fellows can see.
It'd suck if his thoughts were wide open. Some of them haven't been entirely kindly towards his passengers.

The input of your senses. Beyond that, surface thoughts at best.

I can see a little more. I was a telepath, when I was alive.
Oh-ho? And the ability still functions after death? Or perhaps some measure of emulation by the Soul Hunter matrix that captured his engram?

Welcome back, narn two. If you're a narn telepath, you must have been from quite a long way back.

Quite some way, yes. I spoke up because it appears that my telepathy allows me not just to see into your mind, but into those of my fellow deceased.
Very interesting indeed. Something of a fact-checker, if the Speaker wants to trust him that way.

You dare-?! / That's interesting. / How many fingers am I holding up?

Huh, aliens do that too.
Though in this case, I suspect it's more 'How many am I thinking of holding up?' unless they sort of flaot in a shared simulation of physicality.

I am still waiting to hear what you want.

Alright. Everyone, stop hassling narn 2. You're all dead, and the only living person who will hear your secrets is me. Kral'nag, I thought I was pretty clear.
Heh. Like herding undead cats.

Indulge me.

At this point I don't have a particular objective. I want to gain power, not because I value power in and of itself but because it makes doing things easier. I want to help all of my head guests because I said I would and because in doing so I will learn about this galaxy, and that will make sure that my future decisions are a bit better informed.
Yes, he's a bit short of information right now, even if he's been trawling planetary databases each time he swings by.

Nothing that you want to take for yourself? For your people? You feel no wrath for the minbari's vengeful slaughter of your species?

I wasn't here for the Earth-Minbar War, so I can't really take it too personally. After hearing about the Psi Corps, I'm not sure that my people should be trusted with more power and authority than we already possess. For myself…
Enough power to make others leave him alone, for a start. Guarantees of non-interference, privacy and peace against him...

Hm.

It surprises me how affected I am by the fact that this timeline's me died single. I should probably work on that.

That is it? The sum-total of your ambition is something most members of your species manage easily?
Hey, now. Some folks don't find it that easy, really. And others just aren't interested.

OW. But, for now, yes. I don't know what can be achieved. I have no particular desire for fame or renown. My material needs are already met. I suppose helping put the narn homeworld back together might be a nice place to start, but the internet sites I've read seem to agree that the Narn Regime's industrialisation focus is as much to blame as the Centauri Empire's occupation authority for the ongoing damage. And bailing people out the whole time stops them improving themselves.
Much the same reason he hasn't just swooped in and solved Earth's issues, here or in the DCU.

True. You want nothing?

As I said to the vorlon, I want to be me. The me I am today isn't the same as the me from yesterday, and is even more different from the me of a month ago. I suspect that the me of a year from now will be even more different. Perhaps by then I'll have a concrete goal. Perhaps things will have changed to the point where I think there's a person or faction worth backing. Perhaps there'll be a crisis I want to deal with myself, or some great evil I'll want to stop. That's why I'm increasing my personal power now, while I've got few demands on my time.
And without Enlightenment, he can't be perfectly aware of his desires and interests.

You would benefit from being educated by the Servants of the Black Sun. You have the base of the true ideal, but lack the impetus.

Is.. that.. your religion?"
Oh, I have the feeling he's going to propose something we would call very foolish.

The Servants are enlightened agents and emissaries of our god, and the greatest enemies of the vorlons.

Why?
The Shadows, then. That would be a fascinating variation, though. A Paul not necessarily on the side of the 'angels'. Not that any one faction in Babylon 5 is truly objectively good.

The vorlons demand obedience, unity and weakness from all species. They would remake the universe as a vast crystal prison, with each thing locked in its position forever.

And the Servants of the Black Sun?
By their opposition, they basically take the inverse position, eh?

The Black Sun test us with hardship. It sends enemies to kill us, that we may learn strength and resilience. It destroys our certainties, that we may learn flexibility of mind. It brings enlightenment through pain and suffering. Without the Black Sun's tests, we would still be ignorant and primitive savages on our original homeworld.
And I suppose you're expected to find happiness where you can under such circumstances. The presence of trusted companions, the safety of an unassailable hold, the peace of victory?

So… Darwinism by divine mandate?

Natural selection is obsoleted by comfort culture. Dominant species inevitably destroy the things which threaten them. Large predators are the first to be destroyed. Learn fire, and banish cold. Learn to farm, and banish starvation. Eventually they are left with nothing to stimulate them, and then stagnation and decay set it. The vorlons promote this infantilisation, even altering the genetics of other species to see them as emissaries of a higher power.
...I will say, he's got some good points.

As you see the Servants?

I have no biology. No genetics. If I believed as I believe because they had altered me, that would no longer have any control over me. The drakh believed as we do long before the Black Sun found us worthy of communicating with us through his most exalted servants.
But you are still shaped by your memories, of experiences that you can't just set aside. Indoctrination is a thing, after all.

Hm. Okay. Counterpoints?

If I must.

Go ahead, narn two.
Since no-one else has spoken up...

I lived through a harsh time in my people's history, when telepaths like me were hunted to near-extinction. During my time as a wall ornament of the Soul Hunters, I took the time to learn the history of as many of my neighbours as would speak with me. And in all that time not one of them described a time without strife, without some threat or challenge to overcome. These… Servants of the Black Sun? Yes, I remember when they visited the Homeworld. I remember what we had to do to drive them off. And I remember that we did not benefit from it, no more than our descendants benefited from the centauri occupation.
In other words, it wasn't the deliverance his opponent might call it.

Hm. I'm inclined to agree, but I note that you don't mention the vorlons.

I know nothing of them.

Then I'm going to withhold judgement until I know more. Thank you both for speaking up. Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to reflect on my position alone for a while.
It would be interesting if he formed the core of a third faction. One devoted to allowing each race to find their own path, not walk in the footsteps planted for them by their seniors.

I suppose any differences from modern canon of Babylon 5 can be excused by the age of the passengers. The Narn telepath, for example is apparently over a thousand years dead, wile the drakh fellow may be from an earlier era himself. Never mind the possibility of slight degradation over time of the engrams or souls or whatever they truly are...

Once again: Vir had the only right answer to the Shadows' question...
Ironically that was also the wrong answer, because according to JMS Morden was the one who was already dead that Londo needed to keep alive, and his survival would have completely changed the Centauri's fate since he would have been able to moderate what came after.

Given his position, entirely fair of Paul.

...unfortunately the opportunity to learn more is going to come very soon, as checking the timeline, Icarus is probably waking up the Shadows on Z'ha'dum right now...
Check the date... Its 2257, Icarus already woke the Shadows.

It would be interesting if he formed the core of a third faction. One devoted to allowing each race to find their own path, not walk in the footsteps planted for them by their seniors.
If he tries that while claiming to be a representitive of some unknown group of First Ones the Vorlons and Shadows would wipe the board clean like they did the last time that happened.

The input of your senses. Beyond that, surface thoughts at best.

I can see a little more. I was a telepath, when I was alive.
You know, the Drakh themselves actually have psionic abilities of their own, though they manifest differently than how human or minbari telepaths do. While they are all connected to a type of hive mind called the Drakh Entire, their ability to perceive the thoughts of beings outside said communion is much more limited, surface thoughts at best even when they are tying(and it's possible for a strong enough mind, even one untrained in telepathic blocks, to hide shit from them).

The question here is, is Mr. Drakh here picking up surface thoughts because of his current existence(and thus they all are picking up said thoughts) or is it because he's a Drakh?

They happened, they're just meaningless since nobody is going to charge a 12 year old for non-violent obstruction.

Like, you really dont seem to get that OL has functionally nothing that justifies putting a 12 year old into an adult supermax prison.

So you forgot about the fact that he was experimenting on people without their knowledge or consent, like when he threw that mind altering crystal at Hunter, or the fact that he helped a group of terrorists, which included a guy that's wanted for the crime of mind-controlling people, or the fact that he broke into someone's private property, abducted a sapient entity, and basically mind-raped said entity.

And don't forget about the fact that Lonnie is also skilled with technology to the point where he can create Boom Tubes, and managed to break into a technological fortress like the LexCorp building.

He did all of these things long before he met Know Man, and he also did at least one of these things after he knew that Know Man was a bad influence.

I'll repeat what I said previously: sending him to a regular juvinal prison is just asking for him to either break out or be broken out.

If a Shadow was here to hear this, they might either be pissed off or go cross eyed from confusion. Or not, Morden got an answer from G'Kar in the show, but was disappointed by it. Why, I don't rightly know. Not ambitious enough

Probably.

G'Kar's desire had an end point, so once the Centauri are dead, G'Kar has nothing left to strive for.

Londo's ambitions on the other hand may have no end.

Unusually reasonable conversation.

The Drakh can't exactly do anything else but be reasonable.

If he tries yelling at Paul, then Paul may just ignore him.

You do realize the Shadows saved the Drakh after the Vorlons tried to genocide them for the grand crime of defending themselves?

Yes, and yet they continue destroying and killing billions of innocents because of their insane philosophy.

He is charged with attempting to mind control the entire population of the earth, successfully taking people hostage with mind control, and aiding and abedding his terrorist coconspirators in their continued efforts to destabilize governments world wide. He is being held in the supermax prison because he would escape anywhere less and it is more reasonable than cryofreeze or transfer to a science cell on Oa. You are so wrong that I would think you were just rage baiting or trolling if it wasn't you saying it.

Some more fan art from my part; carry on. I did get to the bit where Doomsday tore down a building in my country and in my city... which was kinda cool? Interacting with predominantly Western media since pretty much forever, sometimes I think I've sort of reversed-colonized myself? Idk where I am going with this. Nice to see Paraguay mentioned. Anyways, I'm churning along with the fic. Slowly catching up.

So have some Paul and his best Snek. I hope there's more Ophidian; she's kinda gone to nap in the central power battery, where I am in the fic at the moment

Ps: If someone could recommend an enduring image host or a tutorial or something? my images keep breaking. On my end, at least; I think for everyone else as well. Please and thank you

To be fair to the G-Oni, most of the damage was done by Nam-Ek.

I use ImgBB.

Something just occurred to me.

In the main story lines and most others where OL's operate in the open, this isn't really an issue but here where he's under the radar I think something subtle might have been missed.

Looking back it isn't huge but it stands out retrospectively to me right now.

When Paragon Paul first met Alan Scott, he wore the ring but nothing stood out, later when Wonder Woman visited he was more actively using the ring. And his eyes were orange, much like how John Stewart's were green in JLU.

It was called out later when he had his first real orange overload and took off the ring that it was when WW found out he had green eyes.

So, are most ring slingers operating with coloured pupils? It doesn't appear to be an issue when he first talks to Alan, unless they were orange then too and the old man didn't consider that odd. As for … 'Speaker' Paul here? He Is operating incognito. Does his eyes not glow? Do they only glow when using the ring actively?

Does he just wear sunglasses all the time?

People can have unusual eye colors, so maybe they don't comment on it because they think it's rude.

And in this universe it wouldn't be that odd for people to assume that Paul's eye are the result of genetic experimentation, cybernetics, or exposure to strange elements.

Or they could just think that he's a humanoid alien.

No, but aliens don't know that humans don't have orange irises, and humans just think he's wearing contact lenses.

Pretty sure Paul will side with Choice. As in give people a choice and show them a different way but don't force it on anyone. It's just bad data feeding bad data.

the shop fronts have changed, and the school has been completely renovated at least once since I last went there, but… Given how old the place is, two hundred years isn't really all that long.

I'm not sure if this is a comment on the stability of the UK through their history (ignoring the occasional royal purge and civil war) or just a Paul being a Paul.

Two-hundred-year periods tend to pack a whole lot of innovation; I mean, any random village/town/city high street in the UK in 1826 may look relatively similar to the same high street today (during the day, electrification would make the actual differences VERY evident, but the population has bloomed. Ignoring Ireland (because who wants to look into that nightmare time), the UK population in 1826 was 14.1 million. Today, the UK population, again ignoring (Northern) Ireland, is around 68 million, or just shy of a 5-fold increase.

I would hope that the school has been renovated 'at least once' over 200 years, with 5 times as many students.

A sort of segue into UK Schools. In the '70s and '80s, I pulled a couple of tours at the Holy Loch in Scotland, where US SSBNs were serviced and stocked before deployment. On my first tour, I met and married a local girl; on my second, most of 10 years later, we had a son, now 8 years old. My wife was thrilled beyond belief that Alex would attend Dunoon Primary, her school.

Me, I figured a school was a school, but if they were both happy...

Anyway, I got home from work around 6 pm (an early day for the Holy Loch) and found my kid all kinds of pissed off, so I asked what was wrong. "He got paddled," my wife explained.

I'd warned him about that; corporal punishment had faded in the US Education system, but was still a thing, at least in Scotland at the time. "What did you do?" I asked.

"I told the Teacher that Los Angeles wasn't the capital of California."

Evidently, because the school had so many U.S.-dependent students, the classes included age-appropriate instruction in U.S. history. I said, "No, tell me what you did."

That was what he had done... well, he didn't just mention it offhandedly; he insisted the teacher was wrong about the state capital.

I made a few calls to my supervisors and had the next morning off. Alex and I were at the school prior to classes, sitting in the Headmistress's office, waiting for Alex's teacher.

This clown was the classic British schoolboy antagonist. "Must we do this every year? Your pampered child disrupted my class."

"This isn't about corporal punishment. I use it myself, but I don't use it to cover my own ignorance. Los Angeles is not the capital of California."

"I assure you, sir, I am a fully qualified Instructor."

"And I'm a fully qualified Electronics Technician. More than that, I'm a citizen of the state of California." I pulled out my wallet and removed my driver's license. "The Capital of California is Sacramento, and has been since 1854."

Alex got an apology in front of his class.

Guess the guy thought the most famous city in that state was the capital.

It can happen.

Lots of people know that Istanbul is one of the most famous cities in Turkey, so they may think that it's the capital, but that's Ankara.
