On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Well, I must watch the anime or read the manga to see how much the canon has been derailed in this story.

TBH, this fic more closely follows real life events than the first season of Umamusume.

At what point can I include historical fiction on the tags, lol. I spent a lot of time researching stuff for it.

People put tags even when the tag in question only happens in a single paragraph out of a 200k story so go ahead.

I would say that it should be Alt history, if you do go for that tag.

It's interesting how on closer inspection, the umamusme universe would fit a biopunk-lite genre. Instead of genetic engineering, the uma worker and warrior castes have selectively bred themselves over several millennia to fill every economic niche involving physical labor/violence imaginable.

There's the Shire and Clydesdale draft horses. These gentle giants were living tractors hauling 40 ton carts and steel plows. Their appetites are monstrous. The horse on the image below weighs 1.5 tons and eats two bales of hay, 10lbs of grain, and drinks 75 gallons of water everyday.

Then, there's the Shetland ponies bred to haul minecarts. Small, stubborn, and stocky, these "pit ponies" spent their entire lives deep underground, only coming to the surface twice a year for veterinary care. On holidays, they were fed beer and whisky. That's right; umamusume verse has literal dwarves!

Have Taro, Azuki, and Macha's draft breed ever been mentioned? Because depending on the breed, Shiro's 150cm eyeline would either be at their lower chest or at their crotch. That's a ridiculous height difference.

I had kinda thought of them as from breeds that would do Ban'ei racing, which from the looks of it does include Percheron.

Which does mean that the three of them deferring to Shirogane as their leader is a bit like the Mr. Big scene in Zootopia.

…Considering the sheer amount of Food Uma must pack away daily, were Uma just put to death and eaten during famines?

Seems like we have differing definition of what a Famine is.
You seem to be thinking of the most extreme of famines where every scrap of food for hundreds of miles around has been consumed, they seem to be talking about a more general famine, just a lack of food surplus.

If there's a lack of food surplus, Umamusume would just move. Big Uma on the other hand… freaking feed them if you want the Fields plowed, planted and harvested for next season.

True famine… Uma that take and monopolise food for themselves will find themselves mobbed by starting people with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Agreed. But i want to point out that in such situation, alternative is death of you and your family. Uma has every incentive to try anyway

Why are you guys even talking about that in this thread anyways?
Probably because since this thread is a more real life take on umamusume, questions about the implications of certain aspects of history and real life on umamusume as a species sometimes come up, even if the questions aren't really thread relevant.

What the rival umas see when Shiro and her OG Crew arrive at the racetrack:
Umazing image

Once again brings to mind the references of Shirogane's as-yet-unknown incredible capacity for violence, and how this too will one day be a surprise for her trainer to have her mind blown about.

Combined with references to her Destrier nature/heritage and the perspective of 'wow that is a fucking fast destrier, holy shit', this makes for even more interesting dynamics.

Draft-Uma tending to be gentle giants and looking to Shiro for leadership, in part due to the sheer aura of a Destrier-Uma and her natural body language/disposition… well Shiro standing in front of an entire mob of Uma 1.5x her height and quadruple her mass, it's a surprisingly believable picture.

The dexterity, power, and resilience of a destrier-uma and Shirogane's veterancy making for an interesting scaling, such as if they measure her total maximum punch force while charging and it's enough to punch a hole straight through an incredible amount of mass, and importantly, to do this without injury to her self from sheer durability. Even from a punch to an uma with the body mass of a draft horse lol, then she does with her relative's heirloom lance and punches through a tank.

She goes to race in america after a boxing glove sponsorship, wherein the ad she punches a hole straight through a solid fucking steel wall, and all the US trainers show their uma in a PSA for not jostling with Shirogane :V

Just think about how absurd it might've looked in umaland history for a charismatic shorty uma to sway an entire horde of massive draft uma, like caesar to his legions, shaming chaotic mutineers for 'abandoning' her and whatnot, tiny tiny little dextrous destrier with great big behemoth soldiers emotionally pleading forgiveness from her
