On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

The sheer gap moe from Shiro's actions against her motivations is going to kill some people if that comes true.

Someone would ask what finally motivated her to give her all, and she answers it's her little sister? That's a deadly weapon.

Assuming most Trainers stay in very good shape, there's a nearby hill, and given a few minutes head start, there's a very good chance a Trainer could escape most of the trainees.
Can't help but see this as being a quote from the Young Male Trainer's Survival Guide~

D.E.A.D. Protocol

Distraction - Distract your uma with something that will occupy them for several minutes
Evasion - Make your uma lose track of you
Altitude - Escape to higher locations
Distance - Run beyond your Uma's distance aptitude

Extremely funny idea for a new evil skill Shiro could give/have: Converse. It's a skill that when it procs causes every Uma within a certain distance have a chance to stumble and reduces their chance to activate skills for several seconds.

Only Shiro can get the upgraded version: Lesson. Which does the same thing but lasts for twice as long while reducing their top speed too.

Just realized that Shirogane could potentially still be running when Admire Groove races, perhaps even competing against her in the QEII Cup. She's an appropriate senpai for another anti-social uma lol.

Was thinking about this a bit. Assuming she does in fact race Admire Groove for her first QEII Cup, that means Shiro races for seven years at least. Which means at minimum she's got as long a career as Stay Gold, with a majority of their careers overlapping. Then she also precedes and outlasts the best of both the 1999 and 2001 generations, which is a bit crazy to think about. So assuming the story gets to that point, Shiro will eventually meet with TM Opera O, Doto, Digitan and the JAMB quartet. Think about all the hijinks she could get up to, or at least the hijinks that would be happening to her.

She's more or less the perfect villainous foil to Opera, and better yet she's not against playacting as a Big Bad Evil Guy at all, in fact she might be a little too good at it. I reckon I've mentioned it before, but the interactions with Cafe and her friend would be cool to explore. And if she draws Cafe's attention then Tachyon shouldn't be far behind, and in that same vein, neither should Digital. As for Pokke, well there's always the mutual connection through Fuji. By that point, around her fifth year, it's not hard for me to imagine Shiro helping with Fuji's in her role as the one who makes sure overeager underclassmen aren't going overboard with their training. Perhaps one who looks students who don't live in the dorms like her.

Also please imagine: Shiro and Cafe exchanging coffee beans, Cafe noticing that her friend acts strangely around Shiro and Tachyon coming into contact with Shiro by proxy and bearing witness to her limitless stamina firsthand.

Also also: longsuffering Shirogane taking care of her kouhai, making sure that Admire Groove doesn't overwork herself, that Still in Love doesn't lose herself to mental corruption and perhaps making sure that Neo Universe stays in this universe.

Also also also: Shiro getting conscripted as Mirako's training partner, the only one who can get her into the pool with any regularity.

It's really quite sad that Shiro won't get to race Mejiro Bright at her absolute peak. Her "take it slow and easy" aura is the polar opposite of Shiro's stress aura and they're both specialist for really long distances.

Uma!Meiner Barbizon being such a Shiro fan girl that she makes it her life goal to surpass her in sheer number of races run, manages 283 races over a 14(?) year career. (Meiner Barbizon is a genmate of Goldship and Gentildonna who retired like, two days ago at the time of posting. Sired by Agnes Digital)

Who says she can't? Both are Golden Gen. And plus, imagine if Shiro's killer aura brings bright OUT of her take it easy mode and we get Killer Pony Vs Fade Demon (IRL Bright was known to pick fights with other horses (including Dober) and had to be physically kept separate from Tamamo Cross as the two could and WOULD fight each other if given the chance.)

Mejiro Bright isn't Golden Gen, she's the year before. Her absolute peak is basically right now, where she's just crushing the '98 winter and spring longs. She'll still be notable in the fall and in spring of '99, but she doesn't try to defend her win at the Stayers Stakes, which is probably going to be Shiro's career highlight.

Ah, my mistake then, but Bright deciding to go for a Stayers Stakes double due to overhearing Dober talking about her Junior is plausible.

More than likely not, it's just not her as an Uma.

She doesn't care about rivalries and by that time has already satisfied her goal of upholding the honor of the Mejiro name. Her true end even has her falling off and being beaten by younger generations, but not caring because the wins she already got for her family will be theirs forever.

How long should Shiro's career last?

It would be fitting though if she places second in her last race.

Seeking the Pearl hopped up to her feet again, doing another spin for no adequately expressed reason, pulling her sunglasses down to cover her eyes. "See, I've been to a bunch of different places, so you could say I'm Miss Worldwide, capiche?" She pointed at Shirogane with both index fingers, hands curled to resemble guns, which made Shirogane twitch before she tamped down the urge to bash someone's face in.

Been doing some rereading and it is disturbing how so many of Shiro's nonfamily social interactions results in activating her killing instincts.

It's as if Shirogane OS is constantly spamming [Do you want to KILL ? Y/N] quicktime prompts every time her fellow umas do anything at all! If this is normal for war umas, it's no wonder why they're almost extinct! People with instincts like that usually end up dead or imprisoned in a modern society. In fact, this raises some rather disturbing implications for the nature of premodern umamusume.

The modern racing breed umamusume with their human-friendly temperaments and nice dispositions are a rather recent phenomenon. Before their rise to prominence in the 16th century, there were two distinct races of umas; the working umas and the war umas. From ancient times, the human and the uma peoples lived together in a state of symbiosis; the hard-working and docile worker umas labored the fields, mines, and construction sites while the war umas fought wars.

The war umas loved to fight and they were very good at it. As a mono-gendered female race, they competed with human women for human mates and they were good at that too. Like the demons from Frieren, they selectively bred themselves into great natural beauties and were absolutely superior in physical properties to human women. So what happens to the human society when war umas outcompete and replace the human women?

Well. History shows that very bad things happen to their neighbors. Just look at the Hittites, Mongols, the Macedonians, the Comanche Indians, the Spanish Conquistadors, etc. The society with a critical level of war umas seemingly turns into an expansionist, hyper-aggressive, empire that conquers and genocides all those around them. That is a feature, not a bug, of war uma empires because the ancient war uma were just prettier Warhammer orks who lived to fight, plunder, and make more of themselves. Thus for many millennia of human and uma history, the world was in a state of perpetual tribal conflict between umas.

But things started changing in the 15th century. Guns were introduced that allowed even a weak human to stop the strongest rampaging umamusume. For a time, the umas adapted by speccing into armor as heavy cavalry but their days as unstoppable juggernauts of war was drawing to a close. Like the Takeda clan at the Battle of Nagashino, the war umas literally genocided themselves against walls of guns and artillery with each successive conflict.

As the hyper-aggressive war umas fought and died, the more docile and gregarious ones survived. Instead of slaughtering and plundering, the peaceful new umas engaged in more societally acceptable sports like racing. Thus, the racing umas were born! Throughout the centuries, the new racing umas along with their workhorse cousins eventually supplemented the bloodthirsty war umas, the last of whom faded away after the Second World War.

That would mean that Shirogane is a sort of genetic throwback to the ancient umas; a velociraptor in the age of ostriches, chickens, and turkeys. So it's no wonder why she invokes that instinctive feeling of unease amongst humans and modern umas. They are in the presence of an apex predator that as hunted them for thousands of years...

That idea seems really cool, especially considering that wild horses are known to be territorial and fight among themselves during times of scarcity; they even force abortions in females when they want to mate with them, just to make them available again.

Therefore, a warrior Una musime with a hybrid horse/human mindset could easily view her men as her property and become ruthless—even hyper-aggressive—toward rival females.

That said, it is worth remembering that horses are animals that prefer to flee rather than fight, unless they believe they have no other choice.

To be fair, Shirogane is unusually unique that you can't actually use her as a measuring stick to the average Uma Musume, much less her fellow racers. It's also like saying that the modern descendent of Spartans still have their warrior instinct and are therefore more likely to commit crimes and stay in prisons.

Also, military Uma is a thing here so they have somewhere to go if they do exist, and warhorse requires a lot of training to actually make them useful in the battlefield anyway. So, without the training, law enforcement should be able to deal with them easily enough. Especially when police horse is a thing, so they should also have their own police Uma available as backup/support.

I think you are missing the cavalry/dragoon uma between the dedicated heavy charger Uma and the more modern racing Uma. The cavalry umas temperament would be less aggressive Charing and more scouting/raiding preferring hit and run than hammer and anvil. These umas would be more used to loud noises due to training with gunfire. An off shoot from these girls would be the American cowgirl Umas who would spend time in the west running cattle.

There were likely many different variants of war umas in the premodern era. Different tribes, if you will, each specializing in different aspects of warfare. You get the small, high endurance types as light cav for scouting, skirmishing, and raiding. Then there's the big, strong heavy cavs for the frontline combat.

You can guess at the modern racing uma's warrior ancestry by looking at her body morphology. Even though their minds no longer have the killer instinct, their bodies remember.

Just look at Goldship. Strap on some armour and give her a claymore and she'd fit right in on some ancient battlefield. Her whimsy would be absolutely terrifying to both friends and enemies.

Edited addition: The Cowboys vs Indians conflict in the American Great Plains was likely fought almost entirely by umamusume. The Cherrokee and Comaches had kidnapped or assimilated runaway umas into their society and became a premier light cav force, raiding trains and settlements for more umas and loot. American umas, led by General Custer-esque proto trainers eventually defeated them and banished them into reservations where their descendants live to this day.

The reservations contains the highest per capita instance of umamusume in North America. However, there is limited economic prospects and many uma suffer from obesity and alcoholism.

Man, the Spanish abandoning some Uma in the new world had crazier consequences and worse implications.

There's a wonderful phrase that sums up your hypothesis: "God created all men, but Samuel Colt made them equal."

Since we live in a highly civilized society today, where our biggest concern is paying bills and rent, we're unable to grasp how brutal the past was.

There was a time when having a warrior social class was a very valuable investment. Weapons like spears, swords, or even bows don't turn you into a Terminator overnight; you need months, or even years, of practice to use them practically, let alone for military purposes. A knight, even without armor, was worth far more than dozens of villagers armed with sickles.

Applying your example to the world of Umamusume, just as the invention of the machine gun marked the end of mounted cavalry as a military unit, the increasingly widespread use of firearms marked the end of the Umas' absolute military dominance. Now, even the weakest human armed with a pistol is a lethal threat to even the strongest Uma.

As you pointed out, World War I and World War II were probably the biggest slaughterhouses for War Umas in history.

Although I'm not sure if that was your intention, I also think your hypothesis would explain why modern Umas have so many health problems.

Modern thoroughbreds have so many health problems due to inbreeding (literally descending from only three Arabian horses), genetic selection for speed at the expense of bone and muscle density, and the crossbreeding of champion bloodlines that have many innate health problems.

Similarly, though perhaps not as extreme, because human physiology is much more robust than equine physiology, the Running Umas suffer from numerous health problems. This is because the vast majority of their ancestors, the "War Umas," became extinct during World War II, with only the most gregarious, peaceful, and likely physically weakest individuals surviving. As a result, their species' gene pool is extremely reduced.

Here's a link to an Umamusume fanfic called "Wine Red," which includes a chapter set in an alternate universe depicting a matriarchal, warrior society dominated by Umamusume: https://www.webnovel.com/es/book/um...ror's-princess_92809874748009017?from=comment

PS: It's not pretty, as you pointed out, the only difference between the Orks of WH and the Empires of War Umas, is that the latter are much prettier and do not reproduce by spores, much to the dismay of the poor men they capture.

Mandatory Vacation Time

Shirogane sighed as she watched the microwave popcorn slowly rotate with a buzzing hum. After several months of intense training, racing, and studying, her trainer had insisted on Shirogane taking a rest day. No studying. No "light" jogging. No errands. Nothing but nothing.

Toujou-san insisted the break was necessary to avoid burn out and Shirogane had to reluctantly agree. She briefly considered studying anyways but she was already four weeks ahead in her classwork and she did promise to not do any work today.

So now she stalked the kitchenette in a poofy bathrobe, waiting for her popcorn to finish. The microwave dinged and Shirogane dumped the fifth serving of popcorn into her umamusume-sized serving bowl. That should be enough. For now.

She flopped down onto the couch and flipped on her comically oversized plasma screen television. It took up half the available wall space of her apartment. Shirogane would never consider buying such a ridiculous piece of entertainment equipment, but it was a secondary prize from one of her recent races. The white elephant prize was not worth the effort of sending back home so now it sat in her tiny livingroom, unused except for weather updates.

With another sigh, Shirogane channel surfed her way through daytime television hell. She hoped for a war documentary or a nature show but that hope was quickly dashed. Channel after channel of stale teledramas, talking heads, and game shows greeted her. The pale mare watched umamusume contestants in silly costumes stumble across a green slime field with carrots in their mouths. One of them fell into the goop as the studio audience laughed and womp-womp sound effects played. Didn't these umas have any sense of pride? She wondered, anger rising, and changed the channel again.

Ah, BBC News. At least now she'd have a chance to practice English comprehension. She set the remote aside and ate a handful of popcorn.

"The standoff between the Mustangs United Freedom Front and the Child Protective Services has reached its second week today." The announcer said grimly. The view from a news helicopter showed a narrow, desert road blocked off by several umas in loincloths. They were arguing with a convoy of government officials in white vans.

Mustangs? Shirogane wondered. They are… American wild horses, right? Why was the Child Protective Services getting involved? She felt like she was missing some context here. She took another mouthful of popcorn.

The scene switched to a stereotypical American farmer. "Those MUFFs are a menace!" he said. "They have no concept of private property. Every day, I come across my fields and storage stripped empty. I love freedom but what they're doing ain't freedom, it's a robbery!"

"So I went to their desert hovels to complain and that's when I saw all those hungry-lookin' fillies. I don't care what the adults do but I care about the poor children. That's why I called the CPS. This is not about my crops anymore. It's all about the children."

Shirogane scoffed. That farmer didn't look like he had a single caring bone in his whole, fat body. She took another mouthful of popcorn.

The news narrator explained the Mustangs United Freedom Front group's origins. Apparently, there were a sort of uma naturist-luddite commune living in the Nevada desert. Founded in the 1960s by some hippies, a small community of umas had lived in the desert, doing… something?

The scene changed to a tearful uma woman and her husband. "Those Mustangs took my baby!" she cried, holding a portrait of a young uma in a graduation cap and gown.

Ominous music played as the narrator explained. "Young Karen Jones was an honours student on a track scholarship to Arizona State University. She was an All-American girl who loved pizza and sports. Karen wanted to be a physical therapist when she grew up. But one day, everything changed!"

A scare cord played.

"She met several, very friendly umamusume at a house party and became very close friends. But they were secretly recruiters for the Mustangs United Freedom Front!"

The uma mother dabbed at her eyes. "She became very different after that. She was so sweet but then she started to argue with her teachers and me. She changed her clothes and started wearing face paint! She… she called me an American imperialist w-whore and ran away!"

Shirogane snorted and took another mouthful of popcorn.

The news showed footage of Karen, now dressed in loincloth and face paint, throwing rocks at a patrol car. "Those Mustangs are a cult!" Her father said angrily. "My daughter would never do that willingly!"

The narrator continued. "After the incident with the police, young Karen disappeared for three months. But then, the Mustangs group revealed a shocking video announcing her marriage!"

It was a cave backlit by work lights. Several umas in black ski masks and loincloths stood in the background, holding rifles. At the forefront was Karen, beaming happily in a wedding veil and nuzzling a muscular young man.

The man gave a twitchy grin. "Hello! My name is Michael 'Happy' McDunn, and I am a 21-year-old college student. I am currently living a new, happy life with Mustangs United Freedom Front. I am not being held against my will, and I am being well-treated. The wonderful Mustangs feed me three great meals every day. I love my new wife, Karen! She is the joy of my life!~" His eyes rapidly blinked a series of SOS.

The narrator continued. "Despite the assurances of consent, newly discovered footage shows a different story for Mr. McDunn, who had gone missing several weeks prior."

A gas station security footage showed McDunn idly pumping gas into his truck. Karen stealthily approached him from behind. Within seconds, the uma maniac threw him into a large burlap sack. She then tossed the struggling sack onto her shoulder and fled the scene.

"Please, baby!" The uma mother cried. "Please come home!"

Shirogane snorted again. "Idiots." She tried to scoop another mouthful of popcorn, but the bowl was empty. Grumbling, she changed the channel to sports before making more popcorn.

Why do you guys every time you find a cute girl anime/game must everything in your power to turn it into a WH40K knock off or whatever this is :

It's based on real events. Mustangs are herds of feral horses in the American West.

Ranchers have been complaining about them grazing on pastures that belongs to them and spreading diseases to their horses and cattle. The American government has done periodic culling of the herds in the name of preventing overpopulation but the practice has been controversial. Helicopters are used to herd the wild mustangs into pens for adoption but due to lack of interest and difficulty of training feral horses, most are simply slaughtered and dumped into large pits.

Edited addition: Also, the Waco Cult Siege by the ATF happened around this time in the story so I combined the two events together.

Helicopters are used to herd the wild mustangs into pens for adoption but due to lack of interest and difficulty of training feral horses, most are simply slaughtered and dumped into large pits.
They are an invasive species. Horses are just so romanticized in pop culture thay most people forget they are animals, not mythical creatures.
