    Its some new shit on their end, but basically it's the same reason you have to register here to see NSFW stuff and the same reason you have to click on "I am 18" on a bunch of websites in order to view THEIR NSFW stuff.

    It covers the asses of the websites from getting in legal trouble because they're accidentally showing NSFW content to their child users.

    If a minor lies and claims to be over 18, that's not the website's fault. But if the website doesn't even try to restrict access or make a modicum of effort to "check" that they're over 18, it can be blamed on them.

    Though, looking at the link you provided, it seems more like Tumblr is fucking up in the same way Youtube has been for a while now, rather than simply hiding only NSFW content to cover their asses. If they're actually blocking LGBT content with this new Safe Mode, they're definitely doing it wrong lol.
