I...huh...what? What kind of ancient society are you talking about? Harems have only existed in specific, very peculiar society in the last 5 thousands years as far as i know, and in those societies Harems were for showing off your money.
I guess i don't know much about ancient china, but apart from that...what are you talking about?
In the last 5 thousands years Harems = childish has ben pretty consistant.
I may not be voting, but I just had to chime in here.
I've lived in West Africa and yes, more wives/women/mistresses for the rich and powerful still is a societal fact there.
I have a friend who has 30-some siblings because her mother has three co-wives; her father is a high ranking judge.
Go back four generations and pretty much everyone has a polygamous household in their family tree.
Group sex and such may not be part of the social custom of many societies, but polygamy is.

Even in the West it's traditional.
Shoot, look at the Bible; Solomon is reputed to have had 700 wives and 300 concubines.
His father married his mother after arranging her first husband's death, making her his eight wife.
Popes had mistresses, and children by them; the Borgias are a famous example.

Francois Hollande of France just got caught by the media slipping out of the French presidential palace on a scooter to fuck his actress mistress, and the only thing that makes it special is that this is the first time French media has reported on a president's mistresses.
Or do I have to mention JFK for the US? Or, going back further, Thomas Jefferson? Brigham Young?
The Mormon church only officially outlawed polygamy in 1890, under pressure from the govt, and it had splinter groups
Islam allows four wives.
I could go on.

Make no mistake, it's not a state to be pursued, but de-facto polygamy is a fact of human history, and still practiced in large parts of the world today.
Even if it's nothing like you see in media.

Far be it from me to usually criticise a GM on his worldbuilding, but this can't possibly be accurate.

My understanding is that the former sugar daddy settles what amounts to a dowry on his ex-mistress, plus or minus an allowance, setting them up status-wise.
Given that marriages were often as much economic affairs as romantic ones, that makes said lady an attractive catch, especially given that they're usually pretty good looking.
Think widow of status, not girl.

Of course, this does rely on said sugar daddy having some sense of responsibility, and the resources to do so.
Else, said mistress gets retired when she falls out of favor, and has to rely on whatever she saved while the going was good.

Well, yes, that's what I was referring to. If you just sent one of the girls back to the village with nothing to show for the tryst she'd be in big trouble, since young brides are supposed to be virgins. So it's customary to either give an ex-mistress enough money (or other property) to make a good dowry, or to support her yourself. But you have a good point that the 'send one of them away' options should probably just be lump-sum amounts instead of an ongoing cost - you wouldn't normally keep sending money unless the ex-mistress was raising your kids, or was a real favorite of yours.

At any rate, I'm going to hold off on updating until tomorrow morning in case someone else decides to vote. Tomorrow you should get both the initial results of whichever plan is chosen, and the actual turn results.

[X] Surely a feudal lord can handle a pair of peasant girls? Give them both a good spanking, lay down some ground rules, and make them behave.

All right, this is going to be fun.

We started this and now we have to deal with it.

This looks pretty interesting.

[X] Surely a feudal lord can handle a pair of peasant girls? Give them both a good spanking, lay down some ground rules, and make them behave.
-[X Use the same method that secured our staff in the first place, carrot and stick, punish them when they are bad and reward them when they are good.

Edit: Good point, fitzgerald. Added.

Can I suggest modifying your votes to the following

[] Surely a feudal lord can handle a pair of peasant girls? Give them both a good spanking, lay down some ground rules, and make them behave.
-[] Use the same method that secured our staff in the first place, carrot and stick, punish them when they are bad and reward them when they are good.

I Must Have Them Both! Pt 2

Route chosen:

[X] Surely a feudal lord can handle a pair of peasant girls? Give them both a good spanking, lay down some ground rules, and make them behave.
-[X] Use the same method that secured our staff in the first place, carrot and stick, punish them when they are bad and reward them when they are good.

-----

You give each of them a spanking and a stern lecture on proper behavior. They cry, apologize tearfully and promise to do better. You make them apologize to each other too, and promise to be nice to each other. For the rest of the month you keep an eye on their behavior, carefully dispensing punishments for minor infractions and handing out little rewards when they do well.

They shape up so quickly you'd almost think they were testing you on purpose. By the end of the month things seem to be going well - the girls are flirty and affectionate with you, they seem to be friends again, and when one of them starts flirting with you in the other's presence she just joins in instead of getting jealous. Life is good.

Dita teases you a bit about your 'adoring minions', which is a breach of propriety but about what you're coming to expect from the irrepressible tomboy. But there's something a little odd about her tone of voice when the topic comes up. Is she... jealous?

Result: Crisis Averted (For Now)
Dominic is acquiring a reputation for being good at handling women.

Update - March 1, Year 1

Project Results

Dominic - Training
Your efforts to develop a speed enhancement technique prove much trickier than expected. While you can now speed up your body in short bursts the technique doesn't affect your mind, so you have a tendency to trip over obstacles and expose yourself to counterattacks. This could still be a useful combat technique under the right circumstances, but you'll have to be very careful how you use it.

Of greater import, you finish improving your flesh sorcery to level 2. You now have enough magical stamina to use all of your current techniques repeatedly in the course of a training session, and you feel that you could manage significantly bigger and/or more complicated effects as well.

Bialas - Train Archers (Discipline)
No problems to report.

Dita - Training
Thanks to your encouragement Dita takes this rare opportunity to work on improving her magic this month instead of doing physical training. She throws herself into this project with a surprising level of dedication, and by the end of the month she's developed a new technique that lets her produce a blinding flash of light to distract and disable enemies. She also starts working on increasing her light sorcery to level 2 (1/4 progress) - which reveals that she's the only NPC Dominic has ever met who can actually do two projects per month.

Jaroslaw - Train Rangers (Skill)
No problems to report.

Traian - Road Repair Plan
Unfortunately Traian's efforts to plan out a road repair project runs afoul of a general lack of information. He's going to have to be able to walk around the territory measuring distances and making lists of trouble spots before he can make any kind of estimate, and even then the fact that he isn't an engineer means he won't be especially accurate.

Staff
Your staff completes their projects for the month, resulting in a notable improvement of the quality of your daily meals. With their time no longer completely occupied with projects they also have time to keep up with all the little tasks involved in properly maintaining the keep.

Your head maid is asking for permission to hire another maid, since two of her staff are now spending a good bit of their time on other duties.

Other Events
You receive a reply from Baron Kiscun, offering to send his heir to walk the borders with you in April. Apparently the baron is not in the best of health, and has begun delegating such duties.

You receive a reply from Nikolai observing that Pavel isn't expected to return to Pischia this year, which makes walking the border a bit problematic. He offers to arrange to do it himself in May, but you know that it needs to be the actual ruler or his heir for the regency magic to be fully effective. Maybe you should talk to Chesna directly?

At this point you've successfully befriended Dita, and can ask her for information or have RP conversations with her whenever you want. She has apparently been living in Castle Pisch with Pavel's family since the trial, and sem fairly knowledgeable about local leaders and recent politics.

The weather is beginning to warm up now, and the spring thaw will arrive soon. That means you can plan on sending people out on projects that involve travel in the coming turn, and any adventures you choose to undertake will be significantly easier. But you have a long list of problems and very limited manpower, so what will you deal with first?

GM Questions

1)The cumulative buffs to body ( Str, End, Dex) in game terms would they make us Body 4 ,5, or 6 ?

2) Would visiting Tamasai with Dita to do a discrete check on the Witch to see if she's got magic be a Minor or Major Action

3) Does Paval have a heir beyond his daughter?

We should probaby do adventures in this order

First recruit the sorceress
Then solve our Haunt and Witch problems

More magic might be very usefl against the Haunts and the sorceress supposedly had an encounter with the alleged witch.

For the other problems of our fief I would recomend we do them in this order

Kill beastmen before they breed
Deal with the bandits
Deal with the pirates

The poachers are less important but we can deal with them first if we are not yet prepared to deal with the more dangerous problems.

Seems we only have the resources to clear the grounds and maybe lay in siege stores - but the granary is higher priority right now... So maybe we should hire an engineer.

Dominic
[X] Proclaim Lordship to the populace, meet Sir Ditrik while doing so. While making the rounds make it clear to the populace that as a generous lord you are not overly concerned with issues that arose before you were lord, but now that you are the law is the law and will be enforced. However since we understand the burdens of the short notice tax incoming for some households if they cannot pay the tax on April 15th they can choose to take three different options this one year only.
A. Accept a deferment and pay in cash at a later date with minor interest attached.
B. Pay off the tax with extra labor days valued slightly above one SP in worth.
C. Pay a larger portion of their harvest tax valued moderately above one Sp in worth
They can also elect to choose a mix of these three of these strategies.
[X] Research Birth control, having one of the mistresses get pregnant would be a hassle
[X]Visit Atalya Bartok in Tamasi to talk to her about the foreign sorceress, then attempt to track down the sorceress, possibly to recruit if she isn't crazy or evil

Sir Bialis
[X]Recruit archers
hopefully our proclamation as well as the previous archers recruited can make the rest of the poachers realize which way the wind is blowing and take the offer

Jaroslaw
[X]Train Rangers
I'm iffy on this but we want at least some decent troops when we start handling things

Dita
[X]Train Light magic
[X]Accompany Dominic to try to find the sorceress

Traian
[X]Count up the households, if possible get a rough idea of what percentages will be able to pay in cash and on time, this can hopefully be done while traveling with Dominic for more safety

Men at arms
[X] Guard Dominic

Archers
[X]Garrison

Rangers
[X]Be trained

Minor Actions
[X] Give head maid permission to hire another maid.

[X] Write Father inquiring if the family has or knows of skilled Engineers that aren't tied up with vital works

Refer back to the first post where Dominic is talking with his father, We have to Proclaim Lordship first before walking borders

I'm not going to be giving exact numbers for that kind of thing, because Dominic isn't in a position to work out the precise game mechanics. But the buffs are pretty substantial, and would probably allow you to defeat an opponent who would otherwise be significantly better than you.

That would be a minor action, since Tamasi is nearby and you probably go there now and then anyway.

No, he doesn't. He has two daughters, with Chesna being the older one at 16. Needless to say this is cause for some concern among the family, since it means whoever she marries will end up being the next baron of Pischia unless Pavel manages to produce a son before then.

Yes, your family has a distinct shortage of male heirs at the moment. But doing anything with that could require a bit of tricky maneuvering. The inheritance laws in Borjeria don't allow the family to just pass titles around at will unless everyone involved agrees, which is never going to happen.

Pischia is Pavel's hereditary fief, so it has to pass to one of his children. Normally that would be his eldest son, or since he has no sons he could potentially designate Chesna instead. Failing that the barony passes to whoever Chesna marries.

Dita was due to inherit Verzi, her father's barony, but you're not sure what the legal status of the place is now. Dark sorcery is one of the very few charges that can be used to legally disinherit an heir, but you're pretty sure Verzi was originally her mother's inheritance rather than being a Petran fief. So normally it should have reverted to Dita's nearest relative on her mother's side in that case, which you know hasn't happened. You're not sure what kind of legal maneuvering has been going on there, but there's a good chance your grandfather is just serving as Dita's regent at the moment and will eventually have to hand the barony over to her husband.

Since I know someone is bound to ask, marrying a cousin isn't common in Borjeria but it is legal - it's the sort of thing families like yours are sometimes forced to resort to in order to retain possession of their holdings, but it's close enough that a lot of people aren't entirely comfortable with the idea. So in theory you could probably claim a barony by marrying either Chesna or Dita, and that does solve a problem for your family, but no one is going to be thrilled about it as a solution.

Seventeen said:

This can be done as a minor action. You could easily do this and then go try to find the sorceress as a single action if that's your goal.

Traian is severely lacking in people skills. He isn't going to be very good at this kind of task.

[X] Ask Dita why Nikolai would offer when Chesna, as Pavel's heir, should be obliged to perform the duty.

Dita rolls her eyes. "Because Chesna is completely boy-crazy right now, and Lala doesn't trust her out of her sight. Which is stupid, because Chesna knows better than to do anything that would wreck her chances of a good marriage, but parents are like that. Especially Lala, that woman is dumb as a stump and thinks everyone else is too."

"Nikolai's been trying to act like it's his barony for a couple of years now anyway, so he probably figures this is a good chance to reinforce the image. Slimy creep."

One thing I think needs to definitely be done is to check out that knight that's living in our fief, Traian should count up all the houses so we can get more tax money (we're starting to empty our current reserve pretty fast and we have lot's of big ticket items coming up).

Other than that I'll ask ShaperV again if more troops can be added to our current units without degrading their skill, cause otherwise I'm not sure about sinking more time into training our current units.

Also remember we need to take care of all the haunts before claiming lordship. Though the beastman breeding sounds like the most urgent task to take of.

Training Dita in tactics is not a very high priority at the moment. We already have an abundance of characters with both leadership and tactics. Also it is very uncertain if we can do much long term work this year so hiring an enginer now is not a high priority either. What is most important this year is removing the many problems of our fief and doing that regency magic thing.

Fire magic might be very valuable for clearing the Haunts but we can wait to decide that after we have attempted to recruit the sorceress. For now it is better to take advantage of our new level in flesh magic and upgrade our buffs (which is something we would want to do anyway).

A couple more questions for ShaperV

I had gotten the impression that once we leveled up our flesh magic all the applications we know also improved, not that we would have to retrain them to the current standard, is this correct?

Also is it possible to combine the Proclaiming our lordship to the commoners project and meeting the Unexpected Knight project into one action?

Finally, taxes are collected on April 15, so if next turn we set Traian to trying to crack the River Tarrifs problem how would that work? Would he just be halfway through and we'd have to accept the current tax scheme or is it possible for him to have either gotten a grasp on the problem by then or at least gotten far enough along that a problem is clearly evident so we could have cause to delay things until it's resolved?

Also just in general if we're going to work on any magic applications this turn I think it should definitely be healing, that was one of the main reasons to get lvl 2 and now that we're going to be heading out into the field to solve problems it'll probably be quite useful indeed, even if it obviously won't be a cure-all.

Edit: Hmm... also we were sent here partially to try to get some support from the neighboring baronies, so even though that's looking quite a bit harder what with the incidents we've learned about we should probably ask Dita about the issue as she likely has some more in-depth knowledge about the area. She might also have some insight about possible bridal candidates but that seems a bit more of a touchy subject.

Increasing your sorcery level automatically lets you use your abilities more often, run maintainable abilities for a longer period of time, affect a bigger area with AoE abilities, and generally enjoy any other obvious benefits of having more power to throw around. But if you want to do something you couldn't do at all before (like turn your burst of strength ability into something maintainable) you'll still have to research that.

Thomasfoolery said:

Yes, you'll have to visit the knight's hamlet anyway to do the claiming so you can talk to him then.

It's the household tax that's due on April 15th, not the river tarrifs. From what you can tell the river tarrif doesn't have a due date - what happens is after the river thaws every boatman who wants to work this year has to go to Eztergrom to buy a license. Most of them will do that at some point in April, so around mid-May the harbormaster's office totals up the receipts and then sends you your cut.

So if you send Traian to Eztergrom for the month of April he can investigate their procedures, monitor the paperwork and find out whether they're cheating you, assuming the locals cooperate. But if they're being dishonest they'll probably refuse to let him see the books, and you might have to show up in person to deal with that.

That might be a good idea.

Since you decided to keep both mistresses some kind of birth control magic might also be a good idea...

Dita:
"Support for the Petrans? In this area? That could take some doing, but you might be able to make something out of this thing that's going on between Rogatica and Kiscun."

"Baron Janek is the current ruler of Rogatica, and he's a serious fundamentalist warmonger type. He's been training and expanding his army ever since he took over, and they're getting tough enough that Nikolai is a little worried about what would happen if he came after Pischia for revenge. But Janek has been fixated on Kiscun for the last few years."

"See, Baron Kiscun has lost all three of his sons. The oldest died fighting the Rogaticans the last time they were at war, the second went off to join the crusade in Anatolia and never came back, and the third... well, he died in a hunting accident that might not have been an accident."

"Baron Kiscun's getting old now, and his wife died years ago. So he's been training his daughter Ezti to take over while he tries to find her a good husband. Ordinarily that would be easy, because Ezti's smart and strong and beautiful and I swear she's got some kind of divine favor from Khersis, and she an amazing archer and she's so good with that spear of hers she can actually beat men sometimes..."

Dita seems to realize she's gushing, and cuts off with a slight blush.

"Um, anyway, she's been looking for a strong alliance because everyone knows if Rogatica goes to war with Kiscun again they're going to win. But Janek ran into her at a tourney a couple of years ago, and decided he was going to marry her and claim all of Kiscun for himself. She hates him of course, but she hasn't been able to find anyone who was willing to stand up to him."

"So if you want to get involved in that mess you could probably make an ally, although you'd end up with an enemy too."

That makes sense. Although one day as you're musing about priorities Aldona points out that there's no way a peasant family that wasn't expecting to have to pay the household tax is going to be able to come up with the money on such short notice. So you might want to have a plan ready to deal with that, or else wait and do the survey after April 15 so people will have a year to save up.

If you raise a new unit of troops and merge it with an existing one their Skill and Discipline stats will be averaged. Also, reorganizing your troops freqeuntly will tend to reduce their Discipline rating.

Ideally what you want to do is decide how many troops you need, and then recruit and trian them all at once. But that would require having the money to equip them all, which would be problematic right now.

Thomasfoolery said:

Could be. They're certainly the only potential threat that might actually destroy a settlement. Bandits or pirates might rob a village and kill a few people, but an aggressive tribe of beastmen could easily wipe out a hamlet or cause serious casualties in an undefended village.

fitzgerald said:

Possibly, but odds are there aren't any banks or money lenders in Eztergrom who have that kind of money. More likely you'd have to make a trip to one of Borjeria's larger cities to arrange the loan, which would end up taking up a month or more of your time. You'd definitely have to go in person, because your family name is the only reason you'd be able to borrow that much cash.

My take on poacher problem: Regulate - as in require registration for hunting. Supply of good archers can be invaluable. Obviously permission to hunt would come with obligations:
1. They count as local militia. Obligated to go under your banner in defense of the Fief. Also required to warn about spotted troubles.
2. Tax. Nothing strenuous, but some fur or skins + smoked jerky regularly delivered would do.
3. Hunting animals in they mating season and hunting feeding mothers is forbidden - so animal population wouldn't diminish.

So, I think it solves potential wife problem. And "how to get barony fast enough" problem. And it's not like Janek wouldn't try something after winning in Kiscun anyway, especially if there would be civil war. ([CK player]Also - Hapsburgplomacy FTW...[/CK player])

Let's arrange a meeting. I'd like to see how she appears in person.

You receive a reply from Baron Kiscun, offering to send his heir to walk the borders with you in April. Apparently the baron is not in the best of health, and has begun delegating such duties.

We're meeting her April to walk the borders.

We are under time pressure to declare our lordship I keep mentioning that we need declare our lordship because we now have a deadline to have accomplished this by.

If we want to invoke Regency Magic we need to declare our lordship

Yes I am repeating the point about needing to declare our lordship.

Its the #1 must do item this turn.

Which again is declare our lordship

[X] Train Tactics with Dominic

Sir Bialis
[X] Recruit more Archers from the locals. Offer amnesty to poachers if they join up, but make sure they know their window of opportunity is limited.

Jaroslaw
[X] Train Rangers (+Skill)

Men-at-arms
[X] Split unit.
-[X] Eight garrison
-[X] Two escort Bialis
-[X] Six escort Dominic
Archers
[X] Train with Sir Bialis (Discipline)
Rangers
[X] Train with Jaroslaw (+Skill)

Other
[X] Clear the Grounds

Minor Actions
[X] Give head maid permission to hire another maid.
[X] Send letter to Chesna asking her to perform the walking of the borders in her father's stead.
[X] Send letter to Baron Rogatica asking for his or his heir's presence for the walking of the borders.
[X] Visit Atalya Bartok in Tamasi to talk to her about the foreign sorceress that she apparently conflicted with.

I am also interested in meeting that daughter of Baron Kiscun later on, and maybe it should be a Dita minor action to carry the letter to Chesna.

[X] Send letter to Chesna asking her to perform the walking of the borders in her father's stead.
[X] Send letter to Baron Rogatica asking for his or his heir's presence for the walking of the borders.

[X] Write Father inquiring if the family has or knows of skilled Engineers that aren't tied up with vital works

So this is a pretty conservative set of orders, but it does set us up pretty well to start handling things in the future, also since it's only march hopefully things aren't going to explode into activity too quickly.

Besides clearing the grounds, Thomasfoolery's plan has all I think. But this can wait a bit.

The 189 SP on Dominic's stat sheet are the treasury, not only his personal funds, aren't they?

...and we have our first adventuring expedition, assuming this plan gets the votes.

According to Dita the problem will be convincing her mother to let her go off with you on what amounts to a week-long camping trip. You may need to visit Castle Pisch in person so you can convince Lala you aren't going to let her daughter get up to any mischief.

You've already written him once, you just haven't heard back yet.

There's no distinction between the two - everything in the Corzu treasury is Dominic's personal funds.
