David Hahn, who attempted to build a breeder reactor. He didn't make a fully-functioning reactor, but he did get an ok neutron source. Just googled him to get the name and details right, and apparently he died at age 39 due to drug and alcohol use. His wikipedia page is actually pretty depressing, I wouldn't recommend reading it

To be fair I took a long hiatus from reading 40k novels after I left playing table top circa fifth edition

I took a big hiatus dealing with 40k lore after reading a lot of Horus Heresy books and getting burned out on the fandom.
It sounds weirder than it is if you think about it. Like, so many books take the time to describe people singing hymns or chants, and Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn trilogy had multiple scenes where the protagonist mused on the music played. In the third book he even complained that a bar was playing the watered down version of a music genre usually enjoyed by non-chaos mutants.
If it helps, maybe stay away from the Horus Heresy entirely, since that is not only dense, but also turns to shit during the Siege of Terra series because of Dan Abnett.
That's a good series, if kinda depressive. Still, it pays a lot of respect towards Imperium whenever they show, and that for all the horrors the 40k galaxy holds, shows how utterly terrifying a human Crusade can look to the ones standing in its path.
I actually like the imperium lore.and I prefer 40k to be 40k, not 41k or whatever-K the HH happened in.
One of my favorite scenes was when the Necrons realized these orks weren't invading, they were fleeing.
Horus Heresy is 30k. I just assumed the fatigue came from Imperial overexposure, which can definitely be an issue. You don't get many other PoVs with the Imperium hogging the spotlight.
That's what I did with my current one. It wasn't a bad experience? But, it was nerve-wracking dealing with potentially breaking a $500 component and then troubleshooting everything afterward. Not really sure I'd want to do that again when I'm at the point where I can spend a bit of extra money and not need to worry about it.
