(Partially) fixing the tag system

I think you are right on both counts.
Character inserts are just an element and being a crossover or multicross fit fine in genre right next to the classics.
*moves*
Would "no crossover" be a genre that needs to be represented if the other two are?
I'd consider that more the default, and generally I don't think 'no X' tags are gonna be featured too prominently, even though I'll note them in the longer list.
I would suggest merging 'cyoa inspired' and 'cyoa influenced'
Agree, but, at a quick glance, there's a lot of specific cyoa tags, but there's also a bunch of generic stuff I can combine. Gonna deprioritise that for a later batch though.

My next collection currently has [gender] protagonist and [sexuality] protagonist, sexuality stuff, dom/sub variations, and original creation markers. I might try and standardise/link more fandoms tags, and the NSFW variants, as well.

If possible, I'd suggest categories of tags: major character in this story, important minor character on this story, genre, location/world, sex/relationship, plot type (ex. Time travel, betrayal, Dark!Harry, isekai), source material, and then more custom "plot beat" type stuff

I'd also add a cap on how many tags a given story can have in each category. Avoid authors listing every character mentioned even once in the story.

If you do it right it'd also make categorical searches easier too

I can make informal categories of tags, but we don't have the functionality to make a technical distinction. Adding functionality isn't something I can do, but tag categorisation is on the admin list (though I'd think a lesser priority than some other things).

With regard to [Character] tags, that might be a bit beyond me. A lot of characters exist, and they mostly don't have anything in common spelling wise (so I can't search for a big chunk of them, like I can 'male X'). Where they do have similar spelling, they might be two different characters with the same name, so I can't really merge/link full names with first names.

And then you get into [Character]/[Character] tags, and that increases the variations exponentially. So I'm probably just gonna give that a miss.
