With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Thank you, corrected.
Given that the Gaim are obviously based on ants and similar eusocial insect species, the queens likely lay eggs by the thousand on a near constant basis.

And with their biotech bent I also wouldn't be surprised if they have massive cloning facilities as well.
Ant queens can lay a couple of thousand eggs per day. There are six gaim queens total. To sustain a population of six billion, each gaim queen would have to lay about 70,000 per day. And those gaim are all more chemically complex than ants.

And it was Yellow Lantern Raynunn.

I mean, do we know anything about how long Gaim live? I know they age, and I know that stealing drones from other queens is a key component of Gaim cold warfare. Given their bioengineered nature they could easily have a lifespan of multiple centuries, which would reduce the required reproduction rate, and would explain why stealing drones is worth the effort.

But as I said; also given said bioengineered nature it seems entirely probable that they engage in artificial methods of reproduction, especially since the majority of their drones are mass produced nonsapients.

Another part you missed from the Gaim guide.

Egg Drones
(laborae ovumii)
A special breed of tool drone, egg drones are small
members of the Gaim species designed to augment the
breeding capabilities of the High Queens. Attached to
rudimentary egg-laying organs, the egg drone bears the
direct pheropathic connection to the Queen that birthed
it, turning it into a genetic extension of the Queen
herself. Each egg drone is attached to a single type of
egg-layer, pumping out streams of breed specific larvae.
Egg drones are limited to creating drones and warrior
breed Gaim, but they do so in enormous numbers –
leaving the more specialised breeds to the Queens.

Egg drones are small and have vestigial limbs like most
other drones, their pedipalps used to hold them to their
egg-laying organs. They are pheropathic puppets of the
High Queens, able to match the genetic structure of their
broodline exactly. In this way, the egg drones might be
responsible for the actual birthing of the larvae, but it
is the High Queens' genetic jellies allowiung them into
chrysalise and join the broodline fully.
They normally live for no longer than a year as the
breeds they lay eggs for are quickly made redundant as
new types evolve.

Presumably because of the captain informing her. As Ambassador on station, she's pretty much the highest authority for Minbari on Babylon 5, isn't she?
Pretty much, even leaving aside her role as a member of the Grey Council.

I guess Minbari don't have too much stigma against same-sex relationships. I doubt 'modern' Earth here has either, but who knows, given the show was written in the 90's.
As noted, it was at least heavily implied that Ivanova and Talia Winters had a thing, but it was rather more subtle than DS9's "Dax's past life's love" episode...

and Talia's personality was fake.
Was it? It's been awhile, but I took it as the sleeper personality was the fake one, especially as it's heavily implied by Bester that Psi Corps dissected her afterwards.

...I'm going to be honest...the name doesn't really mean anything to me, but hopefully Babylon!Paul gets as lucky as Paul did with Jade. Even if it took a...while.
Given canonically Kelsey was one of Bester's sidekick agents, I wouldn't hold out much hope for that.

And there's the dig site.

Mongul's type seem obsessed with manual labour, possibly because giving labourers who hate you advanced equipment is just asking for the intellectual sort to either engage in the hard to detect sort of sabotage or build weapons sophisticated enough that they might actually be able to succeed in liberating themselves. So it's an opencast mine, a pit dug down with shelves in the pit walls for labourers, equipment and excavated earth to go to and fro. Digging is being undertaken with shovels thrust in the earth with the assistance of powered frames, a small number of workers carrying sonic lances to break up rock.

But if this world is anything like the one in Salvation Run, they'll be an underground facility somewhere around-.

Ah.

Yes, there it is. There's a tunnel… And they're excavating the area around it, They're definitely breached it, not 'found the entrance', but forced entry through the metal it's made of. And now they're… Following it from the outside. I… Think there's also a crew-. Yes, they're entering the tunnel too, and…

Yellow crystal. And the people moving it are… Trembling, and the overseers are keeping their weapons handy.

In terms of species… It's a mix. Not a lot of Mongul's own species, just for a couple of overseers. The others are an eclectic mix of species from across a dozen Sectors where Mongul's known to have travelled. And-.

And those are tamaraneans. Carrying the crystal by the barrowload. Might be because they don't suffer the same long term consequences from exposure, or it might just be that the overseers like seeing their open reactions; they weep as they work.

I'm not seeing anything I couldn't destroy or anyone I couldn't kill. The guards are exclusively from physically robust species, wearing thick armour and carrying both electrified whips for those too lazy to learn how to use whips properly and plasma carbines to be used in the case of a camp revolt.

As the man I spoke to previously said, there's no wall.

I'm not seeing a sensor network capable of detecting me. And while the ships above us could easily roll and point their weapons downwards, I'm not seeing any weapons that are a threat to me. So long as I avoid the yellow crystals.

Except… I wouldn't be able to. They'd just need a conventional bomb in one of those barrows and my rings would lose the ability to affect things externally. And my armour… Okay, with crumbler gauntlets I could punch my way through eventually, but… Ships, hostages.

Constantly monitoring my environment, and with my stealth systems very much engaged, I float down into the pit towards the tunnel entrance.

Been a while since Salvation Run. Wasn't Selina put into a simulation where she had to fight the Justice League, or… Something? And she won, which-.

I'd have thought that Apokoliptian training would be more about unwinnable scenarios than power fantasies. Maybe Kalibak was having a hard day and wanted an easy workout session, and forgot to reset it when he left?

Not seeing a Green Lantern. Only limited structures on the surface, mostly what looks like a landing ground and a couple of foxholes. Which-.

Are they lifting off the entire work detail when the sun goes down? Depending on the frequency of attacks, that might make sense. No shuttles sitting on the ground. To prevent escape or to prevent local creatures infesting the fleet? The crystals are being loaded into actual shipping containers, barrows being wheeled up a ramp and the crystals being dropped in to the open top. The crystals are… There are only a couple of sizes and they're clean of earth and rock.

They're not mining them. They're just taking them out of something.

No sign that they're detecting me… And there's the tunnel entrance. Ah, they've got a force field set up over the entrance. Perhaps they're living in here? But while I don't want to try my phasing system against the Apokoliptian metal, getting in just requires that I wait until they let the next barrow convoy out…

And I float through.

I've seen Apokoliptian technology; Canis uses it, and I've seen Grayven's command ship a few times. But this it more… Workmanlike. A utility tunnel or a transportation tunnel… There's only so science fictiony you can make it. The area around the breach doesn't have functional lighting, but only a short distance away line of some sort of luminescent… Paint? Start glowing, and providing enough light for the workers to see by.

The concentration of guards is higher in here, I note.

Alright, the barrows are coming from that direction, so that's where I'll go.

A few crystals appear to have fallen on the floor, broken and-.

Ah, no, they're probably there to extend the construct nullifying effect here in case the Green Lantern escapes. They're the only broken crystals I've seen so it's probably deliberate. I wonder how the effect changes, broken versus whole-.

Idiot. Mongul is the sort of person who would be aware of the Reach, and who they would be aware of in turn. I'll have to notify Dox about this-. Ring, is it possible to transmit a data packet?

Connection unavailable.

Thought not. Send it the first moment it's possible.

Compliance.

Alright, there's some sort of chamber coming up. Can't… See any workers or guards, but there wasn't a turnoff that I saw…

Well this feels like a trap. Power to crumbler gauntlets and slow ahead…

And duck and scan because I'm not in Kansas anymore! This is-. Apokolips? Grim industry, metal and stone everywhere, giant Darkseid statues, prevailing aura of despair and desolation… Yep, yep, all present and correct! Some sort of stealth boom tube? Or-. Wait. Catwoman's virtual reality simulator. How would.. I tell-? Not the most important thing right now. Just stay crouching in this chimney, and-.

Parademons. Actual mutant soldiers, not those weird animal thingies from some of the recent D.C. films. They're taking positions in the spires and chimneys around me, aiming… Aiming in all directions. Waiting for something.

I look away from them and at the rest of the arena, trying to see what else is happening. None of the buildings are moving, and below… Below, I can see Lowlies-.

No, wait, those aren't Lowlies. Lowlies generally look human. Those are more of Mongul's slaves. And they're… Waiting. What are they-?

A nearby guard tower explodes in an emerald mushroom cloud! A glowing green figure descends as the parademons raise their blasters. Ah, great it-.

Wait, that's… Not Lantern Gaart. That's Green Lantern Raker Qarrigat, the First Lantern who led the Green Lantern Corps' attack on Apokolips. That was a long time ago, but I don't have good data on how long members of his species can live. They would have said something if he was still alive, wouldn't they? I mean, the Justice League attack that liberated the Forever People wasn't subtle.

Lantern Qarrigat makes a construct barrier around himself as the parademons open fire, their shots plinking impotently off the outer surface. And then-

"Yaagh!"

Lantern Gaart comes in, precise shots slamming into the distracted parademons and knocking them from their perches. Good? Great? Freeing a ancient hero of the Green Lantern Corps wasn't on my bingo card this morning, but I'll take it. And then-.

Then the ground shakes, and the structures hum, and the surface of the buildings the parademons and I are holding on to sort of… Glowing tron lines, a New God is doing something! Small brackets extrude from the walls, each supporting one of the yellow crystals. Lantern Qarrigat looks around in alarm, the intensity of his glow already decreasing, while Lantern Gaart takes cover in a ruined tower block.

"They found us quickly!"

"Yes." Kalibak strolls down the central pathway beneath us. "I did."

Huh. I always thought 'outer Talia' was fake because she was being used for infiltration, but the wiki agrees with you.

Ah, Kalibak...the Radditz of Apokalyps. Nobody takes him seriously and completely overshadowed by his brother(s).

...given that his having a "live fire against (suitably weakened) Lanterns" training range honestly isn't that surprising.

Huh. I always thought 'outer Talia' was fake because she was being used for infiltration, but the wiki agrees with you.
It makes sense if you consider that, IIRC, the sleeper personality thing was highly experimental, so they presumably couldn't be sure how long it would last once the activation phrase was given.

(This also explains the dissection. They couldn't be sure how long before she might revert and that wouldn't have been pleasant for anyone involved.)

I assumed the yellow crystals disabled green rings by connecting to fear, and therefore orange lantern in general would be less affected and enlightened lanterns of all types would be immune? Otherwise, how does the crystal work?

Are hush tubes, once generated, fixed in space until they shut, or can either side if the aperture be moved around? Since they don't have visible boundaries it would be possible to put them in identical tunnels between planets and just leave them active, depending on the power costs to keep them running. Sort of like the Dolmen gates.

I suppose another possibility is that OL encountered a Black Mercy, given how sudden the cutover was.

Huh.

So if this is a simulation then it's likely used to demoralized the Lanterns by making them fail to save the slaves, or to demoralize the slaves by seeing the Lantern fail.

They would have said something if he was still alive, wouldn't they? I mean, the Justice League attack that liberated the Forever People wasn't subtle.

Assuming they kept them at the same place.

And there's the dig site.
All right, time to see what the heck is going on on the surface here. Natural mines or Apokoliptian weapons factory? What kind of defences are the slaves under, beyond the threat of local animals? And how easy will it be to wreck it all?

Mongul's type seem obsessed with manual labour, possibly because giving labourers who hate you advanced equipment is just asking for the intellectual sort to either engage in the hard to detect sort of sabotage or build weapons sophisticated enough that they might actually be able to succeed in liberating themselves. So it's an opencast mine, a pit dug down with shelves in the pit walls for labourers, equipment and excavated earth to go to and fro. Because there's not a lot of difference between, say, laser drills and laser guns outside of range. But when the guards have guns and the workers don't, it's a lot more difficult to act up.

But if this world is anything like the one in Salvation Run, they'll be an underground facility somewhere around-.

Ah.
Because Apokolips does love their apocalypse bunkers. usually filled with terrors beyond human understanding. Or at least big bombs.

Yes, there it is. There's a tunnel… And they're excavating the area around it, They're definitely breached it, not 'found the entrance', but forced entry through the metal it's made of. And now they're… Following it from the outside. I… Think there's also a crew-. Yes, they're entering the tunnel too, and…
Probably safer this way, given there would be defences at the doors that might take exception to unauthorised visitors.

And-.
Slaves from all over the sector, no doubt. Likely taken in conflict, but it's not impossible bought or stolen from traders.

And those are tamaraneans. Carrying the crystal by the barrowload. Might be because they don't suffer the same long term consequences from exposure, or it might just be that the overseers like seeing their open reactions; they weep as they work.
Because they feel things deeply but the emotion is not lingering. Part of why Kor'iandr would make a good Blue - She feels strongly, but trauma slides right off unless it's really bad, allowing her to keep her hopefulness in the face of a harsh universe..

I'm not seeing anything I couldn't destroy or anyone I couldn't kill. The guards are exclusively from physically robust species, wearing thick armour and carrying both electrified whips for those too lazy to learn how to use whips properly and plasma carbines to be used in the case of a camp revolt.
And some gunners would be perched above the general population, able to cut down a knot of unruly workers without wasting other resources. Efficient cruelty.

As the man I spoke to previously said, there's no wall.

I'm not seeing a sensor network capable of detecting me. And while the ships above us could easily roll and point their weapons downwards, I'm not seeing any weapons that are a threat to me. So long as I avoid the yellow crystals.
Since they seem to produce some radiated emotional energy, if the descriptions of trembling and weeping workers is anything to go by.

Except… I wouldn't be able to. They'd just need a conventional bomb in one of those barrows and my rings would lose the ability to affect things externally. And my armour… Okay, with crumbler gauntlets I could punch my way through eventually, but… Ships, hostages.
Meaning if he wants to get anyone out of here, the fleet has to be dealt with first.

Constantly monitoring my environment, and with my stealth systems very much engaged, I float down into the pit towards the tunnel entrance.

Been a while since Salvation Run. Wasn't Selina put into a simulation where she had to fight the Justice League, or… Something? And she won, which-.
Presumably they were considerably nerfed. Evidently the simulation had safeguards to avoid killing prisoners unjustly.

Which-.
Probably being held near some Fear Crystals to maximise his weakness.

Or they 'acquired' a Boom Tube Generator or two. Unlikely, I know. So the crystals are shipped out aboard the shuttles, then they come back for the workers... Shows their priorities,

They're not mining them. They're just taking them out of something.

No sign that they're detecting me… And there's the tunnel entrance. Ah, they've got a force field set up over the entrance. Perhaps they're living in here? But while I don't want to try my phasing system against the Apokoliptian metal, getting in just requires that I wait until they let the next barrow convoy out…
No wasting energy forcing an entrance when you can just wait for the door. Watch out for subtle tells, though, such as environmental disruptions to smoke or shedding raindrops on a clean floor.

Ah, the classic 'lights built into the seams between walls and roof and/or floor.'

The concentration of guards is higher in here, I note.

Alright, the barrows are coming from that direction, so that's where I'll go.
Presumably storage, rather than manufacturing.

He's seen what powderised crystals do, saturating an area with Yellow Light so that all other colours fizzle and get stifled out. I imagine the intact forms are simply less diffuse but more intense.

Idiot. Mongul is the sort of person who would be aware of the Reach, and who they would be aware of in turn. I'll have to notify Dox about this-. Ring, is it possible to transmit a data packet?

Connection unavailable.
Oooh, that'd be bad if the Reach got any of this on their side.

Thought not. Send it the first moment it's possible.

Compliance.
Presumably updating the reports with data as it assembles it before initial sending.

Alright, there's some sort of chamber coming up. Can't… See any workers or guards, but there wasn't a turnoff that I saw…

Well this feels like a trap. Power to crumbler gauntlets and slow ahead…
Oh, I just bet it is...

And duck and scan because I'm not in Kansas anymore! This is-. Apokolips? Catwoman's virtual reality simulator. How would.. I tell-? Not the most important thing right now. Just stay crouching in this chimney, and-.
So it's like an incredibly detailed holodeck. Albeit with poorly marked boundaries, if OL stumbled in without noticing.

There's quite a variety of designs over the years. From the 'brutish warrior' creations of Kirby to more mundane soldiers in the 90's and the barely-humanoid bug-folk of later years...

The sim tailoring its props to the current 'user', eh?

Wait, that's… Not Lantern Gaart. That's Green Lantern Raker Qarrigat, the First Lantern who led the Green Lantern Corps' attack on Apokolips. That was a long time ago, but I don't have good data on how long members of his species can live. They would have said something if he was still alive, wouldn't they? I mean, the Justice League attack that liberated the Forever People wasn't subtle.
Raker, eh? Probably a legacy piece from the time of its' creation. At least this pegs the facility as dating back to the war.

Lantern Qarrigat makes a construct barrier around himself as the parademons open fire, their shots plinking impotently off the outer surface. And then-

"Yaagh!"
No doubt a lot more skilled in the art of visualisation, given the early rings had even less AI than the modern spec.

Lantern Gaart comes in, precise shots slamming into the distracted parademons and knocking them from their perches. Good? Great? Freeing a ancient hero of the Green Lantern Corps wasn't on my bingo card this morning, but I'll take it. And then-.
More likely this is a fantasy scenario for Gaart, making him feel mighty before...

Then the ground shakes, and the structures hum, and the surface of the buildings the parademons and I are holding on to sort of… Glowing tron lines, a New God is doing something! Small bracket extrude from the walls, each supporting one of the yellow crystals. Lantern Qarrigat looks around in alarm, the intensity of his glow already decreasing, while Lantern Gaart takes cover in a ruined tower block.
...The fall comes. Crushing his will and drawing out fear. Could be this is how the facility manufactures the crystals.

"They found us quickly!"

"Yes." Kalibak strolls down the central pathway beneath us. "I did."
Most likely another prop of the sim, as why the hell would Kalibak be here and not immediately going after the thieves above?

All right, the shape of this is becoming clear. The facility dates back to the war between Darkseid and the Guardians, where the simulation tested the Fear Crystals against captured Green Lanterns like Gaart. Possibly even harvesting the resulting terror of defeat to produce more. And Mongul Junior tossed Gaart in here to contain him while drawing out his Fear...

Renegade!Paul (Grayven) called Kalibak "horrors of war." Umm. These crystals, properly integrated into weaponry or with meditation on divine commands, could be a MASSIVE upgrade for Kalibak specifically.

"Could kill a Guardian" strength, even if he makes a few mistakes in such a battle, as we'd expect from his personality. Probably couldn't kill an Orange-infused Controller though.

Would Kalibak tolerate a New God bodyguard or administrator? This facility doesn't appear to possess a lab for DeSaad's sort of research. Unless it is on a ship or unless he regularly receives individuals via boom tube. Gargon is an obscure one that filled DeSaad's role, and is probably clever enough to avoid Kalibak's tantrums. Titan and more specifically his Rune Rod would be beneficial for Paul, but his talents seem to lie with real troops. Probably not here.

Given canonically Kelsey was one of Bester's sidekick agents, I wouldn't hold out much hope for that.

...gonna be real here, I completely blanked on the fact that she was named character...for being barely ten minutes in a single episode until she got turned to dust by Ironheart.

If he's talking about the insectoid versions from the DCEU, then he shouldn't know about them, since they appeared long after he went to Earth 16.
Ah... They were like that in Justice League: War and Injustice... I think they were depicted like that earlier as well, but I'm not sure where. I'm mostly just complaining.
Thank you, corrected.

But both of those came out after 2013. The SI shouldn't really know how they looked.
Trailers..? As I said, I'm mostly just complaining about what they did to-.

Wait. Justice League: War is basically a copy of the Nu52 Justice League story. Assume that he's talking about that.
