With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

It is a cavern, because I can see the rock pillars which are supporting the rock and soil above, but I've got no idea how something like that could form naturally and it doesn't look artificial. There are more glowing crystals to provide illumination, though it's a little hard to tell how big things are without a reference. Closer, it looks like… This is part of a city? Built into the side of a gigantic.. stalagmite..?

Its been more than a few years but this sounds like the capital city of the Drow, Menzoberranzan. From what we've seen they certainly behave like Drow.

Hopefully he quickly understands that and we can get on with it, instead of dragging this out. Disable the local guards, brand whoever seems to be the leader, ask some questions, get some answers. Then decide to do enough house cleaning for these likely drow to stop fucking about, before finding out how to get back to where he came from.

Is this HOMM 5 dungeon of all things? How? Why? Unless there is another setting with underground big eared slaver elfs, stalacmite cities with pink cristalls and enslaved-nipple-pierced-muzzled minotaurs without loincloths.
Oh, well done! Welcome to Ashan, everyone. Sorry that I missed this earlier.

"Mauler." It reminds me a little of the Horned Demon from Heroes of Might and Magic five. Without slowing further Adom moves his right hand to its jaw and twists, snapping its neck. He then drops it into the mists below us. "Minor Demons in the service of Aym. It heals any wound to its flesh almost instantly. Be careful not to rip them in half or you would have two of them to fight."
The plurality seems inconsistent here.
'Demon'?
'it'?
Or else some of the singular pronouns should be pluralised?

I was looking for mentions of Heroes of Might and Magic, and this excerpt gave me the amusing image of Oh El or Mazikeen seeing a Horned Demon and saying it reminds them a little of a mauler demon.

Actually come to think of it, this whole thing could be another illusion mindfuck. Oh El is into Heroes of Might and Magic V, so whatever magical thing is going on here plucked that from him and is fabricating the world he wants to see. For some unknown reason, and somehow bypassing his mental and magical defences (I should hope he has a telepathic baffle on after what happened last episode). Not placing a lot of probability on this, just felt I should mention the possibility since it would neatly explain the apparent incongruity.

Provide a quote from the story where that happened, otherwise everyone will just think that you're making shit up.

And why exactly would a ring charge be a problem for him?

It's not like every comic featuring a Lantern has them run out of energy in every story.

He thinks that Paul failing to create a ring in the scene where he tries to dig around in the Honden in an attempt to and ends up with Larfleezes original ring instead is the same scene as when he goes into the honden to recharge, which IIRC he did for the first time during the anti-life because he was in an afterlife. I think it was the aztec one. He doesn't have his lantern so he just kind of fucks off into the Honden for a moment and looks for structures that resemble personal lanterns, or maybe it was the central battery, I'm a bit fuzzy.

Dark elves too, hence the name svartalfheim "dark elf home" as opposed to alfheim "elf home"
Those who know what they're talking about agree that "svartalf" meant dwarf, and also was probably only used as a word at all in the Christian era. And we know nothing - "less than nothing" is defensible - about alfheim and the alfar.

But then, that's never stopped anyone before. The whole notion of Nine Realms has literally no textual or cultural evidence in its support, either.

My guess was Morgana's evil fae paralell Earth that the Renegade's already seen, but that's probably better.

A shitton of what we know about Norse Mythology is from the Elder Edda, its hard to find solid archaeological sources from vikings. More the 'hit it until the red water comes out' types than the 'lets make lasting record for people to find several hundred years later' types.

Does it break the rules if I complain about Kier Starmer making it impossible for me to view that image?
It's an image of 3 panels from a comic showing Zor getting trapped by his own paralysis spell, like Paul said he did.
Hey, this is QQ. I ain't judging.
Apparently that's what Gemworld decided to call its alicorns.

I guess the possibility that the portal led to Gemworld wasn't as unlikely as I thought it was, unless Paul isn't actually in HoMM and it's some sort of illusion.

This is 100% true.

Svartalf still means "Black Elf".

I would be very unsurprised if "alf" was a name for a CLASS of beings and not a GROUP of beings: Think "svart" similar to "unseelie" and "alf" similar to "fey". I have read theories that the "alfar" originally ment something closer to an ancestor spirit. Then "svartalf" could mean something in the vicinity of "the unsanctified dead" (unsanctified because they were pre-Christian)

There is also the interesting "coincidence" that one of the translations for the english "elf", is "tomte" the definite form of which, "tomten" is also the definite form of plot (of land): "Tomten är på tomten" translates to "The brownie is on the plot", suggesting a bit of semantic confusion between the being and where it lives. Compare with the brownie and domovoi.

Question: Is there a version of the Teen Titans on your version of The DCAU/Earth 12? I'm asking because I recall that in the Static Shock animated series, there's a crossover episode with Batman where Batman mentions Robin being with the Titans to explain his absence from the episode. Also, in a later episode, the Titans are referenced again, and they allude to a "green one", hinting at Beast Boy's existence.

The first three are wearing pretty good plate and chain. The helmets are open-faced and provide no protection at all for their ridiculous ears, but they're reasonable. Their shields are large, and they're using them to provide cover both-

Fzp! Fzp!

-for themselves and for the crossbowmen just behind them. Naturally, those bolts don't do anything to me… Ah, looks like they're covered in something noxious.

"I appreciate that my arrival was a surprise, but-."

The shields part as a… Mature female elf wearing leather fetish gear steps up, a glowing ball of something in her hands. Okay, that's a little more than I'm prepared to tolerate in the name of making a good impression. I-.

And I'm... Not there any more. A larger room, large stone blocks used to make the floor and the walls while the roof is stone. Ritual symbols on the floor and… Glowing magical barriers all around me.

"Okay, teleportation into a magical cell." I look through the glowing barrier into the dimly-lit hall beyond. Three figures, elves by their jutting ears. Two women showing more skin than women their age should, though to be fair they've got the figures for it. One fully dressed man a little closer and dressed… Better than those I've encountered so far, but not quite so well as grandfather's lingerie models at the back. I try smiling "Not a bad idea. If it makes you feel happier. Now, could someone please tell me what's going on?"

The elf man narrows his eyes. "How are you still alive?"

"Three meals a day, breathing, the blessing of the Ophidian..?" I shake my head. "Can you ask a more precise question?"

"You died."

"Yes." I nod. "Twice so far. I don't let it get me down."

One of the women, the one with the wedge of white hair standing out in all directions from her head, draws herself up slightly. "You don't know who we are, do you?"

"Not the foggiest."

"Or where you are."

"And you deduced all that just from me telling it to you directly. Truly, nothing gets by you."

The other elf woman, this one with black hair worn partly in a high ponytail and partially free falling, looks to her colleague. "Perhaps there was damage from the delayed resurrection?"

"Breaking out in three, two,-"

White hair raises her hand, glaring, black-green light flickering over her fingers!

"-one,-"

White… Smoke erupts from the part of the barrier in front of me and flows into me, doing… Nothing?

"-zero." I reach forwards, laying my hands on the barrier and feeding.

Black hair glances from the barrier to her colleague and back again. "Why did that not work?"

The barrier flickers once, twice, and it's… It doesn't feel like it usually does but something's clearly happening, and then it's down and I walk out of the ritual space.

"Explain, or I make you explain."

"Ah." The male elf backs up slightly, hands open. A pointless gesture given the fact that magic doesn't require you to be holding something in your hands. "I believe that my… Mistresses, are confused as to how you're alive when we all saw you die."

I halt my march, since he's being helpful. "I can't think of an occasion where you could have seen me die."

"Ah, that.. is…" He raises his hands a little higher. "If I may..?"

I nod, and he makes a gesture, white-gold light dancing around his hands…

Someone appears in a recumbent position-. Oh, it's a corpse-.

Oh, it's… My corpse.

Huh.

"I believe that Resurrection usually restores the body to life, so you understand our confusion. None of us practice Light Magic at the highest levels. Unless you had a brother, in which case you have my deepest condolences."

Genetic scans match. No ring on the corpse, obviously. No tattoos, because I got those after…

I suppose that it was unrealistic to expect that every version of me survived on whatever world they ended up on.

"Where am I?"

"I'm afraid I never asked what god he worshipped-."

"No. Where am I, here, now. What is this city called?"

"You have the pleasure of standing in the city of Salgunsal, in the king-. Ah, nation of Ygg-Chall." I frown at the hesitation. "Your… Ah, doppelgänger, expressed disquiet at the idea of a kingdom without a king."

I nod firmly. "Definitionally, a kingdom requires a king or queen. But what world is this?"

"This-? 'World'?" I nod, and he looks back to the two matriarchs for guidance. Since they don't seem inclined to offer it, he considers his options for a moment before replying. "This is the world of Ashan."

"Oh. Marvellous."

"Do you..? Mean to say that you are from outside of Ashan?"

I sigh. Assuming that my memories of Heroes of Might and Magic V and VI are accurate -which given that the backgrounds contradict each other at least one set aren't- Ashan is the creation of the dragon goddess Asha -thus the name- and is otherwise isolated from the multiverse. Possibly deliberately, possibly not, but that may well be a known fact in the setting and as such someone coming from outside of their pocket universe is a slightly bigger deal than the D.C.U.'s 'take a ticket and wait to be called' response.

Now, the Dark Elves worship Malassa, the Dragon Goddess of Darkness, so they're not going to try and kill me for being a heretical abomination. Kill me to steal my ring or other equipment or just for fun, possibly, depending on which clan these elves are from, certainly, but not as a point of principle. But beyond their religious affiliation the different clans manage their own affairs and I… Don't remember much about them. The only clan name I remember is the Soulscar clan who were a bunch of demon worshippers.

But unlike… My clone brother there, I've got two fully charged rings and there aren't a lot of things around here that can stop me. So worrying about exactly what they want or think probably isn't worthwhile. I need to meet up with Angelica and Mazikeen and then try and get back to our Earth. So I think that honesty is the best policy.

"Yes, and I'd like to get back as quickly as possible."

The two biddies at the back are very still and very quiet. I suppose they didn't bother to ask… Him, and…

Ah, right. He wouldn't have had my anti-magic protections. And without a soul, it's entirely possible that he couldn't use those experience obelisk things to speed up his learning. The damage spells I remember from the game should have been counterable with a power ring, but there are probably all sorts of magic effects in-universe that weren't standard combat spells. Darn, because being able to visit every Crystal of Revelation and Planetarium on the planet in a couple of hours would be… Rather useful.

"Ah." The male elf glances back at his bosses, droops slightly when he sees that they aren't give him any direction, and then returns his full attention to me. "Why don't I see how we can help with that?"

You do remember that he has a set of tattoos that make him invisible to magic?
Forgotten Realms gods use Divine Power, not magic.

You also do remember that he has the piece of a powerful universal aspect inside him that would make many hesitant to attack him if they could sense it?
Really? And what did the Endless think of that? Because that's basically what the Forgotten Realm's Greater Dieties are.

But it gets worse! Because their equilivant of the Source said the one and only time they can use their full powers is to smite intruding beings like Orange Lantern.

Again, not really anything he can't deal with. I assume those are some manner of lethal poison upgrade which would normally be quite effective against anything with a biology. Sadly, if they can't touch flesh, they're not a threat.

Well, at least there's fanservice aplenty. Sadly wasted on OL, but I guess we can drink it in.

Teleportation spell, eh? One based on direct line of sight, since his obfuscating tattoos prevent remote aiming.

"Okay, teleportation into a magical cell." I look through the glowing barrier into the dimly-lit hall beyond. Three figures, elves by their jutting ears. Naturally, he's going to be walking out of there as soon as he's decided he has enough information...

The elf man narrows his eyes. "How are you still alive?"

"Three meals a day, breathing, the blessing of the Ophidian..?" I shake my head. "Can you ask a more precise question?"
...Oh-ho. Did they have a local SI insertion who didn't make the grade, perhaps?

"You died."

"Yes." I nod. "Twice so far. I don't let it get me down."
A pity most of his other variants don't gain that luxury. Besides the Black Lantern one. And the former Anti-Green, but he's overcome that issue.

One of the women, the one with the wedge of white hair standing out in all directions from her head, draws herself up slightly. "You don't know who we are, do you?"

"Not the foggiest."
Ah, that Liefeldian 90's hair. Always a classic.

"Or where you are."

"And you deduced all that just from me telling it to you directly. Truly, nothing gets by you."
Evidently not intellect-based spellcasting, perhaps? 😏

The other elf woman, this one with black hair worn partly in a high ponytail and partially free falling, looks to her colleague. "Perhaps there was damage from the delayed resurrection?"

"Breaking out in three, two,-"
Ah, I see he's had enough tomfoolery. This should be quite entertaining for them if they were used to a local Paul.

White hair raises her hand, glaring, black-green light flickering over her fingers!

"-one,-"
That just screams dark or necromantic magic, probably something intended to inflict pain in order to head off any ideas of escaping.

White… Smoke erupts from the part of the barrier in front of me and flows into me, doing… Nothing?

"-zero." I reach forwards, laying my hands on the barrier and feeding.
I'm guessing his metaphysique is different enough that the spell can't affect him the way it should have.

Black hair glances from the barrier to her colleague and back again. "Why did that not work?"

The barrier flickers once, twice, and it's… It doesn't feel like it usually does but something's clearly happening, and then it's down and I walk out of the ritual space.
At the very least, he has a functional anti-magic effect for certain.

"Explain, or I make you explain."

"Ah." The male elf backs up slightly, hands open. A pointless gesture given the fact that magic doesn't require you to be holding something in your hands. "I believe that my… Mistresses, are confused as to how you're alive when we all saw you die."
And finally they get closer to the point.

I halt my march, since he's being helpful. "I can't think of an occasion where you could have seen me die."

"Ah, that.. is…" He raises his hands a little higher. "If I may..?"
But one errant twitch or hint of hostile spellcasting, and you get to see what being orange is like.

I nod, and he makes a gesture, white-gold light dancing around his hands…

Someone appears in a recumbent position-. Oh, it's a corpse-.
Ah, this will be his local counterpart.

Oh, it's… My corpse.

Huh.
Which is probably a little creepy, especially since this would be the first time he's seen a dead 'him' before. His previous deaths didn't exactly leave bodies, after all.

"I believe that Resurrection usually restores the body to life, so you understand our confusion. None of us practice Light Magic at the highest levels. Unless you had a brother, in which case you have my deepest condolences."

Genetic scans match. No ring on the corpse, obviously. No tattoos, because I got those after…
I'm betting he hadn't gained a soul, which the resurrective magics would have worked upon. Hence the apparent failure.

I suppose that it was unrealistic to expect that every version of me survived on whatever world they ended up on.

"Where am I?"
The worrying thing is what happened to his Ring, and what colour it was?

"I'm afraid I never asked what god he worshipped-."

"No. Where am I, here, now. What is this city called?"
Given the starting state, he would probably have avoided the matter until forced to address it.

Ah, exactly the kind of pedantry he would have shared with his counterpart. Though a kingdom between rulers doesn't really stop being a kingdom. usually because someone steps up to take the crown one way or another.

Ah, Heroes of Might and Magic. Not a bad game series, though it's one I kind of bounced off the time or two I tried it.

I sigh. Assuming that my memories of Heroes of Might and Magic V and VI are accurate -which given that the backgrounds contradict each other at least one set aren't- Ashan is the creation of the dragon goddess Asha -thus the name- and is otherwise isolated from the multiverse. Possibly deliberately, possibly not, but that may well be a known fact in the setting and as such someone coming from outside of their pocket universe is a slightly bigger deal than in the D.C.U.'s 'take a ticket and wait to be called' response.
There are actually several distinct 'universes' in the series. Including at least one technologically-advanced side-plot world, if I remember right. At least he's familiar with this one. As to why? Blame developer hand-offs and IP changes over the years.

And I'm guessing these ones are just slavers. Given that demon-worshipping would probably have some visible effect on their style.

The hard part will be conserving charge, if you can't drain magic to do so. And that also assumes they ended up here and begs the question of where they did if so.

"Yes, and I'd like to get back as quickly as possible."

The two biddies at the back are very still and very quiet. I suppose they didn't bother to ask… Him, and…
Given that it's probably very, very difficult to cross dimensions around here, you may as well have asked to kiss the Moon.

The joy of OL getting shunted into a much lower-level counterpart's playthrough: He's overlevelled and over-geared.

"Ah." The male elf glances back at his bosses, droops slightly when he sees that they aren't give him any direction, and then returns his full attention to me. "Why don't I see how we can help with that?"
I can already see his train of thought: 'Okay, let's not anger the clearly very powerful version of our glowing fellow. Even if he's askign the impossible...'

So, then. Trapped in a pocket universe where your local counterpart died. That certainly raises the question of what became of his Ring, or whatever equipment he acquired upon running low on charge... 🤔 Did he somehow end up in the Player Character role of one of the games, perhaps? And this is something of a post-'game over' timeline...

'they've'
I suppose that it was unrealistic to expect that every version of me survived on whatever world they ended up on.
Cool, that's new. I wonder if Oh El will make an attempt to resurrect this bloke. Might be excessively difficult given the presumed lack of a soul, though.
I sigh. Assuming that my memories of Heroes of Might and Magic V and VI are accurate -which given that the backgrounds contradict each other at least one set aren't- Ashan is the creation of the dragon goddess Asha -thus the name- and is otherwise isolated from the multiverse. Extraneous 'in'?

Might they think he's 'just' from space? From reading the link to Ashan it seemed there are other worlds in space in that setting, though the locals may not know about that either.

Maybe the isolation is why they got sent here by - I'm guessing - Boss Smiley? He's going to be doing some evilness, and Oh El is going to be trapped here for a while because it's difficult to get back, preventing his interference.

Back Here

OL was taking some time off work to play in a game of 40k with Zatanna and some folks, and he decided that he'd be 'in character' for the whole thing....as a Demon of Slannesh....complete with accouterments.

There's clapping, but I don't look much like myself at the moment. I based this appearance on the hermaphroditic 4th edition Daemonettes, combined with Mad Donna. I even bit the metaphorical bullet and added in a dozen or so piercings.

Raquel was a little too cheerful about helping with that. My right nipple does not like me at the moment.

Another world/media I'm not familiar with. Wonder if I'll end up checking this one out? Hit rate so far is about 50/50.

If these elves recognise this OL as identical to the other, that means the local one must've had an orange ring. We already know red, yellow and blue don't allow body reformatting as a base function, don't know about the other colours though?

Well...Barring from the Black Ring in the Buffyverse, this is our first alt confirmed dead. Guess we need a term for the Actively Unalive class of Pauls to separate from the more....stationary ones.
Which chapter was this? It's been a while since I've read this fic and digging for specific chapters is kinda a nightmare.

A shitton of what we know about Norse Mythology is from the Elder Edda, its hard to find solid archaeological sources from vikings. More the 'hit it until the red water comes out' types than the 'lets make lasting record for people to find several hundred years later' types.

Runes work decent for short pithy inscriptions and graffiti like "Halfdan was here", but are I'll suited to longer written works. Also, pretty much all of what may have been written by Old Norse/Northern Germanic Pagan would have been lost due to being inscribed on organic material in a cold damp climate and their Christian descendants having very little interest in copying it anywhere but Iceland.

Here is where the Black Ring Buffy shows up...he's Dead due to Vampireness, but that doesn't stop him from getting around.
Part of the multiverse squad that helps against krona and the tuning fork nonsense.
