If I had to justify this, I'd just say that the portal is limited by mass, not area. A train adds a significant amount of mass to the transport, so it's usually better to unload the cargo, send it through in the thinnest packaging you can, then restack.

How portals behave was explained when they were being set up in London. There is no limit, the two locations are contiguous, it's as if space continued at the other location. Throughout is as big as you can make it, but, they do explain the issue, moving the Dolmens gates, once it reaches its location, good are transported fast, but after finishing, they need to move it. There's a limit a of gates created, they are getting them too slowly now, without the large magical production capacity of Atlantis.

Yeah then they should absolutely use trains.

Huh, being such a consistent author if a huge personal safety net. If Zoat did get lost in the woods or something, there would be thousands of people raising the alarm in less than 24 hours.

No, 'had' is correct. She's obviously heard about him now.
No, that's correct.
That would explain why Ian keeps changing his story. First it was a shotgun-related accident, then it was a car accident, then it was shotgun shells in a car? Yeah, c'mon. I can't prove it, but it seems pretty likely that Ian shot himself for typical early teen related reasons, but he doesn't want to admit it so he keeps coming up with different stories.
You have a point, but in this case, no, that was just me. The universe doesn't need two Arsefaces.

Oh god, Zoat said he was away Saturday, but it's now Sunday and he hasn't updated!

Must be dead, no other explanation.
Either that, or he's been abducted by aliens.
Man realised how much work he put in each and every day after taking a single day off, said fuck it, and just walked away.

RIP in peace, it's over FRFR.
Remember, when the new Zoat comes in, just be calm and pretend nothing happened. They usually don't have their impression skills as polished, so we have to give them a pass.

I think about what Toni just said as I look the crowd over.

Hats.

There's a joke there, but I'm working right now so someone else can make it. Aberrance sells hats to the tourists and we're in Nevada, so we usually have a higher than usual hat-to-head ratio. Temperature right now is… Warmish? People are mostly dressed in t-shirts and pants, a couple have light jackets… Hats are… Baseball caps, sun hats… I'm not a hat expert-.

Oh, there it is.

Not hats it's weird to wear here…

"I'm not an expert on hats-."

Toni bites her lip and then looks away.

"Heh, yeah, yeah, funny, but I'm not seeing anything weird. Is it that weird?"

"I was thinking they might be robots again."

"'cause they're wearing hats?"

"Sure, like they're not gunna spend a lot of time on dressing robots. So they just bulk-buy clothes." Huh? "You didn't notice? Those robots we fought had, like, three different outfits."

"Didn't really get a good look." I look around at the hats again. And then at the people wearing them. "I don't think they're robots. Too many different body shapes."

And their facial expressions are… Normal? They look normal to me, anyway.

"Don't suppose your powers give you any kind of mind reading?"

"No. You?"

"No, just temperature control. You wanna call Orange Lantern?"

"Not over hats. There any supervillains who are weird about hats?"

I shrug. "Probably. Can't think of any off-. Right now. You got a smart phone?"

"Yeeeeah, but Dad checks my search history. I don't wanna look up 'supervillains who are weird about hats' in case I get something... Y'know."

No. But, okay. "Okay, well, I got two ideas, then. First one is, we just walk up to someone wearing a hat and talk to them."

"What about?"

"Oh, just make conversation. I've never been to Hub before. You?"

"No. Okay. And then what?"

"If they're totally normal, then I guess we're just in Hat Country. Do a couple more to make sure, then stop worrying."

"Or…"

"You watching the hatties?"

She glances at me, then focuses on a hat-wearing crowd. "Yeah?"

I tilt my back back, and breathe out a plume of fire. Not super-. Plasma, or whatever, just the kind of regular fire I can keep up for… Minutes. I can hear a slight stirring in the crowd, but since it's not pointed at anyone, that should be okay. And stop breathing fire, tilt back to normal…

"Ah, what was that?"

"Did they look around?"

"Huh?"

"Did they look around?"

"Most of 'em did?"

"Okay, which-" I look where she was looking. "-ones didn't, and we'll go talk to one of them."

"Ah… The Hub City Hooligans guy."

Right, blue baseball hat with a… Picture of a homeless guy swinging a trash can lid on it… Local sports team? He's also wearing a light jacket, collar shirt and jeans and sunglasses. Nothing particularly odd looking about him. He's in the line for the worm implant… Doesn't have his phone out and isn't fidgeting much. Can't see any headphones. That's a bit odd. Doesn't look like he's with anyone.

"Right. Follow me."

I walk over to the line. Standard metal barriers keeping everyone in line. You can duck out under it and there's enough space for a family to walk next to each other inside it, but… He's on his own.

"Hey there!"

He stays looking ahead for a moment, and then turns towards me, blinking in surprise. Probably doesn't see many headless guys.

"Hello?"

I give him my best for-the-punters smile. "So what brings you to Hub City?!"

"I'm here to get one of those worm things."

And he turns back towards the front of the line. A bit odd, but it could be that he's just not that social.

"You come far?"

He blinks, and then turns back towards me. "What was that?"

"Did you come far? We didn't get told where the portal's opening to."

"No, it's… It's not far."

"So, where-" He's turned back to the front of the queue again. "-are you from?"

"Um." And back to me again. Yeah, something isn't right here, but… It's a guy in a line. Can't see a gun or a knife. And the genomorphs are giving those things out for free. "What?"

"Where did you come here from?"

"Place near Mount Dora."

P.R. smile and wait… And his attention goes back to the front of the line. I turn and walk away, and Toni follows me.

"That was weird, right?"

"Could be he's just not that talkative. Could be he's autistic, or just has a lot on his mind. Can you knock his hat off without it being obvious?"

"My plasma looks like silver fire. I know some of the Lanterns can make real thin constructs but mine doesn't work like that. Why don't we just ask him to take it off?"

"Because-." Because we don't want to make someone's visit to the park unpleasant. And that doesn't exactly apply here, but this is Orange Lantern's favorite city-. "If he comes from Mount Dora-" Wherever that is. "-then where did he get a local hat?"

"Maybe it's not his first visit? Hey, why don't we just-?"

"Yeah?"

"Get one of those psychic genomorphs to read his mind. There's a bunch of them in the clinic, right?"

Good idea. "Yeah, good idea. You go get one, and I'll keep an eye on him. Make sure he doesn't go anywhere."

She nods and makes a plasma disc for herself. I look around as she flies into the air, and… Yeah, the guy doesn't look around. A couple of others don't either.

What's going on?

The genomorphs just… Stare at me. The little ones with the tentacle arms, the human-sized ones with the big ears and hands, one of the really big ones and the little one on its shoulder.

I know at least some of them can because I remember when Dubbilex took the Oath of Allegiance, but none of these guys look quite like him and I think I remember Dad saying something about not all of them being intelligent?

The big one picks up one of the tentacles ones and puts it down in front of me. It's got a notepad and a pen. Oh, okay. It turns the pad around and points to 'Are you here for an implant?'.

"No no no, there's this guy. Did Orange Lantern tell you I was working security?"

It flicks to another page. 'Yes.'

"Great. Okay, is one of you telepathic?"

'Yes.'

"Good. Can I borrow-?" Ah. "Can one of you come with me? There's a guy acting suspicious outside and we need to find out if he's sketchy or just autistic."

'Yes.'

"Thank-" The big one lumbers closer, then takes hold of the little one on its shoulder and hold it out to m-. No, just puts it on my shoulder and-

**Uuoouurrgh?!**

Huh?

**Unneccesary.** / **No threat.**

The big-hand-.

**G-Elf.**

Ugh, G-Elfs-. Elves? Walk away, and the… G-Troll? Picks up the G-Dwarf and ambles off.

**Issue successfully managed.**

Wait, I'm hearing them.. think..? Huh, that's… Really useful.

**[Pride.]**

I make a disk for us and fly out, heading back to where Face is watching Hat Man. This is…. Weird. I mean, I don't know what I was expecting, exactly. Classroom lessons? One of those is supposed to be happening this Saturday… Or fighting bad guys. But according to Orange Lantern, they don't really want to make us fight anyone serious yet, which, yeah, that makes sense. And there aren't that many fights on our level that the League knows about, because… They'd have dealt with them or got someone else to. So between the equipment, the classes and… Actually getting to know each other, we're just gunna get random stuff like this thrown at us. Which… Okay, if it helps, I guess.

He's probably just on drugs.

**[Confusion. Inability.]**

No, no, I just need you to check his brain. Doing something about it is my problem.

**[Gratitude.]**

People in the line stare as we land. Not hostile or scared, just curious-.

**[Information.]**

Or just looking at the one interesting thing happening around them because that's what humans tend to do. Not Hat Man, though. And not a couple of others…

Okay, G-gnome? That guy. What's up with him?

I feel the G-gnome shift position on my shoulder, and-.

**[The world drops away. There's the path in front of me, and some obstacles that I must be patient with, and at the end, the thing that will solve all my problems. I must wait, and get it, and then return. And then my work will be complete.]**

And then the world snaps back into focus, and…

Fuuuuuuuck. That was not right. Okay, ah, little guy? That guy over there, the one who didn't look when we landed.

**[The world drops away. There's the path in front of me, and some obstacles that I must be patient with, and at the end, the thing that will solve all my problems. I must wait, and get it, and then return. And then my work will be complete.]**

Yeah, that's not autism.

"Face, something's wrong with them."

"Okay." Face steps back up to Hat Man. "Excuse me, sir?"

Hat Man kind of shakes, and turns to face Face. "What was that?"

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna have to ask you to take off your hat."

**[Keep the hat on!]**

"What?" Hat Man leans away from Face. "I'm not taking my hat off!"

Face motions for me to move around, and I duck into the line behind him. The people around him can read the room and back off to give us space.

"I'm sorry to have bothered you sir. Please carry on."

Hat Man blinks… And then returns his attention to the line. I-. I put small plasma pads under my feet and float up -he just ignores me- and then reach forward, grabthebrimandpull!

"My hat!" He twists around and I float back out of arm's reach. My inertia belt should protect me from everything he can do… But Orange Lantern said he died once because the Reach filled a warship that couldn't hurt him with a super-explosive that could, so… "Give it back!" He reaches for it. "Give…" He blinks. "Give… What? Wh-?" He looks around. "Where am I?"

I look at the insides of the hat… Yeah, that's some kind of circuitry. Not touching that, that can go to Hiro.

"Sir?"

"Where am-? Ah!"

Hat Man freezes as he gets a look at Face, which… Yeah, I did that too.

"Yes, I know what I look like, but-" I show him the insides of the hat. "-it looks like you've been mind controlled by your hat. Do you remember anything about that?"

"Ah-. Shit, sorry. Ah. No? I was just… I was in town 'cause I… I wanted to see the portal open…" He shakes his head. "Then it's all a blur. I'm… In Hub City?"

"Yes, and you're in the line for one of those medical worm implants. Did you want to get one?"

"Ah, noo." He steps out of line, and I follow him. "Do you-? Do you need me for anything or can I head home?"

"It would be best if we had someone check you over before you go home, but if you really want to get out of here you can just give us your details and someone will follow up later."

"Right. Yeah, I'll, I'll take the check-up."

Face turns to me. "We should probably find as many of the others as we can. Can the-?"

Five people burst out of line and dash away down the street!

Once the trainees earn more trust, they need to be read up on some previous cases, especially ones where the villain/s involved are still on the loose.

Welcome back, @Mr Zoat. Hope the holiday went well. And another double drop to maintain the average, eh? Now, let's see if our estimates of what's happening with the hats are accurate or not, and how the Face and Argent handle investigating...

I think about what Toni just said as I look the crowd over.

Hats.
I'm guessing he hasn't done any homework yet about current concerns for the League. Or at least heard of the Mad Hatter of Gotham City... It's only the really ambitious freaks of Gotham that get attention elsewhere.

I assume the merchandise hats he's thinking of are often cowboy hats or trucker/baseball caps with Uncorporation branding. Anything more unique would be... Peculiar to imagine.

Oh, there it is.

Not hats it's weird to wear here…
Especially on a sunny day, in a queue out in the open. Going bareheaded is a good way to get a sunburnt face and neck.

"I'm not an expert on hats-."

Toni bites her lip and then looks away.
It doesn't help that you were just joking about helmets a few minutes ago.

"Heh, yeah, yeah, funny, but I'm not seeing anything weird. Is it that weird?"

"I was thinking they might be robots again."
It's not going to be robots again. For one thing, they'd be expecting you to be paranoid about that sort of thing for a while.

"'cause they're wearing hats?"

"Sure, like they're not gunna spend a lot of time on dressing robots. So they just bulk-buy clothes." Huh? "You didn't notice? Those robots we fought had, like, three different outfits."
A lot of that was just playing to League assumptions, I bet. Obvious goons in stuff like hoodies or cap-and-mask combos tend to be a trope for a reason.

"Didn't really get a good look." I look around at the hats again. And then at the people wearing them. "I don't think they're robots. Too many different body shapes."

And their facial expressions are… Normal? They look normal to me, anyway.
Mookbots were very much of a kind, huh? I'm betting some of those expressions are focused on him and Argent.

"Don't suppose your powers give you any kind of mind reading?"

"No. You?"

"No, just temperature control. You wanna call Orange Lantern?"
Yeah, neither of them are really suited to investigations with those powersets. Doesn't stop them doing so, just eliminates a few exotic options.

"Not over hats. There any supervillains who are weird about hats?"

I shrug. "Probably. Can't think of any off-. Right now. You got a smart phone?"
Mad Hatter definitely not well-known outside Gotham, of course.

"Yeeeeah, but Dad checks my search history. I don't wanna look up 'supervillains who are weird about hats' in case I get something... Y'know."

No. But, okay. "Okay, well, I got two ideas, then. First one is, we just walk up to someone wearing a hat and talk to them."
...I mean, I don't doubt it would look odd. Surely she could explain she was checking something for 'work'? Although it would be embarrassing as hell to discuss.

"What about?"

"Oh, just make conversation. I've never been to Hub before. You?"
And more than a few folks would probably relish the idea of meeting a 'superhero', even if they aren't well-known.

"No. Okay. And then what?"

"If they're totally normal, then I guess we're just in Hat Country. Do a couple more to make sure, then stop worrying."

"Or…"
Good move, always checking her options. I'm guessing she's also a little shy about just approaching people. Between her appearance and being, well, a teenager...

"You watching the hatties?"

She glances at me, then focuses on a hat-wearing crowd. "Yeah?"
Face taking the showy route, eh? Fitting, given he's hardly covert.

I mean, A guy can't just relax a little? I'm sure that's what he'd tell anyone who asks about it, anyway. Claim he has to vent heat every once in a while to avoid overheating. 😏

"Did they look around?"

"Huh?"
Ah, testing to see who didn't look at the big, obvious superhero showing off, eh?

"Did they look around?"

"Most of 'em did?"
Because not doing so would be suspicious. Looks like they have a narrower range of targets.

"Okay, which-" I look where she was looking. "-ones didn't, and we'll go talk to one of them."

"Ah… The Hub City Hooligans guy."
Because of course the local sports teams would lean into their city's reputation.

Right, blue baseball hat with a… Picture of a homeless guy swinging a trash can lid on it… Local sports team? He's also wearing a light jacket, collar shirt and jeans and sunglasses. Nothing particularly odd looking about him. He's in the queue for the work implant… Doesn't have his phone out and isn't fidgeting much. Can't see any headphones. That's a bit odd. Doesn't look like he's with anyone.
Oh, that's especially sus. Not fidgeting or doomscrolling while in line?

"Right. Follow me."

I walk over to the line. Standard metal barriers keeping everyone in line. You can duck out under it and there's enough space for a family to walk next to each other inside it, but… He's on his own.
Not out of the ordinary. I doubt folks would arrange to all 'get wormed up' at once for fun.

"Hey there!"

He stays looking ahead for a moment, and then turns towards me, blinking in surprise. Probably doesn't see many headless guys.
Yeah, the usual target of your attention isn't there, that's gonna throw a person's responses off.

"Hello?"

I give him my best for-the-punters smile. "So what brings you to Hub City?!"
These days, it's pretty much working on the construction or shipping, I would expect. Tourism isn't exactly a priority yet.

"I'm here to get one of those worm things."

And he turns back towards the front of the line. A bit odd, but it could be that he's just not that social.
True. Or he's slow to respond because of real-time lag from the remote control. Unless Tetch is in town and in line of sight, there's got to be time needed for him to process a 'perceive-consider-instruction' loop.

"You come far?"

He blinks, and then turns back towards me. "What was that?"
Dude could be high, but every moment is making him seem more suspicious.

"Did you come far? We didn't get told where the portal's opening to."

"No, it's… It's not far."

"So, where-" He's turned back to the front of the queue again. "-are you from?"
Ah, could be their control running on a script making them so slow to react. Especially with that repeated 'ignore the annoyance' thing he's doing.

"Um." And back to me again. Yeah, something isn't right here, but… It's a guy in a line. Can't see a gun or a knife. And the genomorphs are giving those things out for free. "What?"

"Where did you come here from?"
I'm guessing Hatter's Illuminati group are trying to get samples of the organ in order to study it.

"Place near Mount Dora."

P.R. smile and wait… And his attention goes back to the front of the queue. I turn and walk away, and Toni follows me.
A Florida Man, eh. That is a real place, but somehow, I don't think this is as simple as him wanting a detox aid. 😏

"That was weird, right?"

"Could be he's just not that talkative. Could be he's autistic, or just has a lot on his mind. Can you knock his hat off without it being obvious?"
Yes, some reasonable possibilities as to why he's odd, but... In these circumstances, best to be a bit wary.

Ah, good question, Face. Well spotted!

"Maybe it's not his first visit? Hey, why don't we just-?"

"Yeah?"

"Get one of those psychic genomorphs to read his mind. There's a bunch of them in the clinic, right?"
Also a good suggestion. Probably better to try discretion before you go running around hoiking people's hats off.

So most of those people are likely under control. Or they're so jaded about superheroes that a flying silver babe doesn't rate a glance. I think we can guess which is more likely.

A critical mistake by Tetch. If he's not actively controlling them directly, he should at least have had them respond to unusual sights like people normally would. Just a matter of proving beyond reasonable doubt that something's off with them, then.

It is nice to get these rotating perspectives, too. Along with the note of who each perspective is to save time working it out from context...

The genomorphs just… Stare at me. The little ones with the tentacle arms, the human-sized ones with the big ears and hands, one of the really big ones and the little one on its shoulder.

"Ah… Hi?"
More than enough eyes on her to respond quickly to any potential trouble.

Their eyes glow a little, but otherwise they just keep staring. Can they talk? I know at least some of them can because I remember when Dubbilex took the Oath of Allegiance, but none of these guys look quite like him and I think I remember Dad saying something about not all of them being intelligent?

"Can you guys talk?"
If it turns out that's rude to ask of them, she can apologise later. Right now expediency trumps politeness.

The big one picks up one of the tentacles ones and puts it down in front of me. It's got a notepad and a pen. Oh, okay. It turns the pad around and points to 'Are you here for an implant?'.

"No no no, there's this guy. Did Orange Lantern tell you I was working security?"
I'm sure they're aware. OL isn't the sort to spring that on a friendly party under these circumstances.

It flicks to another page. 'Yes.'

"Great. Okay, is one of you telepathic?"
A tablet with keyboard might be an option to look into, especially with text-to-speech. But there's probably all sorts of other issues. Working out if their tentacles can be picked up by touch-screens, for instance. 😏

'Yes.'

"Good. Can I borrow-?" Ah. "Can one of you come with me? There's a guy acting suspicious outside and we need to find out if he's sketchy or just autistic."
And whether there's anyone else like him, just to be careful... But that's for later.

'Yes.'

"Thank-" The big one lumbers closer, then takes hold of the little one on its shoulder and hold it out to m-. No, just puts it on my shoulder and-

**Uuoouurrgh?!**

People in the line stare as we land. Not hostile or scared, just curious-.
I'm not surprised, what with them seeing her fly off then come back with another weird creature.

**[Information.]**

Or just looking at the one interesting thing happening around them because that's what humans tend to do. Not Hat Man, though. And not a couple of others…
And there's your targets, little guy.

Okay, G-gnome? That guy. What's up with him?

I feel the G-gnome shift position on my shoulder, and-.
And here we go...

**[The world drops away. There's the path in front of me, and some obstacles that I must be patient with, and at the end, the thing that will solve all my problems. I must wait, and get it, and then return. And then my work will be complete.]**

And then the world snaps back into focus, and…
I hope he meant to drag her along with him, or that might be worrying.

Identical thought pattern to the first guy? No way is that anything but mind-control. And it's pretty clear Tetch gave them a simple program to follow, so he may not paying direct attention.

Yeah, that's not autism.

"Face, something's wrong with them."
...Might have wanted to keep that a little more private, Argent.

"Okay." Face steps back up to Hat Man. "Excuse me, sir?"

Hat Man kind of shakes, and turns to face Face. "What was that?"
Ah, the telepathic contact shaking the control slightly, I bet. But not enough to break it.

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna have to ask you to take off your hat."

**[Keep the hat on!]**
Even panic conditions for the mind control. Wonder if he was gonna get asked to remove the hat for the implantation procedure or if they'd let him keep it on? 🤔

"What?" Hat Man leans away from Face. "I'm not taking my hat off!"

Face motions for me to move around, and I duck into the line behind him. The people around him can read the room and back off to give us space.
...While the other hat guys are probably taking note now.

"I'm sorry to have bothered you sir. Please carry on."

Hat Man blinks… And then returns his attention to the line. I-. I put small plasma pads under my feet and float up -he just ignores me- and then reach forward, grabthebrimandpull!
Clever. Exploit that programmed indifference to catch him off guard.

Oh, sure, OL told them about that. Presumably as a lesson about assuming you're utterly invulnerable because of a single good defence.

I look at the insides of the hat… Yeah, that's some kind of circuitry. Not touching that, that can go to Hiro.

"Sir?"
Tetch tech all but confirmed. So getting the rest of those hats off the unresponsive guys just became a priority.

"Where am-? Ah!"

Hat Man freezes as he gets a look at Face, which… Yeah, I did that too.
I suspect she'd elicit a similarly shocked reaction, but less fear. She's much nicer on the eyes and all, you know?

"Yes, I know what I look like, but-" I show him the insides of the hat. "-it looks like you've been mind controlled by your hat. Do you remember anything about that?"

"Ah-. Shit, sorry. Ah. No? I was just… I was in town 'cause I… I wanted to see the portal open…" He shakes his head. "Then it's all a blur. I'm… In Hub City?"
So he got hatted in that crowd? I'm sure OL or someone can grab any surveillance records, see if it was Tetch who be-chapeau'd him.

"Yes, and you're in the line for one of those medical worm implants. Did you want to get one?"

"Ah, noo." He steps out of line, and I follow him. "Do you-? Do you need me for anything or can I head home?"
Ah, let's put a pin in that for a second, you're not the only victim here...

"It would be best if we had someone check you over before you go home, but if you really want to get out of here you can just give us your details and someone will follow up later."

"Right. Yeah, I'll, I'll take the check-up."
What with the mind-control and all. Make sure there's no lingering effects from it or the sudden cessation of it.

Face turns to me. "We should probably find as many of the others as we can. Can the-?"

Five people burst out of line and dash away down the street!
Let's hope they're dumb and all ran in the same direction...

And the chase begins! If they're quick, the rookies might catch two of the hat guys. It's a pity none of them will be able to offer any insight into what Tech was planning here, since they're just patsies. My guess is that the 'Illuminati' are suspicious of the health symbiont, and they wanted samples to study... Somehow? Why they're suspicious of them, I have no idea. Paranoia, most likely.😏

So what are the odds that is isn't The Mad Hatter? Not like he has a monopoly on mind-control tech. Or headwear.
I'd say the chances of this not being him are low.

Yeah, there are others that have mind control tech, but they don't tend to put them into hats.

Plus, this does seem like something Tetch, Question and Anarky would do.

They are opposed to the League doing what it's doing, and they may thing that the implant genomorphs are a way to control people.

The brain, bone and flesh regrow, then the hair all over its body sticks straight out as if it had a huge static charge. It awkwardly clambers to its feet, but a misjudged pull causes it to float upwards into the air. Streaky itself doesn't seem unduly bothered by that and lets it legs just droop as it looks down on us.

Loved this Paulternate, was rereading it. Looking forward to seeing more of his story.

I enjoyed the Jade and Hades chapters. Nice look at those characters. Bringing Jade to Earth was a good idea, these interactions with her make me see her as more than just 'the person cockblocking the other love interests'.

I thought Hades knew he'd lost memories, just not what of exactly, since I thought he lost all his memories since before Persephone rather than just the ones relating to their relationship. I thought he had to be reeducated about the modern world.
"A chance to rejoin civilisation. Access to trade all down the pacific coast. Work, because I assure you there will be legitimate work while our friends and allies secure the region. And -not least- you avoid being obliterated."
'Pacific'
Zatanna shrugs. "I like the idea of Batman running America better than the idea of Horne or Knight doing it. I know how China treated it's metahumans until they lost control of their Gobi Desert prison, and I know how corrupt the Russian government is. So if Batman's taking over the world, I think that's a good thing."
'its'
Zatanna slaps me across the chest. Then she winces and rubs her now bruised hand because I'm wearing armour.

"Paul-. Paul seems to think that the Justice League is taking over the world."

"I am not allowed to talk about-."

"Shut up."

She glares at me and I raise my hands in surrender.
Zatanna is pretty feisty in this meeting.
"Ah, not really. Ah. Washington State? Things are a mess, but the.. alliance of resurrected states would be a lot happier if someone of proven ability to oversee the transition back to civilisation."
'with'?
"My boy, Doctor von Schadel is an illusion. My true self?" His scarf twitches aside as his head leaps from his shoulders and lands on the platform. "I am Cranius!" Match actually recoils. Ixy's eyes widen slightly and Mister Tawny looks thoroughly bewildered. "This is my assistant Otto." The headless body waves at us. "Otto as in 'Ottoman'. Otto man?" We don't react. "Egh."
Broken link.

These guys have no taste.

I remembered liking The Face's wacky appearance, and the Un-Men in general, but I'd completely forgotten how much of a dickhead he was. I can scarcely imagine how Oh El's meeting was worse.
"To be honest, I wasn't the one who did the assessments. I thought I'd give this a go, and if you were still the same blemmyae you were last time we met you'd wash out soon enough."
'blemmya'? Or something anyway, since I think blemmyae is plural.
He nods from the waist. "Thanks. And I do wanna do it-. What will it actually involve?"
'And if'?
"Yeah, because everyone else was. I wanted to fit in. But you think about things when your body's fallen apart for a second time and you've got no eyes or ears or nose or tongue again, and you've got no idea if anything's going to be able to fix it or you're just stuck like that."
I initially assumed it was the Anti-Life that changed his personality. I suppose not.
I watch from a mile up as Antonia Monetti in turn watches a… A group of people right on the border between 'protest group' and 'mob', as they protest outside of a building being used for… Uh, some sort of political working dinner. The generally ineffectualness of the American government hasn't exactly escaped the general public. 'DO YOUR JOBS' is just about the most polite sign down there. She's not really doing much, just standing there with a couple of D.C. police officers while the group kindly consents to not charge the front doors just behind them.
'general'
I prepare to dive, but Miss Monetti had already spotted it. She steps up and raises her hands, a glowing mass of blue-silver plasma extruding itself from her bare skin and forming a circular barrier just in time to catch the projectile. The police cringe back as the bottle shatters, burning fuel spilling across the plasma construct as it flickers and flares. It's not weak, the impact isn't threatening its integrity, her ability just doesn't seem to lend itself to tight containment fields.
'has'?
"I suggest you stop talking until you speak to a lawyer, sir." I use the construct chains to pull his hands behind is back and hold his wrists into a convenient handcuffing position, and nod politely to Miss Monetti when she stares at me as the officer handcuffs him.
'his'
"As opposed to what, eat it all myself?" She frowns slightly. "I don't even like fruit cake. I find the texture gradient weird."
Same.
"Everyone sucks to start with. In my first week I flew into a cliff as supersonic speed." She perks up slightly. "With Wonder Woman just behind me and watching the whole thing. Kid Flash broke his nose trying to vibrate through a wall. Aquaman used to occasionally start whispering because he'd gotten used to how sound travels under water. You're not going to be perfect, and no one expects you to be. And… You're not signing up for life. If it doesn't work for you, just quit."
'underwater'?
"Okay. Okay, I-. Yeah." She closes the not particularly thick folder. "I got hit by the same depression wave as everyone else. And then.. this happened." She exhales sharply. "And yaknow what? It fixed my brain first. I was completely clear-headed when my skin was changing. I had like half a second of 'it's gone?', and then I was on fire."
Her powers make her resistant to Anti-Life? That's pretty good.
Ah. "Yes, that's why Argonate was refused a licence. He was the first and only person on the trial to have a negative affect like that."
'effect'
"Because it's highly effective at inducing regeneration in patients with otherwise irreparably injuries. The man you saw was a one-lunged paraplegic before he volunteered for the human trials. He was originally going to testify as to how successful the trial was."
'irreparable'

And let's be real, if we hadn't been along for all of OL's wild ride we'd be just as suspicious of the weird guy handing out alien slugs that'll cure all your ills as we were of Yellow Batman.

"Would you like to join the Sharing, friend?"

I'm building theory out of a single example here, but this may be the work of a white-hat (ha!) mind hacker, in the sense that the perp thinks they are doing a good deed in forcing people who wouldn't have otherwise gotten the genomorph implant to receive one.

Based on the implanted compulsion, there doesn't seem to be some underlying plot or motivation. And if there was, these implants as common enough by now that it would've been much simpler for the controller to abduct people who already had one. Rather, I get the sense that is someone trying to 'do their part' by forcibly uplifting the obstinate. Making the victims scatter at the end could've just been a panic play.

Yep.

Heck, Paul is fighting an alien empire that routinely does these types of thing.

I think it's just Anarky, Tetch and Question trying to figure out how the genomorphs work.

They probably think that the implants are used to control people, so they want to get their hands on them in order to study them.

The reason they didn't just abduct some random person and removed their implant could be because they're worried it has some self destruct method.
