Video Games General

Replaying Stellar Blade and messing around with the DLCs (they weren't a thing back when I first played the game), the Nikke one already makes the game infinitely better because dog. You can indeed pet the good boy which makes the DLC a 10/10. The minigames are alright, showing that I ain't missing anything by not having played Nikke at all.
I'd... contest that honestly.

Nikke's writing is miles better than Stellar Blade. It's one area that honestly disappointed me. Because I do know they are better storytellers then that.

I do give em a slight pass for it being their first attempt at a mainstream game. I think I even saw a tweet that said they were trying to play it safe with Stellar Blade.

But all bets are off with the sequel. And to be honest, I'm not in the mood to give a lot of grace this time because of the AI thing they pulled.

I haven't dismissed the game... but it's off the pre-order list.

I'm not talking about writing, I am talking about gameplay. The minigame the DLC added is as far as I understand a port of the Nikke gameplay, and it was not something I care much about. I've enjoyed the stories of a number of gacha games I've played, its the gameplay I usually can't stand for prolonged periods of time.

Oh! Fair enough. I'd agree on that one.

So with Blood of Dawnwalker having a secret ending if you by some act of God defeat the obligatory prologue boss that is meant to kick your ass, we've got what? 2 games that have bonus endings if you do that? Its Dawnwalker and DMC5 that I can think of.

Been replaying Aliens: Dark Descent recently.

Good Lord is that game just fucking perfect in every way. Easily in my top 10 Best Games of all time list.

Is there any VN game in which you are a male player or female that are trying to save a novel's villainess?

Right, forgot it's also a little buggy as well.

I also played while drinking yesterday, so I got bit hammered by the time I went asleep. I woke up today and started playing, and somehow I was already halfway through a mission without any recollection on how I got there. Last thing I remember was being halfway through a mission before that.

That is strangely thematically consistent with how you would expect an AVP fireteam to end up. Central getting drunk, sending them into hell, losing contact, then coms get rerouted to a group that's not drunk. And yet somehow someway even while drunk they're giving orders that work just as well while sober.

Lol, it checks out.

I spent half an hour trying to trigger a quest about collecting alien samples because I forgot I apparently did that quest already. My poor schmucks were running around an alien-infested facility looking for samples that just weren't there.

Also there was someone wanting a Driving Game some time ago? Here's a new one from my Calendar:

This looks like exactly what I was looking for back then! Definitely wishlisted. I'll definitely buy- in hopes that they'll get the rainy setting working. I love driving in the rain... a soft rain, not that shit we had the other week that knocked out half the power in the city.

I do want to make a joke about Europeans driving on the wrong side of the road though :p

Personal note/review: The Knights of Fiona.

For some reason, I was under the impression that RUINSMAGUS and this game were by the same people that did The Tale of Onogoro... I was mistaken, and that explains a lot.

RUINSMAGUS was a gameplay loop and only a gameplay loop that maybe dangled some story at you, and it was a boring enough gameplay loop that I dropped it before it could give me any.

The Knights of Fiona... has a bit more story, and it's a lot prettier, but... it's a real disappointment. I'd have kept it installed and tried to keep going, maybe even buy the game (it lists as Free but you only get chapter 1 while the rest is packed in a DLC, which is weird but okay...) if it weren't for just how bad the gameplay is.

I've played several VR games with swordfighting, bows, and shields and such... and this is pathetic. Even aside from having to squeeze the Index controllers hard enough to hurt my hands after a few seconds. It's all flailing, the missions are immediate combat and I still never figured out how to switch to the bow. Each weapon has two cooldown-bearing special attacks, but without a 'training room' to experiment with them you're pretty much flailing around trying to figure them out in the middle of combat. You can parry with a shield, but the attacks come so fast and from so many directions that your best bet is still flailing. Instead of putting your sword at your hip, that's where the camera is, so if you hands aren't high enough when you grip your weapon you get the camera instead, and if you stop squeezing you lose your weapon and might grab it accidentally anyway.

The story was okay so far, if basic, but game start so. But according to the reviews it's just boring and long-winded as it goes on.

On top of that, the ultimate sin (IMO...) it's built for Multiplayer First. Every mission you join a lobby, even the tutorial missions that don't allow more than one player. Loading screens abound, and you can't even re-do a mission for more stars without going back to the mission select area, waiting the three seconds for the reward screen to show up and five for it to list out its stuff, heading over to the mission board, navigating to the mission, clicking 'more details' because the Accept Quest button is behind it instead of right out front, the you get the 'waiting for players to join' window floating there, and have to click the right stick, push the indicator up on the radial, pull the trigger to select it, in order to bring up another window to click 'ready' on.

At least I haven't paid for it.

I can't believe I confused myself into thinking this was the same studio as The Tale of Onogoro, which is a masterpiece in comparison. Still pretty basic and at this point it's getting old, but the puzzles were good, the story was fantastic, and the main character was actually interesting.

That's a old(-ish) trick to make a purely digital game appear free while actually being full price: put up the game for "free", but make it so after a small chunk of content, the game will pop up a dialog saying that the free portion is over, if you want more you'll have to pay for the rest.

I saw it a bunch on iOS games years ago (Capcom loved it for Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick), and technically every 360-era XBLA game counts (since all 360-era XBLA games double as their own demo if you don't have the license for the full version) but Space Invaders Infinity Gene explicitly used the "base game is free but extremely limited, more is DLC" trick on at least one platform. And I'm certain there are more examples I don't know of... and can't think of right now, either.

I haven't seen it used on new releases in something like a decade or so at this point, which kinda makes sense: building a game like that makes it easy to datamine and dissect if you make the "DLC" a simple unlock key (which, a sub-MB file is much quicker to download than any significant amount of game assets), which a cut-down demo version wouldn't be as vulnerable to. The limited demo version would also likely be smaller in terms of file size, not that any devs really care about that nowadays...

Plus, there was one time I could swear that the demo of a game I was playing on Steam glitched and let me play the full game, past what should have been the end of the demo... which makes me think that the devs took the full game, and put up a progress barrier early on that failed to trigger for me (me using Cheat Engine to cheat some resource counts might also have been related).

It's called "shareware" and has been a thing since before Doom released. In 1994.

The difference between the 80s and now is that shareware was used by indie developers (ex. Spiderweb, id, even Epic when they were just starting) to pay the bills while building a userbase. The intent drastically changes when a major studio does it instead.

Metroid Ravenous finally got announced.

Samus can eat people now. :V

The fact that Samus is a Metroid now will never not be funny. Also... neat.

I like that even though Samus lost she wasn't jobbing. Looks to me like she was fighting like a beast but these new baddies are bad fucking news.

Also... are they going to have another go at having Samus talk? I'm... okay with that. Other M was a misstep (though I heard a big problem was the localization, heard there was a mod that fixed it though)

This Samus sounds tough enough to eat a bowl of nails for breakfast and ask for seconds...

Without any milk.

Ye. It does raise the question of what even is her biology at this point cuz that heart stab seemed to just piss her off.

Much less going by Samus' monologue, if one of the Ronin (not official, I'm just calling them that from the hats and use of energy swords) calls her a monster to her face, I can see Samus just calmly saying "You've noticed..."

Yeah... like her dna must be... insane at this point.

It took 5 guys with weirdly advanced tech and who at the very least looked damn skilled to bring Samus down. Maybe they have some connection to Raven?

Still they pissed her off to the point she's busting out the Metroid powers. If they destroyed the Adam AI?

Yeah, those 5 are dead men walking.

I'd be amazed if the planet made it through....

You ever think that the Federation has 'Samus' insurance?

My money's on bounty hunters that managed to reverse-engineer Chozo tech. That's what it looks like, anyway, and there was a Chozo statue she was fighting in there too.

Feds put a bounty on her, Ravenbeak was paying them and they're mad bro, or they want her suit to steal it too. Or a combination of all three.
