Only 1.5 billion credits? Man Myto was an effective tax dumpster fire with those numbers. That's around 7.5 million credits brought in on average for each of the 200ish worlds in the sector.

With most worlds contributing significantly less than that average with large outliers like Minda and Dubrillion system. Hopefully the Guild can pump the numbers up by improving the economy and Las' reforms can collect taxes more efficiently.

Remember what Las said at the beginning? All the smooth brainers use slaves, meaning it impacts both you taxable base and the wider economy as a whole. I'm sure those slave using companies know how to effectively funnel the money through tax avoidance schemes and when combined with bribes, they probably pay negligible taxes.

Colonel Vem made sure the command boomed like a mortar. Verbally whipping his charges another lap around the base's crop fields. He had been employed to whip these "Dfertinin Cantonists" into shape and by the almighty Credit he was going to do just that!

"DO YOU THINK JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE CARRYING THOSE WALKING STICKS THIS IS A LEISURELY HIKE!? EVERY STEP TAKEN QUICKER IS ANOTHER LIFE PROTECTED! SO GET PROTECTING!"

What Colonel Vem had found when he landed was a bunch of illiterate farmers. Apparently the Crown had just abolished serfdom on Dfertini in an attempt to modernize and meet the requirements to join the Guild. They definitely needed the outside help. Why most of the people on this world still used livestock as currency, the savages.

"YOU MUST THINK YOU ARE HOT FECES GIVEN YOU WERE WALLOWING IN MANURE BEFORE COMING HERE! BUT ANIMALS DON'T FIRE BACK WHEN YOU ARE HUNTING IN THE WOODS!"

All those farmers being able to move from the land they were previously bound to came in just in time with the sector becoming more dangerous. Plenty of available antsy recruits looking for an excuse to leave the farm. The rise in pirate raids caused the agriworld's government to start mustering new formations to bolster the world's PDF.

"TURN! FACE! NOW GET TO THOSE POSTS FOR FIRING DRILL 23A! I WANT SHOTS SO PRECISE IT BORES THROUGH THEM!"

Luckily these fools were not completely without hope. Their leaders had the sense to stock the armories of the Cantonists with RG-4Ds. Good model and easy to hold in two hands, although most were a bit worn. Luckily they also had the illustrious Colonel Vem to show them the ropes and instill them with elan!

Sadly Colonel Vem's first attempt to embolden them by brightening up their uniforms from those drab fatigues went poorly. The Cantonists strongly resisted the idea, citing fears of some long outdated sumptuary law. Too afraid of being subjected to the lashes their forefathers had to endure for breaking some superfluous dress code in their culture.

"NOW USE YOUR SCOPES! YOU LOT HAVE BEEN GIVEN THEM FOR A REASON! EYEBALLING IT CAN ONLY TAKE YOU SO FAR!"

This first failure did nothing to discourage Colonel Vem. It may have been a few decades since Colonel Vem's time in the Corps. However he had never lost his edge, that's for certain. He is just as spry and ready for action as when he was commissioned.

"LEFT FLANK YOUR AIM IS ATROCIOUS! MY LANCERS HAD BETTER AIM AND THEY WERE MELEE TROOPS! IF I DIDN'T THINK YOU WERE DESTITUTE I WOULD DOCK YOU A HEIFER!"

Oh what Colonel Vem wouldn't give be ride with his lancers again. His peers were always too scared to utilize them correctly. You do not command a speeder bike charge from the rear. You do it from the spear tip screaming as you shove your power lance into the heart of the enemy! Even that Durge fellow understood this simple truth.

"Hey Vep. Just finished putting my company through its paces. Good enough to use 'em for garrison duty, running convoys, or as a screening force. Still wouldn't trust them to hold a line in a field battle let alone participate in an attack if it can be helped. Yours holding up well?"

Sure Colonel Vem's methods led to his legs getting blown off charging into a pirate band. And sure his injuries caused his superiors to force him to sit out the Clone Wars. However, that still does not disprove that aggression is key in warfare. Oh if only he had his legs back then. He would have mowed down those bio droids by the hundred with his lads.

"Ah Books! Colonel Vem would kick them in the rears if they weren't so delicate. One swing of metal and they would start whining that their bones are broken."

Still, Colonel Vem would not let a little something like lost limbs keep him from the military. He called in all the favors with his Iotran mates for training manuals along with after action reports during the war. If he was not allowed to get stuck in anymore, then he would teach the future soldiers how to make their enemy bleed. A way to secure his legacy beyond just the traditional means.

"I know you got your methods, but these guys aren't like your droids or my brothers. That law on rural fire safety and blaster gas storage means most of them haven't held a blaster before becoming a Cantonist. Maybe it would be best to ease up a bit?"

Yet despite Colonel Vem excelling in his self education, his superiors on Muunilinst refused to reinstate him even with the thousands of messages he sent over the years. His ties to a formation that sided with the Separatists had left him blacklisted from military appointments. Leaving his vast experience and comprehensive knowledge unused.

"Nonsense! Colonel Vem has spent decades learning how to whip children into fighting troops! Colonel Vem did not languish this long just to not put them into practice."

Colonel Vem's salvation came during his 28th granddaughter's birth when his 6th daughter brought him word of a new commercial venture in a nearby sector. This new fangled Guild was opening its doors to all who could do useful work, with little care for their background. It was a sign from the almighty Credit that his time had come.

"As long as our employers aren't complaining, I guess it's fine. You're the main shareholder of the business after all."

Colonel Vem immediately used his savings to found the League of Proper Drillers and began gathering like minded individuals. Those unable to take the field, but still wishing to pass on their lessons to the next generation. He found himself working alongside men he would have shot earlier in his life, but were now brought together in purpose.

"Now do not go calling Colonel Vem boss! We are all in this together! United in our purpose of becoming the forebears of a new doctrine of warfare!"

Colonel Vem's fellow Drillers were like a second family to him. People who saw the direction the sector and the galaxy at large was heading and sought to equip the next generation as best they could. Sworn to see every conscript, farmer, and reservist given the skills to fend off pirates and raiders who would prey on their loved ones.

"Vep you are speaking in the third person again. Did I catch you another one of your inspirational internal monologues?"

Now his League was spreading across the stars. Instilling wisdom and discipline into the defenders of civilization. Ready to throw themselves into the conflagration of battle as stalwart guardians against those that would pillage and ravage their homes.

"You know it Books! Proper self motivation must be maintained when partaking in any endeavor! Speaking of which. ARE YOU PLANNING TO BLOW THROUGH YOUR ENTIRE STOCK OF TIBANNA?! COLUMN FORMATION ON THE DOUBLE!"

That is right Colonel Vem! You are going to bring these slackers up to snuff! They are going to kick some barbarian band butt and show everyone your methods work! Those fools on Muunilinst are going to send apologies by the dozens once they realize they were wrong! Colonel Vem has got this!

"Colonel" Vep Vem is a play on those officers who hold onto their commission far beyond their best by date. Still makes him one of the most experienced military personnel on the planet. PDFs are often beggars, not choosers. Fun fact: American Major General Hains served in both the US Civil War and WW1. Having around 50 years in service total.

At least now these systems have the Guild and the ability to post Consultant contracts. With the incoming Moff spreading the Guild's services, even destitute, backwards, non-fantastical worlds like Dfertini can buy some level of military training to prepare for the ongoing pirate push into the sector. Not every mercenary contract has to involve going into battle after all.

Information. One of the greatest, most powerful assets anyone can have is information.

One what? Anything. Everything. Even the smallest piece of information can bring the largest payday.

At least, that's how Dornun talks about information. And despite my annoyance with the man, I have a hard time disagreeing with his attitude.

Especially when his information turns up the most interesting bits and bobs.

For example, the Mindan Shipyards. Sometimes shortened to the uncreative name of The Mard by the workers, has twenty total berths. When it was first acquired, there were barely enough workers to man two. Now, with an influx of applicants, that number has shot up to nearly twelve, with the rest in the process of being filled. All in all, the backlog was being worked through faster than ever, with close to 50 ships being built every month.

Now, this wasn't what Dornun told me, no. He did, however, inform me of the identities of a few managers aboard the yards. Nobody super high up, mostly middle managers, who just so happened to have hidden bank accounts. That got regular payments.

Now, those payments couldn't be fully traced, at least not yet. Dornun's net wasn't wide enough yet, and both Darna and Thorne were still busy reorganizing and training up the HAVEN network, so they weren't in a position to help.

But, there were some clues. These managers, every now and again sent out encrypted messages. After copying one, it ended up being a report of sorts. It covered production numbers, the 'Union', and more. But none of it pointed towards criminal activity or any plans for attack.

It pointed towards someone keeping an eye on their investment. Hiral.

At first, it scared me a bit. But then I calmed down and thought about it rationally. The shipyard was a big investment, of course he wanted his own people on the inside to keep tabs. Just in case I wasn't on the up and up with him.

For now, surveillance would be maintained but the managers wouldn't be interfered with. Sure, they likely won't be promoted any time soon, or ever, but firing them now would simply bring suspicion upon me. Maybe if one of them actually fucks up, sure, but unless that happens its simply not worth it.

The other interesting bit of information Dornun got me was about a certain group of systems in the sector.

See, the Guild had grown from a one system operation to a 60 system giant. And with each passing month, more and more systems joined. At this rate, the entire sector would be Guild space in a year!

This estimate, of course, assumes that every system qualifies for Guild membership. But the fact remains that many don't.

Of these systems, about 12 or so, located in the northwestern side of the sector along the Veragi route had decided to create their own little coalition. Officially, there was no alliance.

Unofficially, the slavers were scared of the Guild and decided to huddle up in their little corner.

Just a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have cared what they were up to. So long as they didn't come for me, I was chill.

However, I no longer have that privilege. I have been cursed by the Force to take up a position with exponentially more responsibility and danger, and as such must properly address this little coalition.

My best bet is to simply inflame their inner conflicts. All 12 systems are slave economies in one form or another, and they all compete for incoming slave shipments, contracts and more.

Once the HAVEN network is up and running, that'll be the first place they go to take a look.

Is this little coalition actually dangerous to me, once I become Moff? Not really, no. But I'll have a million other internal and external concerns, which might allow them to spread and cause me problems later on.

And that's what's truly unacceptable. My current escape plans have been pushed back to the fall of the Empire, which means I need to make it to 4 ABY, maybe a little after it if need be, and there can be no unstable elements threatening my survival until I get out.

At this point, I have to assume that mummy dearest isn't coming along, which would be nice if not for the fact that I have another 3-4 years of the bullshit coming down the line.

Now I look towards the other reports. The first is that of the deal I made with various security companies. It had expanded to near Guild wide as the rebellion retreated further and further.

Though it was odd. See, four months ago when I made those deals, I expected it to take somewhere south of ten months. But to see the Rebellion in full fledged retreat as early as this? It was odd.

Ultimately, however, it mattered little to me. After all, the people were profiting, the Guild was profiting, and I got to live another day.

The Admiral stared at the starmap before him as if it would grant him answers.

As always, it did not.

The map was divided by sectors, and colored by region of control. Red for Imperial, green for third parties, and blue for the Alliance.

And at that moment, it was distressingly red. Off to the side, a small counter sat, ticking up with each new report. The casualty counter.

From deep within his chest he heaved a great sigh. Thankfully, he was ensconced within his quarters, for he would never have shown such a sight to his subordinates. It was imperative that he maintain decorum and bravery for the troops.

Such was the burden of leadership.

To his right his PDA beeped on its stand, an alert coming through about further Rebel retreats. Reading through it quickly, he connected his PDA to the star map via wire, uploading the relevant map data and watching the starmap update to accommodate the new information.

The little machine was a blessing of sorts, even if Imperial in nature. They were cheap, effective, and had allowed the Rebellion to, for once in its existence, come close to properly categorizing its goods.

The decentralized nature of insurrection meant information was oftentimes fragmented, improperly stored (if at all) or simply outdated. While the PDA's didn't solve every problem, the little tablets did allow the Rebellion to far more properly understand its own fragmented logistics.

And those logistics told a very telling tale. The Offensive would not succeed.

While initial reports had shown success, as the attacks continued, the logistics told the truth of the matter.

Casualties were mounting, weapons and ships were being damaged and destroyed, and supply lines were being stretched thin. The entire Alliance was being stretched thin. The Rebellion was in no position to compete with the Empire, because if there was one thing the oppressors did well, it was build a military industrial complex.

Now, this was known to Ackbar before the offensive itself, but he had been outvoted by the more zealous amongst High Command. Even in the highest echelons of the Rebellion, some were still too consumed by their hatred of the Empire to see the bigger picture.

Looking over the now updated star map, he made his conclusion.

Based on the Empire's movement patterns, they had little time before the Mako-Ta spacedocks were revealed. While the retreat was going well, and would save the Rebellion plenty of ships and manpower, it also meant the Imperials were zealous in following every lead they could find.

With the conclusion made, he started sending orders to consolidate their ships and prepare for a departure soon. They would have to prepare a force to stall the Empire upon their arrival at the docks, in order to give the Empire the impression that the fleet was smaller than they believed, but it would allow the greater force to escape.

The docks themselves would likely have to be left behind, but the computers were to be scrambled and all sensitive equipment salvaged. If they had time, Gial would've preferred to booby trap the docks, rig them to blow as soon as the Imperials laid their hands on it, but that was outside of the timeframe.

Allowing another sigh to wrack his body, Gial stared up at the ceiling. This wasn't what he imagined he would be doing with his life in the slightest. A military man, sure. But a prominent leader of a galaxy wide rebellion? Inconceivable.

Yet, whenever he closed his eyes, he was reminded of the list he kept in his desk drawer. It was long, dense, and took up the entire drawer.

It contained the names of every rebel who died under his command. Of every brave soul who, on his orders, sacrificed everything to push the cause forward.

Above all else, he owed this to their sacrifice. After all, what is the burden of leadership in comparison to the sacrifice of the innocent?

Standing from his desk, he straightened his uniform. Taking one last glance at the drawer, he grabbed his PDA and stepped out the door.

Their deaths would not be in vain.

I know that one of the major advantages of the rebellion was that they threw stuff at the wall to see what stuck (hence explaining why they may have adapted the PDAs) but i sincerely hope the empire at large does so too (especially the imperial revenue service) since then there'd way less comically evil imperials for the rebels to fight and the "was the empire really that bad" question would be more ambiguous (making the job easier for Las) with all the babycrushing factory builders being worked in the mines since they commited a lot of tax evasion to build those (i'll ignore how the system of galactic governance itself was designed to feed palps the galaxy's negative emotions to make this take of mine work)

Our MC continues to delude himself that he will eventually escape, the Force probably busting a gut everytime he thinks about escaping.

So that is basically two small fleets every month. Sure they won't contain Star Destroyers, but that is impressive if he can keep it up post-Endor.

Heck at that rate that would be over 80 ships a month from a fully crewed Mard plus whatever gets produced on Minda-2A by the Sharks. 4 newly built Outer Rim fleets of ships a month in a post-Endor galaxy is a lot of ships and influence.

Gives "officially there is no Union" vibes. Yeah these governors are probably going to get a lot of Mandalmotors shipments in the future.

Well that's a comparatively big win for the Rebellion. Being able to get more Mon Cala cruisers out from the Mako-Ta disaster will do wonders for the backbone of the Rebel Fleet.

I will say...

You know that George Washington, leading colonial militias accidently kickstarted the 7 years war right?

The war that bankrupted england and france (causing one to raise tea taxes, and the other to destabilise enough, so that sending aid to the americans, caused a revolution)

That guy stayed the leader of militia in a no name frontier colony right?
