A lot pre-quirk media survived the quirkpocalypse than you'd expect. I'm pretty sure class 1B makes a bunch of Harry Potter jokes at one point.

Since it's so close instead of correct, that probably means one of the parts is off. He's definitely from an alt reality, since both he and his brother died and didn't have quirks. While he could be alt reality All for One (they are identical twins after all) it would be pretty weird with Toji's characterization, All for One recognizing him as Yoichi, and the tags for both of them. So i'm guessing the incorrect part is him being American, mostly due to a line from the first chapter:

Since they tracked his dad TO the states, it implies he was born elsewhere. It's possible he was born in Japan in his first life too, and the paleness in mha was a change caused by quirk nonsense. He said it was a color palette swap, so his features may be otherwise identical.
