Video Games General

Hey, quick question: the purpose of a 4X game like Endless Space is to expand your territory by colonizing as many planets as possible, right? I'm supposed to grab as many systems as I can, yes? Why is my population so mad about that?

I've never played it so I can only speak in generalities but in at least one game I've seen in the genre they made starting new cities/colonizing new planets reduce overall happiness as a balancing tool so people couldn't just mass expand early and get a comical lead and had to actually build happiness buildings. In other words a way to slow the game down. Also so it'd be more of a decision on whether to grab marginal worlds/cities or not.

Not just colonize "as many systems as you can" but also adequately build them up, otherwise you are overextending yourself.

You can get more territory later on, once you are firmly established and get to wage some war against your neighbors. The map-painting happens gradually, not immediately.

Remember, the 4X are "Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate".

^This, you need to build things and defenses or the pop gets pretty angry, and even then they start getting very snippy when you get too far from your capital, you need to put leaders so they can get less uppity.

Is designed that way to avoid map painting ( not that you stop doing that, in any case ).

So I've been playing Chronicles of the Wolf. Castlevania homage/knockoff, pulling a lot from SotN as usual.

It's clunky at first, but as you get more movement and weapon options that clears up. Some of the bosses wind up being pure slugfests (looking at you, Next Generation) but most of them only require skill. One of the bosses is money-gated which is bullshit, but once you actually get access to the endgame castle you make so much the cost is chump change.

Two big gripes though.

1: The insta-death rooms. Rooms that just kill you as soon as you go too far into them. Sometimes warning, sometimes not. Thought you were going to start a boss fight? Nope, vampire just ate you. Sliding through a transition hall too fast? Sorry, gorgons in the middle. You usually need some item to cross them, but very rarely do you have much warning and you can easily be halfway across and into the death zone without realizing it. At least have a barrier- a little ledge or something- to slow down a wildly-sliding player. They wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for-

2: Poor save room placement. I can't stress this one enough. The game is old-school saving. No auto-save, no item-save, nothing. You save at a save room or you die and lose everything. Which isn't that bad...

...if the save rooms were actually placed well. Or indicated on the outside of doors, so you know which of the mysterious exits leads to a save station as soon as you see it and which one leads straight into a boss when you haven't saved in twenty minutes.

No, usually there's no save room within two rooms of the bosses, which makes for an annoying trek when you die and have to try again. There's usually one near every teleport room, but very few are actually adjacent without going through enemies.

In particular I'm complaining about Castle Apcher and the third area opened by a Chaos Coin. Difficult platforming with insta-death traps, not even your various invincibility methods work. Nearest save room is five rooms away, two with enemies. Teleport room is three rooms away so you have to sit through the bwoooooop animation every time you need to try again if you want to use one of the save stations actually adjacent to save rooms. Makes a difficult section really really frustrating with how long it takes to try again. As much as they put in Castle Apcher, they should've had a save room at the entrance.

Other than that it's been pretty fun.

The Parasite Mutant demo is out on Steam.

...I could swear it was originally Parasite Mutation, so they may have changed the name.

I love the options for a PS1 graphics filter, even though I didn't turn them on.

It's VERY faithful to the Parasite Eve formula... including necessary interactables not being all that obvious sometimes or requiring slightly jank approach and X mashing to find it.

Could use a tiny bit more hint as to what's happening, as the story is pretty vague so far- you were here to retrieve something and it all went to shit. The combat is... okay so far? It's definitely got the 'why am I so slow' that I remember, though you're a bit faster, but so are the enemies. And they seem to like AOEs, though there's been some laser attacks too, but I'm getting the hang of dodging things again, once I actually know what they're going to do. Health items are in short supply, and I have no healing ability yet, so that's tension, but the attacks so far don't really deal all that much damage, even the one miniboss I fought, so it's handleable. The double-gauge system, where you have two ATB gauges and you can attack on one and use items/spells on two, is pretty neat. You can also double-attack, if that more fits your fancy. Bullets are definitely the way to go, though I'm also wary of running out, as it's not as generous with ammo as its predecessor just yet. Being able to reload your gun outside of battle would be nice.

There's a little bit of Guide Dang It but I'm working it out.

Also the one save point I found so far being hidden in a back side room that's not obviously there unless you're checking all the corners (which you should be, but anyway) is a bit strange.

Because Endless Space is a GSG rather than a 4X, fundamentally. What you're running into is the fundamental difference. Systems that mechanically penalize or limit expansion make something into Grand Strategy, 'true' 4X (e.g. MoO, dominions) you're always supposed to expand when able.

Of course many GSGs are just 4X's with some system crudely slapped on top and often the system doesn't stop you, so you normally want to look for a way around playing the way it was intended so you can just expand anyway. ES2 and Stellaris are very much like this, for example (nobody can look at Stellaris patch 2.X robots and deny that that was just turning the game back into a 4X). But in the 'classical' GSG the system makes expansion itself a limited resource (e.g. you cannot have more systems than a limit and that limit increases at a rate largely independent of your economy - paradox games which use Causus Belli or the recent Dune RTS are like this, for example) so while you always want to expand when able usually your option to do so is limited.

Approval penalties are basically a soft implementation of the cap.

I played it. It's a little bit like they made a Parasite Eve game for the Dreamcast, which I'm down for. The MC's definitely gonna need people, and especially a Daniel, to interact with to really bring out the Parasite Eve buddy cop but it's a horror movie vibe that made Parasite Eve particularly charming. I do like the that the map tells you when you've got all the stuff in the area.

Also, that boss was totally a Xenomorph man. :V

It's been a while since I placed ES2 and I never played the original. I can only assume it's either due to a niche faction mechanic or there's something else that's lowering your citizenship happiness level. Maybe depending on the faction you're playing as or you're playing a game with a DLC mechanic some people recommend disabled. If you have more information about the specifics I could help you figure out why.

Completely unrelated but any interesting information regarding Hytale or am I late for that conversation? I haven't bought it yet and heard it's more of an obvious work-in-progress but I am impressed with the mods already being made in the first week and wonder if anyone is working on a total conversion yet. Anything that can match what can be made with something like datapacks for example.

One of the games I picked up with my Christmas gift card...

Squirrel With a Gun.

TL;DR: Squirrel mistakes sciency thing for a giant golden acorn and somehow eats it. When the agent tries to apprehend him, he faceplants and drops his gun, which the squirrel proceeds to pick up and use.

That's the game.

Or so it seems.

Walked into a circle of acorns on the street only for the game to start a cutscene in which A FUCKING TANK was sitting nearby and shoots me, reducing me to 1-ish HP. And out of the cockpit pops an agent, generic as the rest, which the game identifies as "Father"

Who looks, as I said, just as generic as the rest of the agents...

...Except for "DADDY" printed across the back of his generic agent suit in shiny sequins. He proceeds to do a Last Boss Move and fucks off. For now.

Gameplay is satisfying collect-a-thon gameplay, with little mini-challenges to get each 'golden acorn' while dodging or blasting the agents that spot you. The platforming could be better, and there's significant jank, but it kind of adds to the charm and randomness. You don't have a weapon wheel of any kind, you pick up guns in the field (you can unlock spawners with acorns) and if you drop it and leave it behind you've lost it. There IS a bullet time mode, which recharges when you kill agents and it goes pretty fast.

So far I've tried the pistol, which is pretty basic, the Uzi, didn't get to shoot any agents with that but it lets you fly (by shooting down, whereas the pistol just gives you extra air-jumps) and my so-far favorite, the shotgun, which pretty much oneshots agents but it's only got two ammo before you have to hit a spawner, ammo pickup, or use your Reload Energy (which is a thing) to get your bullets back. I'd call jumping with it a 'rocket jump' because of how high each shell flings you, but... I walked past a locked Rocket Launcher spawner, so that's probably the real rocket jump. There is some platforming, which is also a little jank, but the gun-jumps help.

TL;DR: This is a silly game.

It also has a shockingly good boss theme.

Didn't listen to this when you posted it because I hadn't heard it yet.

But yeah, it's pretty good.

Father's down. The Superman Pose got me good.

The car is also surprisingly fun to drive, despite being a little jank. It's canon though, as RC cars really do drive like that. At least the ones I've used in the past.

Has this been posted yet? I know nothing of Code Vein but after seeing this trailer I'm suddenly interested, and not just for the fan-service, the only reason I never became a weeb is because I'm a furry elitist.

Anyway, Zenon Gryfgote is my spirit animal.

They have definitely doubled down on everything that made the original fun, one of which was the cast. All of the character trailers have been interesting, though Zenon's is definitely the best.

I have almost no memories of Code Vein's plot, but I remember I had fun. It wasn't amazing or anything, but I liked it well enough. Especially the waifus.

I love Fallout New Vegas but I just realized it's missing something important. I want Doc Mitchell to give you the bullet he fished out of your skull. I want that bullet to be a subtype of ammo that you can only get one of in the game. And I want you to be able to carry that bullet all the way across the Mojave and back to Benny and then put it in his skull with maximum poetic justice. And then I want to hear the 'Ding!' of an achievement unlock.

Finally managed to play Half Life Alyx.

Not gonna lie, it's very Survival Horror esq. I love it, very big change of pace from Half Life 1 and 2. You can really feel what lacking an HEV suit causes. Gordan can just walk through gunfire like it isn't even there, Alyx gets fucked up real fast if you try. Like, 2 shot by a shotgun fast.

Alright, So I bough the Resident Evil 4 remaster off the PlayStation store last month, and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Now, it looks like they have the Resident Evil 2 Remastered edition on sale for $10.

Is that worth buying as well?

Yeah, there's nothing quite like having a Headcrab jump at your face in VR. It gets easier to deal with Combine troops as you progress and upgrade weapons, but they never stop being dangerous. And then of course there's the whole Jeff sequence, which is just great level design in general.

The Resident Evil 2 Remake isn't quite as action-y as the RE4 remake - you'll need to shepherd your ammo more, and will discover that frequently you're best off running by zombies because ammo is precious and zombies typically take multiple headshots to put down - but it's still a very good game. Definitely worth $10 in my view.

The RE3 Remake is a bit harder to recommend; it's not bad, per se, but it kind of feels more like DLC for the RE2 Remake than it's own game. If you like the RE2 Remake and it's on sale, I'd go for it, but otherwise you may want to hold off on it.

This just reminded me that I still need to get the platinum for the 1st one. Wanted to do it before this came out but that definitely ain't happening lmao

The Gun Runners DLC in-game achievements (which give you out-of-game achievements at certain threshholds) has one for shooting his gun out of his hand and killing him with it. It's not the same, but it's close.

Currently playing Total War Pharaoh as the Peleset under Walwetes.

Thought I'd do a funny, sail my horde down the Nile, leaving Canaan behind, and settle the ruined city of Akhetaten. Then, after introducing myself into the Egyptian Royal Tradition, and taking some more territory from my new neighbors, notably Sheydt, I did the unthinkable and revived the Cult of Aten, via the Cult of Akhenaten legacy. So, now you have monotheistic Philistines that invaded Egypt, and swore themselves to Pharaoh.

And, Jesus Christ, Egypt is a shitshow. The place is falling apart. I'm in a strong alliance with Merneptah, initially so his vassals didn't attack me while I got set up around Akhetaten, only for a Civil War to break out. I remained loyal to Pharaoh, and sailed my armies up and down the Nile, beating down the usurpers, but every few turns another faction breaks off and declares themselves Pharaoh. The invader from the sea, that revived a heretic faith of a forgotten Pharaoh, is the most loyal subordinate Merneptah has right now. Even his own kids are fighting him.

Though, with all the battles I'm fighting, and the incursions I am driving off Egyptian soil with the strength of my feather-crested armies, I also see that my own Legitimacy is slowly getting larger than Merneptah's, and now I wonder whether or not I should do another funny, and make Walwetes the next Pharaoh. An Atenist Pharaoh. An Atenist Pharaoh of the Sea People. After all, while Pharaoh was good to me, he is weak, and the number of enemies he has grows day by day, while my warriors bleed to defend his throne. It may take the strong hand of a new ruler to rein in this chaos, and make sure the sun shines upon the Nile once more.

I'm not sure how the rest of the world is doing, given I've mostly been cruising around the Nile, killing pretenders, and fighting off enemies from the desert in the west, above anything else. I know Mycenae under Agamemnon wanted a trade agreement with me for some reason, even though I'm nowhere near him, and Ithaca, under Odysseus, tried to invade me once (again, even though I'm nowhere near Greece), but his armies didn't make it further than the Nile Delta.

Should I do it? Should I establish a new Dynasty, and stab Merneptah in the back, uniting Egypt under the sun disc of Aten? Or should I roleplay as the loyal and grateful exiles from the sea, that are now defending the throne of the ruler that allowed them into his people's midst, and fight to the last in his name, even if they embraced a heretic god? Both honestly sound fun.

Accidentally posted this in Rants first.

If the Aten did not wish for you to seize the throne, he would not have sent you to do so.

So I have a hot take. It's against the grain and a bit inflammatory.

I thing pathfinder wrath of the righteous is better then Baldur gate 3.

Just from a story perspective. Like the dwarf that fucked up with the magic banner.

Yes, he fucked up royal. But the Queen sparing him was not mercy.

Giving him some question or such… maybe.

But sticking him in the position to be tormented for a generation.

That stuck with me.

He betrayed us but I felt no hate for the man. I just wanted to end his pain.

I wanted to protect the scared elf and punish the brutish inquisitor.

I wanted to free the jerk from the demon that held him.

It even got me to like the lawful evil gnome. I disagreed with him almost all the time but there was this… respect almost. It felt like he was a check and balance to me.

I'm going to give BG3 another shot but I don't think it can dislodge pathfinder for me.
