As repeatedly stated, his soul is too different from a normal human's to use any of the available traditions of magic. Presumably, he can still learn to cast magic in a way that would be exclusive to him, but it is too difficult to invent a spellcasting tradition from scratch.

Soul issues, I think. Though that may be addressed by his many tattoo additions.

 

Didn't he use some Avarice magic on Nyx in the Underworld to restore her good looks? He's invented a few tricks in his own "magic tradition", but nothing serious iirc. I don't think it's any more different than Atlantean Magic vs Martian Magic, for example.

 

I think that was more advanced ring use rather than magic.

Ah, that team interaction was enjoyable. It's been so long since we saw them together. I laughed at the klepto lantern comment. That's got to be foreshadowing. Any guesses what OL might acquire?

 

Yeah, finding out that the OSI is apparently WHY so many super scientists haven't "changed the world" with their discoveries was certainly an eye-opener for me when I found out, though in retrospect it probably shouldn't have surprised me.

Given how much of a stickler Hunter is though, he'd likely refuse the offer point blank, calling it a "F@#$ing Faustian Bargain", and then try to shoot OL for the perceived insult.

I think the two kind of blur at high enough levels, anyways. Either way, if Paragon is going to gain magic, it probably won't be by creating a custom magic tradition with theory, but more like learning to interact with magic using his rings, as he is doing right now. (like that "eat magic" trick)

I know they say 'don't look the gift horse in the mouth', but when it's someone like Canis offering, always check the fine print, so to speak.

Would the locals be able to tell that at first sight? Apokaliptians are basically close to human, with few exceptions..

Lastly,a name-sign, which traditionally may only be given by a deaf person. I'd ad-hoc the name sign "Sivana" as the right hand signing Crazy with an S handshape, and the left hand doing Scientist.

 

I get the feeling that something like this can show up in a Terry Pratchett book.

No they're necromancers, who use such magics on a regular basis with the Grundymen.

Angels apparently don't like necromancers all that much.

Renegades MotherBox managed to open a Boom tube from Equestria to Earth, so it's possible that other Boxes can also do it.

Though renegades Boxes both belonged to brilliant scientists so they may have some more advanced features that an ordinary Box may lack.

Paragon Magni actually killed that cloud thing when OL went to Venus and seeing as his family has been prepping to fight the Sheeda it is highly likely that they detected something else, like those neck things, and got rid of it.

We haven't been seeing much of him to be honest.

 

Actually, come to think of it, he has a FAR more concerning problem: lacking a spellcasting cultural tradition appropriate to his soul structure means he doesn't know what NOT to do. We've already seen multiple examples of people unknowingly invoking magic, with things like alchemy, and Paul's unusual soul structure means that even things that have always been safe for other people might invoke DUCK OF DOOM summoning when he does it.

 

The subject here disagrees any way I can try it. "Will your contacts share our discoveries with them?" "Will your contacts wish to share our discoveries with them?"

If I'm understanding the meaning correctly, you might try something like

"And will your 'contacts' wish to accompany us? Or that we share our discoveries with them?"

or like

"And will your 'contacts' wish to accompany us? Or share in our discoveries(--)?"

I tried to come up with an alternative using "...wish us to...", so as to be able to use the second sentence unaltered. But I couldn't see any way to do it that way without substantial reconstruction.


Which of course brings me to the other possibility: it could be a perfectly ordinary "mistake" of speech, accurately recorded as it was spoken. Quite plausible given the need to jam those two idioms together and the likelihood of being understood regardless.

I think he's kind of side stepped his way into non-standard magic.

 

Yeah it's a trick he learned from that plant green lantern.

He used it to beat Killowog and summon the dryad.

Currently I think he can just do a few small spells.

 

Pity that Zoat went the way he did there, I think the way it seems to work in the comics is more interesting in general, and for this story in specific.

In the comics, Frankenstein was revealed to be a Grundyman because he was made with a drop of Melmoth's ichor, after he replaced his blood with the water of life from a New God artifact, the cauldron of rebirth, to become immortal.

Which then would mean that is what makes the grundymen- water of life contamination.

Which means that their necromancers don't raise anyone, they simply take advantage of the undead created by burial in water of life tainted soil.

So like Pet Cemetary if a necromancer claimed that area as his territory for free minions.

So grundymen would be an alchemical transformation, yes?

It would be an alchemical formula that raises the dead which would mean that comparing it to the water of a lazarus pit might lead to breakthroughs.

It's also a chemical formula that gives superhuman strength, resistance to injury, and a healing factor like the Donner formula, which would be another formula that comparing it to could lead to breakthroughs.

Just seems like a missed opportunity, is all....

 

He might still do this as we haven't seen all that much of Witch World or Melmoth.

Or he may go with a different explanation because he either considers it to make more sense than what was presented in the comics.

What is an "authodoxy?" Can't find a definition for it. From various contexts I'm assuming it means something like "de facto cultural tradition."

doxy refers to teaching, autho refers to originator or promoter, so "promoted teaching" here.

Seems to be fancy way of saying the same thing as orthodoxy in this instance- Alchemy isn't promoted for teaching, so barring the occasional oddball, you won't find alchemists in Atlantis.

Which is ironic since the Atlanteans were transformed by a serum in Atlantis Chronicles.

Which since Zoat hat that habit of making things chemical alchemy, would make the Atlantean transformation alchemy.

 

In this story the Atlanteans transformed themselves through magical grafting to give themselves the ability to breathe and survive underwater.

So far the only things Zoat has made into alchemy are the Danner and Garrick formulas and the gas Sandman used. At least that's what I remember.

Even if the Atlanteans used alchemy in their transformation the aquatic environment may have made it difficult to practice and after some time people just lost interest in it.
