Because I started reading the JK In Other Worlds story and there are more characters in the main group than at the end of the original...like Fubuki and Rei. Maybe? It sounds like it fits into our tendency to shorten words and put an upward inflection on the end … 'arvie', 'barbie', etc. personally I've never heard it, so it might be regional.

I'd imagine more of 'little blue-ringed-murderous-bastard', but that's not exactly shortening per se …

Fair. I just found it on wiktionary and found it perfect for the kind of thing I want. Right, more research.

(Namely, with friends I have the concept of a Hug Squiddie (namely a Sentinel from The Matrix as a hugger) and I wanted to create something similiar but with an Octopus.)
