With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I'll start by saying I don't have the knowledge for a better solution but Anarky needs to be put down. He's stating that he's Not going to stop and Will continue down the path he's walking. Yeah No something needs to be Done because what's happening Now isn't working. So people more knowledgeable than me find a solution cause if not….

Dude, come on. We're not executing or lobotomizing a 10-year-old. Besides, even with all Anarky has done, he's still not nearly as psychotic or homicidal as his father.

Yes, and before he said that he still had experience in running a company.

It's also a chocolate company. If it fails it isn't going to destroy the planet.
No, it was a general distribution company at that point.

Ahh, yes.

The plant queen that does not mind control people, is a benevolent ruler, and was in the process of getting attacked by a fascist empire that enslaved people.

Don't forget the race of metal people that tried to blow up the sun and commit multiple genocides that she was also fighting.

Yes, stopping a bunch of genocides and the resurgence of a fascist empire is a waste of time.

Paul should just stick to getting kittens out of trees.
It was literally confirmed in story that she uses biological mind control.

And Paul giving her all that stuff was the cause of the radiation people being conquered and forced to activate their MADD contingency.

And no, he didn't stop a genocide, he caused it, as without his constant intervention the whole situation would have sat static.

A few more legacy corrections.

"The difference is: he can go home. I come from a parallel universe. I have no way to go back. I suppose I could.. build a habitat on the moon or something." That could actually be an interesting anyway.
Remove "an", or expand the sentence.

I hold the card Eris gave me out to her. "Can you tell me what this says? The rings are getting stuck."

She studies it for a moment. "For a good time, call Eris on-." I snatch it back and slide it into a pouch. "It seems that she's quite taken with you.
Need to find the chapter, but worth adding a line post-anti life when OL is trying to reach Eris and gets a pie in the face, and add a reference to this card and why it doesn't work. I think it included him screaming that "ERIS HAS A FAT ARSE" or something like that?

"True. I'm not completely sure I could beat you." I'm really not. Given his visible frustration when he lost the ability to make me soil myself I'm going to assume that he wasn't faking, but that took everything I could.
Replace "could" with "had".

No, it was a general distribution company at that point

Which he would still not be able to run since he doesn't have the skills for that job.

It was literally confirmed in story that she uses biological mind control

It was confirmed that she can do it, not that she does.

Provide an example where she takes over someone's will without their consent, or drop it.

And Paul giving her all that stuff was the cause of the radiation people being conquered and forced to activate their MADD contingency.

Yeah, because the constant warfare was just so great.

And this is just a pretty accurate example of why I hate Anarky as a character. All that holier-than-thou attitude combined with what feels like undeserved intelligence just makes me wish for him to go meet Truck-kun, but without the isekai part.

I do want to give Hunter the benefit of the doubt. It feels like someone took advantage of a stupid decision he made to do all of this. And maybe until now nothing has made him double guess his frankly absurd use of magic? Because if I understood correctly, it sounds like he is not actually making contact with fae creatures "striking small deals", he is just reality warping based on belief and doesn't understand there might be consequences or that it is happening.

@Darko

Hey Darko, for your own mental health and blood pressure I recommend you stop beating this particular dead horse.

I agree with you and I'm on your side. But the fella your arguing with has never used logic to stand on any hill he has stood on in the past. He's a contrarian.
If Paul had done exactly what he's arguing Paul should have done. He would be making the opposite case.

And where exactly is he supposed to find that?
Maltus, if he can get one of the Controllers or a more trustworthy Matusian to do it? Probably not on Earth, though Hephestean should be able to keep him out of trouble. The main problem is that Lonnie is too smart, and the supergeniuses Paul knows do have too many demands on their time, as well as in many cases being really unsuitable for raising a child to be mentally healthy (and to not be a supervillain), like Dox or Sivana. Of course, the main problem with the options that I suggested is that Lonnie would learn tech and powers from them far faster than he'd learn restraint, and then go on to make a bigger mess.

I really feel like there should be a practical solution that isn't morally repugnant, but I'm not sure what it is.

EDIT: Is Dox dating Georgia Sivana in this continuity? I can see them being an option Paul considers in that case, but if that's the one he goes with I'm going to think its foreshadowing more shenanigans, rather than solving the problem. Beautia or Magnus would be better options, but still probably backfire.

Thank you, corrected.

Huh. That's why I like him as a character.

Psychoprompt (part 5) New
9th January 2257
Uh… Night, local time?

"Of course. We would be happy to arrange an engineering team to work on your ship." The brakiri… He's either a governor or a capo, and I'm not completely sure that the brakiri distinguish between the two-.

Naturally, we do. We have governors, and other species have capos.

Well, he looks pretty happy. One of my passengers-

Zanthei Mosanda, at your service.

-was a.. privateer?

An unlicenced privateer.

That's just a pirate.

Not if you're as good as me.

And he left a pile of cash on a rock in the middle of nowhere, along with certain cultural relics… Hang on, were they brakiri cultural relics?

They were certainly cultural relics.

Great. Well, he left them somewhere without letting anyone in his syndicate know. And providing them a few handfuls of his goods as evidence along with a recording of the site and its coordinates allowed me to arrange for the extra engineers Ja'Kurn suggested.

"I'm glad to hear it. Then unless there's anything else-."

"There.. are.. one or two matters." I slump slightly. "For my.. own curiosity."

Oh here we go. I was wondering how long he'd take.

"Yes?"

"The value of the late captain's treasure trove is significantly larger than the cost of employing engineers for a ship refurbishment. Even… Hiring the very best and covering the contract-breaking penalty fees so that they can leave their current employer immediately. I am a little concerned that you are not being entirely open and honest with me."

Tell him-.

"Of course I'm not being entirely open and honest with you. You're a business partner, not my confessor."

The governor visibly relaxes.

That works.

"You see, if it were me and I came across a fortune like this, I would auction it off… Slowly, over a period of years, while increasing my personal security so as to ensure that my safety was maintained. You… Aren't doing that."

"Maintaining good relations with prospective business partners sometimes involves taking a temporary hit in order to preserve the… Legislative environment. The trove isn't mine. I didn't earn it. And I have an obligation to its legitimate owner which places on me the burden to actually follow the law. And I don't think you're going to forget this."

"You did this for a favourable business relationship? I mean, certainly, the Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate will add you to our favoured client list, but… Even so…"

Feed him the line about earning your own success! I fooled a dozen pellet-eaters with that one!

"If I hadn't, and your syndicate found out about it, how many assassins would I have been looking at?"

"None. But about four loss adjusters. Possibly five, if you were incautious."

"And legal action."

"We'd try, but I'm not sure if we'd have won."

"All to keep money I found by total fluke. I want my success to be mine. If I'd followed clues and investigated dozens of possible sites I might feel that I'd earned it, but as it is…" I shake my head.

"That… Does make a little more sense. Now, about my fees."

He's a pirate!

"Surely that's between you and the rest of the Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate?"

"It could be, but it doesn't have to be."

A pirate I tell you!

I shake my head again. "Forgive me, I'm not that familiar with brakiri culture."

"May I assume that you have a complete record of all of the valuables recovered?"

"You may."

As if I'd forget.

"Well, a fee for arranging transportation, storage and sales would not be unreasonable, hm?"

I look at him askance. "Ah…"

"Now, this would be a private arrangement between you and me."

And me!

"You would still be a favoured customer whether you agree or not. But if you agreed, I would be your point of contact going forwards, and I can be very quiet and very efficient."

Okay, is this a-?

Three percent net or five percent cash, no deductions.

Do I just say that, or is that a negotiating positio-?

Of course it's a negotiating position! How did your species discover asset leverage?!

Perverse incentives and self-destructive monetary policy, mostly.

"Given the risk in transportation and the work this will involve on your part, I believe that three percent of the net value would be a reasonable level of remuneration which won't see 'loss adjusters' sent after either of us."

"But we won't know the net value for some time, while my costs are up front."

"You could just bill the Syndicate? Or if that would be… Risky, perhaps five percent of the cash? That would allow you to turn a profit almost immediately, and I'm sure that there are other kickbacks you could arrange during the asset realisation process."

"Ten percent is more usual in situations like this."

"Ten percent implies that you're not just going to use your cousin's shipping company."

Ooh, good guess.

He tilts his head to the left. "Second cousin, actually."

"Ten percent also implies that you did some work rather than getting lucky when if fell into your lap. I'm willing to go up to six, or cover your costs."

"I just assumed that costs were included."

"Assumptions and two grulls will buy you a sandwich."

"Hah!" He smiles broadly. "I will remember that phrase. Can I tell the other syndicate leaders that you want me to handle the sale?"

"Once the treasure is in Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate hands, I am-" I fan out my hands. "-happy to go along with whatever my brakiri cultural consultant thinks is best."

"Then we have an understanding. I will have the documents drafted for your approval at once. Please consider Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate for all your future dealings with the Brakiri Syndicracy."

I nod politely. "I certainly will."

It's only a crime when you get caught.

Classic British pastime; stealing cultural relics.

with brakhiri culture."
"brakiri"

Let me know when you find it.
"ERIS HAS A FAT ARSE!"

Euryale shrinks back. "What?"

"She's nominally my patron. I haven't actually spoken to her directly for a little while so-."

Splat!

I wipe the custard pie off my face.

"I know that's a classic, but this isn't really the time-."

There's writing on the foil case. I-.

The pie is construct-proof.

That would be interesting to study if not for the fact that the construct-proofing means that I can't put it into subspace. Instead, I shake the remains of the pie out and read it.

"'To: Pavlos. If you're reading this, then you've become too predictable. This is automatic. Try harder. Eris.'"
This is the bit I was thinking of, but you could mention it in any of the chapters leading up to this, I suppose.

Ah, using his passengers' cultural knowledge to avoid missteps in negotiations. In this case, it seems quite ludicrous amounts of money are involved, which naturally gets any brakiri's full attention.

Well, he looks pretty happy. One of my passengers-

Zanthei Mosanda, at your service.
Nice of him to introduce himself for the mental journal.

-was a.. privateer?

An unlicenced privateer.
Presumably because formal endorsement came with far too many cuts of profits to those who would call themselves his backers?

That's just a pirate.

Not if you're as good as me.
So we're kind of dealing with the Brakiri Jack Sparrow. Or someone who would think himself so if he had the cultural knowledge of him.

And he left a pile of cash on a rock in the middle of nowhere, along with certain cultural relics… Hang on, were they brakiri cultural relics?

They were certainly cultural relics.
...Ah. I wonder if Speaker Paul is feeling a strange kinship to him right now via his British ancestry?

Oh, dangling bait like that in front of a species with a strong acquisitive drive? I'm betting the fellow he contacted was totally not celebrating once he was in private.

"There.. are.. one or two matters." I slump slightly. "For my.. own curiosity."

Oh here we go. I was wondering how long he'd take.
And here come the offer of additional services, no doubt. For a generously small fee, of course.

Ah, he's suspicious because a brakiri would not be throwing this much money at something so simple, eh?

Tell him-.

"Of course I'm not being entirely open and honest with you. You're a business partner, not my confessor."
Wonder how close the overlap between religious confessors and blackmail material providers is?

The governor visibly relaxes.

That works.
Some things are just that obvious about a culture.

"You see, if it were me and I came across a fortune like this, I would auction it off… Slowly, over a period of years, while increasing my personal security so as to ensure that my safety was maintained. You… Aren't doing that."
Yes, and that would draw the kind of attention you'd need that security to protect against. Speaker Paul has different requirements.

And by dumping it all at once now, there's less chance of someone coming after him in hopes of getting more from him. Not zero chance, of course, but still...

"You did this for a favourable business relationship? I mean, certainly, the Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate will add you to our favoured client list, but… Even so…"

Feed him the line about earning your own success! I fooled a dozen pellet-eaters with that one!
Feeding the golden goose in hopes it lays another golden egg for them, eh?

"If I hadn't, and your syndicate found out about it, how many assassins would I have been looking at?"

"None. But about four loss adjusters. Possibly five, if you were incautious."
Ah, another case of 'we call them this, other species call them far more unpleasant names.'

"And legal action."

"We'd try, but I'm not sure if we'd have won."
And it would likely have been a bloody affair.

"All to keep money I found by total fluke. I want my success to be mine. If I'd followed clues and investigated dozens of possible sites I might feel that I'd earned it, but as it is…" I shake my head.

"That… Does make a little more sense. Now, about my fees."
Ah, navigating the conversational minefield quite well thanks to his partial map.

He's a pirate!

"Surely that's between you and the rest of the Rooshnoon-Koravii Syndicate?"
'None of my business, sir.'

"It could be, but it doesn't have to be."

A pirate I tell you!
Thank you for the input, mister Pot.

I shake my head again. "Forgive me, I'm not that familiar with brakiri culture."

"May I assume that you have a complete record of all of the valuables recovered?"
As if he wouldn't have a full scan via the Ring...

"You may."

As if I'd forget.
...As a backup to direct personal awareness. There's likely things the Ring couldn't identify, for example.

"Well, a fee for arranging transportation, storage and sales would not be unreasonable, hm?"

I look at him askance. "Ah…"
Ah, 'handling' fees.

"Now, this would be a private arrangement between you and me."

And me!
But you are something of a silent partner, however.

"You would still be a favoured customer whether you agree or not. But if you agreed, I would be your point of contact going forwards, and I can be very quiet and very efficient."

Okay, is this a-?
Possible extortion attempt? Quite likely, but I would guess this is a standard attempt to squeeze extra money out of you.

Three percent net or five percent cash, no deductions.

Do I just say that, or is that a negotiating positio-?
I'm sure the gentle-brakiri would feel offended if you just skip the cut-and-thrust of negotiations.

Of course it's a negotiating position! How did your species discover asset leverage?!

Perverse incentives and self-destructive monetary policy, mostly.
It does occasionally come with total financial collapses and frequent depressions, but that's the game we play...

"Given the risk in transportation and the work this will involve on your part, I believe that three percent of the net value would be a reasonable level of remuneration which won't see 'loss adjusters' sent after either of us."

"But we won't know the net value for some time, while my costs are up front."
Good, first shot fired. And a reasonable defence applied to it.

"You could just bill the Syndicate? Or if that would be… Risky, perhaps five percent of the cash? That would allow you to turn a profit almost immediately, and I'm sure that there are other kickbacks you could arrange during the asset realisation process."

"Ten percent is more usual in situations like this."
And that's cutting your own throat, isn't it? 😏

"Ten percent implies that you're not just going to use your cousin's shipping company."

Ooh, good guess.

He tilts his head to the left. "Second cousin, actually."
A fine jab, and accurate! A moment of humorous comradery was created.

"Ten percent also implies that you did some work rather than getting lucky when if fell into your lap. I'm willing to go up to six, or cover your costs."

"I just assumed that costs were included."
Yes, well, I'm sure you've heard the human expression about assumptions.

"Assumptions and two grulls will buy you a sandwich."

"Hah!" He smiles broadly. "I will remember that phrase. Can I tell the other syndicate leaders that you want me to handle the sale?"
'Wish in one hand, defecate in the other, see which fills first.' would have been a fun one to try, if a little crude.

Hopefully that doesn't lock out future business with other syndicates. Then again, that might be taken as an insult but them... Loss Adjusters may be dispatched.

An entertaining little bit of negotiation, and a good insight into the Brakiri character (at least as it appears in this version.) I'd say Speaker Paul came out of it quite well, thanks to his passenger providing advice. Wonder if the Brakiri negotiator felt a little confused by the human's positively brakiri approach to discussions...

Back to B5!Paul, and now he's dealing with Brakiri. This seems to be not only getting access to people who can actually work with the yacht he now has, I also suspect he's getting some actual currency.

You know, I don't really remember anything too in depth about the Brakiri in the show itself, other than the "Day of the Dead" event.

They're an extremely capitalistic society and their government is basically composed of powerful corporations.

They actually received signals from 20th century Earth.

I wonder if B5!Paul is going to earn any sort of magical presence for assisting these ghosts in their final business. Enlightenment COULD happen, but I think it'll be something else. Karma? Consistent good fortune?

Anyway, it could wind up being a double-edged sword. A vulnerability to the soul thieves specifically, to be discovered when they track him down.

Ah the Brakiri, one of the many doomed species.

Well, technically all the species outside the Humans and Minbari are doomed, but the point stands.
The only ones we know who never progress past their "Third Age" by B5 phrasing were the Narn and Centauri... mainly because they never got over their mutual hate for each other(and even then, I don't think they went extinct). Beyond that, we don't know what happens to any of the League races.

Unless you're going by JMS's seeming low-level bias towards more "spiritual" races vs the more "materialistic" ones.

They weren't really expecting or looking for a good time, there.
Sure, but OL needed to contact Eris, and the card should've allowed that unless something was stopping it from working, or he forgot, or he decided not to use it. We know he can't forget and we know that "desperate times, desperate measures" are acceptable to him, so it has to be the first one.

And this is just a pretty accurate example of why I hate Anarky as a character. All that holier-than-thou attitude combined with what feels like undeserved intelligence just makes me wish for him to go meet Truck-kun, but without the isekai part.

Does that mean he never wises up on his own and will need to be slapped down when he does something that is either unforgivable or unreversable?

Guys, cut Anarky some slack. He's a 10-year old kid. Of course he's going to act immature and holier-than-thou. Sure, he's an annoying brat, but most people are like that at that age. At the end of the day, a little kid with a genius brain is still just a little kid, and he shouldn't be expected to have the maturity or life experience of an adult. Because again, he's just ten, and he hasn't even gotten to puberty yet.

Age is hardly an excuse when he starts messing with free will, the fabric of reality, kills someone, or something just as bad if not worse. I don't expect the death penalty or Paul to assimilate him, but I would expect at least a few bruises.
