Hyrule Rising (Zelda/Modern)

C'mon vote for Zelda, we never play Zelda. It's always Link, Link, Link.

[X] A girl on the cusp of adolescence, staring out of the window and watching, always watching. You wonder what life is like away from the quiet halls and servants. Beyond the walls, adventure awaits.

Vote called.

[X] 5 A boy lurking in the slums. You're used to being alone, but maybe this new gang won't be like the others. Maybe this time you'll be able to make things work, and your fits of rage won't burn another bridge.: (Xicree, Guile, Megaolix, StackedDeck, BenignBrokenBoundaries)
[X] 8 A girl on the cusp of adolescence, staring out of the window and watching, always watching. You wonder what life is like away from the quiet halls and servants. Beyond the walls, adventure awaits.: (Cassiemouse, TotalAbsolutism, Jiven, Ct613hulu, redaeth, Grosstoad, Ephemeral_Dreamer, Darkened)
[X] 7 A young boy roaming the steel and concrete corridors. Summer ends, but your fifth grade of school is on indefinite hold. Nobody's supposed to be out and about, but you don't have any parents to object.: (Chibi-Reaper, Silversun17, Unyouthful Steve, CrossyCross, mishie, Biigoh, KaiserDrgn)

You are Zelda, and you are eleven years old.

You have the following skills.
- Piano
- Formal Etiquette
- Language (English) [+]
- Mathematics

You put down your pen on the desk. Beside it, square with the edge of the table, is your homework. It's all homework by a strict definition of the word, since you're home schooled, but since your math tutor isn't present it's homework, not schoolwork.

Figures run down the page in neat lines, each line of equations starting at the left-hand margin and continuing until there was no more room, and then resuming on the next line with a half-inch indentation. You check through the stack one last time, then nod. They're correct.

You close the textbook and pick up the familiar weight, sliding it back onto the shelf in the corner of your study room. You have a study room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and even a living room of your own with a giant picture window that looks out over the garden, which is grand.

It's very nice here.

Next is English, and you eye that book with quiet dread. You aren't Melville's biggest fan.

But you slide the math work into its folder and set it aside for the tutor when he comes tomorrow, then open the classic of American literature to the chapter on whales.

As it turns out, there are many more chapters on whales than the first. How . . . interesting.

When that's done you stand up and stretch. Your dress shifts around you in the cool, dry air, and you go to your bedroom to retrieve a tube of Chap Stick for your lips. The bit window catches your attention on your way, though, so you stand by it for a few minutes, looking down at the garden.

The roses are blooming.

They climb the inner wall en masse, turning the chain links into great green wall seven feet tall. Beyond that lies the rest of your family's grounds, and you dimly remember walking through them, or being carried. But that was years ago, before . . .

. . . Before everything. Before the top floor of your family's home was torn apart and rebuilt to be airtight, with its own separate air conditioner that diverted the charge from the strange radiation in the air into other things. Before you only saw your parents in transparent plastic masks and white suits. Before your mother saw her reflection and realized she was turning into a freak too.

Before your mother left and never came back.

You're not supposed to know, but the cleaning staff talk when they think you aren't listening, and their face masks don't muffle their voices as much as they think they do, and you never ever forget.

Outside the ten foot stone walls surrounding your home, people are being turned into monsters, inhuman things.

Your ears have a very slight point.

It's your condition. You're very delicate, especially to whatever's in the air outside, so you listen to your father and don't put up a fuss.

But all the same you're curious as to whether being different might not be so bad.

. . . You'll figure that out later. It's time for snacks, and Monday is Oreos and milk.

Will the roses bloom again this year?
[] Yes. There's not a hard frost, so they'll bloom again.
[] Not this year. Winter will be here too soon.
[] No. You're surprised they're blooming now, actually.

What color is your hair?
[] Blonde

I don't really know my Zeldas well enough for this, but blooming roses? Why not.

[X] Yes. There's not a hard frost, so they'll bloom again.
Fingers crossed that this is either a metaphor for blood or sex. Hey, you never know.

Hmm, sounds like a optimism-pessimism slider.
[X] Yes. There's not a hard frost, so they'll bloom again.

Hair... Dang.
Brown is definitively take cues from Twilight Princess, and that will be the jaded, pragmatic one.
Unsure between Blond and Golden. One might be the Skyward Sword, the innocent and active one, but actually hiding a great plot. I am not too familiar with the other, but probably generic Zelda, both scholar and princess-y?
[X] Blond

Most of these are personal guesses.

I'll go ahead and say what the votes mean. Whether the roses bloom or not is a location vote for where in America you start out once the intro (child) section is over. Hair is indeed general temperament, with blond=Skyward Sword, golden=Ocarina of Time, and brown=Twilight Princess.

Any my other questions?

Each update prior to your adulthood will take place over one year, with your choices in the previous year opening up new options for you to choose from. Consider this an extended character creation, and the choices you make will influence your status, knowledge, abilities, and resources when you leave your home.

Your name is Zelda Nolan, you are twelve years old, and your straight blond hair hangs midway down your back in a loose ponytail.

With your birthday comes a little more freedom, just enough that you notice it. Sundays you get to sleep in another hour, and you stay up an hour later on Fridays and Saturdays. Monday through Friday your schedule has an even greater change, though. Your tutors stay an extra three hours, and the material you're expected to learn expands to cover a variety of new subjects from drawing to poetry.

It's a busy schedule, and when you wake one morning to a stabbing pain deep in your belly, it only gets busier. Soon enough the beginnings of a physical change overcome you, and you're given a single lesson on feminine hygiene by the younger of your three tutors, though she pauses awkwardly in the presentation. The next day a new box of products appears in your bathroom.

Languages, handwriting, drawing, dance, math, poetry, music, history, and literature fill your days in a blur of knowledge, and you know it all. Forgetting something you know? That you might fail to remember anything never crosses your mind, and it's not until the fat tutor (there is a fat one, a skinny one, and a young woman) admits that he's forgotten the specifics of how to write a cursive 'P' that you have the epiphany.

You are not normal.

It's nothing to do with the ever so slight points on your ears or your delicate immune system, but instead with how you've never forgotten a single thing. You confirm the irregularity by asking whether the skinny tutor has eggs and fruit for breakfast like you do, and then when the last time he had apricot preserves was.

He didn't know.

He honestly didn't know when the last time was, and that was . . . more than slightly disturbing. What if he was wrong? What if you were being taught the wrong things?

Over the following week you ask your other tutors small questions, and one by one they confirm what you'd feared. Forgetting things that you're supposed to know is normal, and you're the strange one.

Small ears, barely pointed, don't betray how vulnerable you are to what fills the air outside your rooms, but is there a deeper change that lurks beneath your skin?

Should you attempt to hide this abnormality?
[] Yes
[] No

What is your most favorite subject? Pick one. Results will be ordered to form a hierarchy of preference. The various choices will 'level up' the more you select options in the same line over the years.
[] Foreign Languages
[] Handwriting
[] Drawing
[] Dance
[] Mathematics
[] Poetry
[] Music
[] History
[] Literature

If we wanted to go physical, we should have voted for golden hair.

Let's ramp up magic, with a firm grounding in mathematics; the underlying tool most useful in just about any system with logical rules.

Gib's post was unclear and also described our hair as blonde.

Nevertheless, math is super important for ninjas. That is how you calculate ricochet angles!

Yes, that was a bit of a doof on my part. In my defense honey-blond is still blond, even though it's less blond than yellow-blond. I should probably have used yellow as the Skyward Sword choice.

Now here's an example of how skills will be determined, in case anybody wants to do some quest magic with them. You're mainly getting mental and social "growing" skills at the moment, and taking them will improve your malleable young mind's aptitude in that area. You'll gain notable experience with the top half of all items voted for, so if there are eight choices voted for, four will gain proficiency, four votes gain two proficiencies, etc.

You started with . . .

Language (English)
Language (English), Formal Etiquette, Piano, Mathematics

So if the current voting pattern holds true until tonight when I call the vote, that will expand to . . .

Language (English)
Language (English), Formal Etiquette, Piano, Mathematics
Mathematics, Dance

When I write the options for next years' skills I see that you have a two-year streak in Mathematics going on, so I'll offer a more advanced version of that. You'll still have learning a non-English language available to you from your Language English [+] (representing two years in which you studied it) as well, but the other options will all be basic learning topics available to a thirteen year old girl that can't go outside.

Any questions?

EDIT: I forgot to make it explicitly clear, but choosing another language choice this round will count as if you'd selected Language (English) a third time, and will open up broader language specialties.
