Yes it is. Above average even. High is better. 6s are a critical success, 1s are a complication.

---------------------

You head north.

This jungle is your territory, you've probably been over every piece of it a dozen times. Yet today everything looks fresh and new.

There is a crevice of rock hidden in that bramble bush that you haven't noticed before.

Those trees provide an excellent lookout over one of your favorite spots to prowl, you might want to avoid that in the future.

That tree is sagging under the weight of several bulging thorn plants. They migrate slowly, but it wouldn't take much to collapse the whole structure.

You catch a glimpse of something as you near the lake. A flash of silver that is notable because you've never seen anything like it before. You stop, observing carefully, but it doesn't reappear. Still, it might be best to take the long way around.

Ahead is the lake, and beyond that a wide grassy area. Any closer and you'll be out of your territory. A quick glance around spots an armored turtle sunning itself near the shore, but nothing else is in sight.

An armored turtle usually ranges from five feet to ten feet tall and a little under that in width, giving them a vaguely box shape. 90% of that bulk is armored shell, with legs and head poking out of gaps. They're slow and unintelligent, but react to all threats in the same way. Tuck into the shell and take swipes with its monster claws when the opportunity presents itself. The sides of its legs are armored almost as thickly as the shell itself, so getting at it when retracted is almost impossible. You've never tried going in after the head yourself, but you've seen a running lizard lose an arm (and moments later, its life) that way. Attacking it head on would be stupid.

Your stomach rumbles quietly.

What now?

-----------------
[-] Well, if life gives you turtles... (Battle mode!)
[-] Hunting. Find bigger game to eat. (Besides the turtle)
[-] Continue exploring the lake.
[-] Go back and look at something else.
[-] Circle around and head for the plains, whatever that silver thing was its making you nervous.
[-] Write-in

[X] Well, if life gives you turtles... (Battle mode!)

Probably not the best idea but that 6 means that nothing TOO bad will happen to us just by going near the lake...
Right?

Turtles usually aren’t your speed but this one looks extra delicious today. Its on the low end for sheer size, alone, and unlikely to flee when your distraction starts. A bit more exposed than you’d like but...

Another quick look around confirms neither the silver flash, nor anything else are around. Your tail thumps in anticipation of a good meal.

With an effort of will you force your aura into the world around you. The air distorts, as if under great heat. The mud at the edge of where the turtle is sunning itself seems to twitch and move under its own power. Around you, the trees seem to grow taller and reach inwards.

Terrain altered, you begin to croon. Air vibrates through that special chamber in your throat and sets the world dancing around you. Trees shake, air pulses like a living thing and the mud ripples with a thousand minuscule circles. You uncurl yourself and bound onto the shoreline, making a dash for the turtle. Your tricks leap with you, crashing onto the turtle all at once. It snorts and you can see its eyes rolling wildly as it retreats into its shell. You’re fairly certain it doesn’t notice you, a fact that is reinforced by a lack of reaction when you leap onto the back of its shell. You even manage to do it lightly enough that the thing doesn't try to roll you into a paste. If you had to guess, it might not even realize you're here...

It adds to the connected factor. Keeping both up will mean it takes significantly longer for the turtle's brain to go "Okay this is really weird but nothing bad is happening." but when it does you'll have a significantly higher chance of success. Time matters because you're sitting out in the open in an extremely hostile environment near an area with other dangerous predators who like nothing more than ganging up on you.

The percentages are your likelihood for a successfully maneuver.

They look pretty low, but armor turtle usually isn't worth the time and effort for how dangerous it is. As you're now "thinking outside the box" you actually have a chance as opposed to "Not really feasible to fight no matter what you try."

Slowly, so as not to startle the beast, you draw your warped terrain back inside. It settles on your skin like a warm mantle and pulses in time with your distracting reverb. Below you you feel the vibrations echoing through the turtle’s shell, worrying it even as the world it can see reverts to normal.

Fortunately, armored turtles aren’t very smart.

You almost purr with satisfaction as the monster pokes its head out of its shell. If you didn’t know any better you’d say you could see it reasoning that the vibrations weren’t connected to the weird landscape. That it couldn’t see a threat, so there was no threat. That it could go back to minding its own business...

(Death from above! Roll&Damage: 1d100=42(+20 circumstance), 2d6=7(+2 Str), 2d6=6 (+2 Str) Threshold needed: 60. SUCCESS!)

You lunge, landing on the beast’s skull with a crack. Claws scrabble across armored plates, seeking and finding gaps to tear into the soft flesh below. The turtle screams in pain as you savage its head, neck, and face. It whips from side to side, attempting to dislodge you and flailing its legs about. Finally, with a heave it throws you off. You land on your feet, triumphant and dripping with blood and chunks of flesh. The turtle roars, too hurt and enraged to even consider retreating back into its shell.

Good, you wanted a fight anyway.

It snaps at you, trying to close those massive teeth on your tender flesh. For its trouble you bat it in the head and dance to the side. Even as the reverberations die out you can see the trouble its having keeping its eyes on you, swaying drunkenly and only catching a bit of fur. Confused, it takes a moment to shake off the lingering dizziness. Its blinks the world back into focus shortly.

And gets your claws swiped across its eyes for its troubles.

The instinctive spin and slash of its claws catches you in the side and throws you away from the beast. It didn’t do much damage though, and you’re back on the turtle in a flash. You slash your claws across the side of its head and take a headbutt in return. When it opens its terrible maw to slam down onto you you manage to skitter out of the way, only to catch a forelimb in the side. You're bruised and battered, but it is significantly more hurt. Unwilling to continue dueling with the much larger creature, you throw yourself at it again, Ripping and tearing at its profusely bleeding face until it desperately lifts itself up just to get away.

So you tear its throat out with your teeth.

Hot red blood sprays out, coating you in red and flooding into your mouth. The monster collapses, confused once again as the world starts to dim. You shove your face further into its neck, drinking deeply of the still warm life while you can. Its so good and you were so hungry...

The blue jellyfish slamming into your side and lashing you with its stinging tentacles takes you completely by surprise.

[X] Fight!
[X] Flight!
[X] Write-in

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Awareness Roll: 15, additional enemies attracted.
ROUND 2!

The turtle took 16 off of your 30 hp in the time it took you to do its 45. This was largely due to some above average dice rolling for your attacks and below average for it. This would have been a complete route if not for the really low encounter roll that cropped up from the +time factor. I will note that the armored turtle is the most resilient monster you could have chosen to go after in this area.

Oh, and the Jellyfish thing blindsiding you did 5. You're hurt, but not out of the game yet.

For those concerned by the lack of control over the fight after the first roll, you've only just elevated yourself above the level of animal instincts. It'll become more involved as time goes on. For these purposes Fight! will see more combat, any Write-ins with strategy will be worked in to the best of your abilities.

Thanks go to the IRC channel for dice rolls.

If there were other Jellys they would have attacked in a swarm and turtles are solitary. Unless something else (besides you) is out of their territory you're clear from here out.

Though that's a little hard to check with a mass of angry Cnidaria in your face.
