You shift and stretch and generally get comfortable. There weren't many safer places to be that a nice sturdy tree inside your territory, so you settling in for a nice layabout to digest.

Ahhhhh~

Some of the tension, the stress from being in two fights and getting injured, drains away. Not all of it, you've still got your eye out for the mysterious shiny thing.

Time goes by uneventfully. You nap a bit.

As the day begins to wind down, you catch another flash of silver. Carefully, slowly, you turn your attention to it.

This time it pays off.

There is a pack of small reptilian scavengers worrying at the remains of your armored turtle. You don't really mind because you've eaten all the good parts and you're pleasantly full right now. The silver thing (maybe also a scavenger?) has moved in for a look. Its about two feet wide and two feet tall, insectoid in nature but definitely unlike anything you've ever seen. Six legs that hang lazily below its main body, a set (or several) of wings moving fast enough to look like a blur and keep it hovering in the air. The head is large and bulbous, with a single mass of eyes in the center and a fairly wicked looking blades framing its mouth. The silver bug is flying about eight feet up, higher than most monster in this region would casually glance but not so high up that it becomes visible to aerial predators. Whatever it is must be pretty bold though, perhaps possessing a nasty poison or acid, to be so casual.

And silent. Perfectly silent even from this far away. That... is a little disturbing. Nothing moving that fast should make so little sound.

The thing… hovers.

A part of you is like "That's it?" and you have a moment of bemusement that you can be disappointed that a vicious looking creature you've never seen before is boring.

That passes though, as the instincts that have served you so well in your life supply more information to that nascent reasoning.

If it was a predator, why isn't it attacking?

If it was prey, why is it just sitting there in the open?

If it was a scavenger, why isn't it contesting the offal, joining in, or moving on?

Animals don't just stand there, even the beasts such as yourself that wait and attack from ambush wouldn't waste all that energy hovering. It isn't landing, it isn't moving, it isn't hiding its just there.

That makes you more than a little wary.

So you keep watching it.

Eventually the scavengers finish gorging themselves and make to head back into the brush. You realize with a start that they're moving past your tree and if it moves to watch them it will-!

The thing catches sight of you, slightly above it but not really hiding. Watching it. It jerks, then shoots off into the jungle. You growl and consider going after it, but instead decide to ascend to the canopy of your tree. Getting higher up isn't exactly the safest of places to be, but now that you know what you're looking for…

Flashes of silver, moving in an almost straight line. You can catch sight of it occasionally as it darts through the jungle, not bother to find cover or concealment from things watching from above. More odd behavior.

Its heading straight to the Boundary. Even desperate prey avoided that.

Vaguely unsettled, you descend. No need to make a target of yourself when you were fairly certain where the thing was going. If it did have a nest out that way it shouldn't be too hard to find, if you were willing to get that close.

Your stomach grumbles. You've had a nice nap and its getting darker by the minute. Usually you wouldn't be this hungry this fast but your were hurt pretty bad in the last fight. Unlike previous times you could actually do something about keeping up your strength today, instead of confusing and tricking small animals to you like before.

Hunting small prey is easy.

You pluck winged-rabbits out of the air, drag small burrowers from their lairs, and land like a sack of bricks on boars. You snap a snake, and maul a monkey. You even manage to corral a crocodile.

You leg slows you, robs you of some strength, but you're stronger today than you were yesterday. Surprisingly so. Similar to the rapid healing of your petty ills,

And you're still hungry.

Oh all these little morsels took the edge off, but your gut still growls and you find yourself wondering at other tastes you've denied yourself in the past from risk. The running lizard, the acid bird, and the thorny plants. You've sampled them before, but everything seems to taste so different now. You muse on old favorites, the furred cow and bull, and new delicacies. Anything less seems plain by comparison.

You even find, to your shock, your mouth waters at the thought of tyrant wolves. Those massive beasts that hunt in packs and comb the jungles to the north, past the lake and the plains. Far outside of your territory, and dangerous enough that you have never laid your eyes on their blood let alone defeated one. How delicious might they be…

You blink and shake yourself, spitting spare feathers from your most recent snack out in a cloud of greens and purples. Hunger is ruining your concentration, it was well and truly dark out now.
