Actually... Is she speaking English? If so, why? This might be an issue with translation, actually. For example, in Russian "негр" (negr) is not considered offensive as a description of the race. If she's speaking in (a variant of) german... Well, I don't know german, would it actually be offensive?

 

Nothing especially. But if the SI doesn't do something about a scarab after he sees it then he's an idiot. And he isn't. Impulse will probably exist, but there's no obvious reason for the SI to seek him out.

Yes it would be quiet offensive in modern times, though there aren't many polite ways to refer to someone's skin color in German, black would be the least offensive term.

But 'Neger' the word Overgirl likely used isn't acceptable at all and we even changed the names of a chocolate sweet from Negerkuss to Schokokuss because of the implication of the word.

 

They can't happen because the plot that leads to them got derailed. Zoat explained years ago (when the derailment had just happened) that he couldn't think of a reasonable and logical way to have either of them without force feeding the idiot ball... You can probably guess what event has been derailed to hell and changed canon.

 

Honestly, I have never watched Young Justice. I've been meaning to but, it would require I subscribe to the DC Universe service (which is a decent deal). It is still a few months out of rotation before I will subscribe. I have to finish the current season of My Hero Achidamia before I move onto the next service. Next year, I am waiting till most of the season is dubbed to English before resubscribing.

It depends on how the ring is translating it. Because from how it's been described throughout the story I'm inclined to believe it translates meaning more than a literal translation. If she was simply saying the color "black" it would have probably translated as "black."

The fact that it translated to an offensive term in the language it was translated to means she probably meant it that way.

Would Overgirl even know that she's using an offensive term? If I recall correctly "negro" was considered the politically correct term up to the 1960's in the United States, even civil rights leaders like W.E.B Du Bois and Martin Luther King used it. It might be that she is using the politically neutral term that was last used for African-Americans, just that the term is very out of date since said race went extinct before she was even born.

Edit : Given the above, that momentary frown might be more confusion or curiosity than anything. Seeing Lantern Stewart must be like seeing a Tasmanian Tiger for her, and who knows, might not start frothing at the mouth at seeing him, no need for the state to encourage hatred of people that no longer exist, reason why the modern Egyptian state doesn't have a visceral disgust for Hittites.

I already wrote something about that ages ago but it involved a crazy Dark Lantern Paul instead. And it was more about Black Laterns lead by a [DEATH] powered [PAUL] killing the multiverse one universe at a time. Sadly I never finished it. Black Latern Paul might have been the antimatter universe one and he literally could only exist because the Black ring prevented the whole matter + antimatter : Bad news thing.

Then later [DEATH] took advantage of his lack of soul to turn him into the perfect vessel but something went wrong.

 

I was reading through this entire fic again and i got to the part where Lois is with Kal and Paul transporting the moon with zod on it and I was wondering if anyone has any sources on how exactly Kryptonian society functioned, like what was their government look like? was it democratic etc.

the new energy sources, engines-LITERAL antigravity devices- purely used to bolster the military (aside from -maybe- the laser-cutter in TNO)-and it looks like this pattern continues into the 70's/80's...

you look at all the required technology that, say- mass production of their panzerhounds/the vat-grown supersoldiers (like BJ's new body was), or the surgically-altered "mass production""ubersoldats" themselves (if nothing else, the alloys needed to make, for all intents and purposes, plate-steel armor that holds up against modern AP rounds/high-explosives AND is light enough to completely cover something that size with acceptable mobility),
would require the development of- even in Berlin, there's... no signs of derivatives being used for practical/non-violent use- they have all these viable robot frames, and they're still using slave labor to make concrete....

i mean, assuming we had the appropriate education/ a LOT of reference materials on hand,
we'd look at... well- something like the Power Suit (both military and civillian applications-non-invasive mind-machine interface with tactile feedback on grip/context surfaces at the minimum, closed-cycle re-breather with hours/DAYS of endurance with no tanks, effective protection from high-level radiation, all in something that, when folded, is the size of a pair of boots, limited inertial dampening given how well BJ survived falling well over a hundred meters....), or the microminiturised reactor that serves as the final optional upgrade for the LKW, or all the applications for the knowledge/equipment needed for a functional head transplant (the MMI technology/ability to regenerate/cause nervous tissue to grow/heal), or.. or the AI they'd been using since the 40's, and....

You know what could have happened? Hitler decided to raise a family. He had a child. That means he might not have started doing quite so many drugs. Tried to be respectable in person - if insane and a bit extreme. Stopped buying into most of his own Nazi propaganda despite the facts and used it as a tool. He also had tech that made military invasion much easier. Germany might have figured out how to transport soldiers to Russia while in Cryogenic pods. This saved up on food and supplies. He also got technology to keep the marching portion of the troops warm - for example, he could have used Superman to solve logistics issues by bringing food and shelter to the troops in Russia. This allowed them to take over most of it fairly quickly, leaving some people to hold the line fairly Far East, and using Superman to find and attack hidden military installations with X-ray vision. None of England would be safe for military officers anymore and only America would be left. However, with America sitting out most of the war, it didn’t have any allies left over in Europe and entered a peace treaty with the Nazis while they consolidated power over their newly conquered territory - and later willingly joined.

 

Random weird thought: One of the alternate Pauls went into politics in the Britain where he arrived, under the name Paul Eddington.
