Probably best to learn or at least suspect the necessity of that before putting it into practice. We don't know him from Adam at the moment, so while this is probably an important point in our relationship with him, it's also us deciding how Jojo treats people in general when they're perceived as having wronged her. As the acceptance vote says, we've already gone far past taking an eye for an eye in this dispute. Let's make sure our character is capable of recognizing that in a general sense before we start looking for ways to screw over a specific person.

I know nothing bout the series.

But with Dio being said to be a bad guy rather then an abused woobie? TIME TO READ JOJO~!~!~!

 

He's kinda both. ^_^; I get the impression his dad was one of those mentally ill people who, back before psychiatry had come out of the dark ages, self-medicated with alcohol, and so in addition to being neglected and occasionally abused by his father, Dio was pretty innately fucked up to begin with (genetics: the cruellest science). The difference between him and his dad being that Dio is a malevolent, driven genius, and is thus able to ruin a dozen people's lives instead of just his son's and his wife's.

But then, that's just my reading of Speedwagon's 'cut the bullshit' line when Dio tries to blame his murderous tendencies on his crummy childhood.

You let out a sad sigh. "And I am truly sorry to have done you this injury," you reply, laying your hand gently across his bandaged one. "Such was not my intention." You smile awkwardly. "Is it possible for us to begin again, do you think? I will if you will."

Dio's lips quirk upwards. "It would be my pleasure."

Your half-smile becomes a beam of happiness and relief. "Well, then." Leaning over, you plant a kiss on his brow. "Goodnight, brother."

Father questions Dio's bandages at breakfast the next morning, but the boy laughs them off with some story about accidentally turning the hot water tap on full blast and scalding his hands slightly. He credits you with helping him out, and Father smiles contentedly at the two of you. Oh, Father. He's always so happy when his plans come together that you don't mind occasionally having to work to make them do so.

Father has a faculty luncheon at the university to attend, so you and Dio are accompanied to the tailor's by Sebastian, the butler.

The skinny little man in the ironically too-tight waistcoat and shirtsleeves greets you with delight and inquires as to how his latest work was received by your father. After some brief small talk you introduce Dio, and the tailor ushers him onto the platform before the three-way mirror.

"He needs-" you begin, about to launch into a breakdown of the mental list of accoutrements you made, but Dio cuts you off.

"I shall require ten shirts, with collars to match them," he informs the tailor, "along with five pairs of breeches and jackets, one set in houndstooth tweed for hunting and riding and the rest in wool. Also ten pairs of socks, and various ties and items whose details we can discuss at a later time." He turns to the assistant jotting this down. "Of less immediate concern is a mantle or greatcoat for winterwear."

"O-of course, sir," the assistant stammers.

You are floored.

What an awful lot of rot is spoken about the 'ignorance' of the working classes, you think to yourself. Father's lack of interest in fashion makes sense (you're certain that if he cared he could be as dashing as any man-about-town), with his work occupying so much of his time and mind. But none of Father's friends' sons understand things like this (if their clothes are anything to go by, at any rate), and the land-rich boys at school likely aren't aware that houndstooth tweed has a name. The only men you know who care about clothing are the tailor, his assistants, Rush (father's valet, who taught you), and now Dio, another member of the lower orders.

Unfortunately, this means he has opinions.

You try in vain to convince him of his foolishness (though of course not by open argument), but eventually you have to accept that leaving the store with only two yellow suits is the closest you're going to come to victory on this one.

It's a a sorry waste - he was born to wear black, as morbid as the thought strikes you. So many gentlemen of your acquaintance wear dark colours, but Dio's the only one you've met who doesn't let them wear him right back; rather than being washed out, they enhance his pale skin and golden-

"Jojo?"

You shake yourself back into reality. "Forgive me, Dio, my mind was elsewhere." For some reason it doesn't feel right, keeping up that nickname you gave him; it might be-

- the stench of rotgut on the old man's breath-

- that it's not so clever after all.

"How long have you been able to do what you did last night?" Dio asks. Sebastian is sitting up front to converse with Mickey, the footman. There's no reason to think anyone can hear either of you conversing.

"... what on earth did I do?" you inquire. It wasn't the right time to ask last night, but now that you've both slept on it there are questions that need answering. "One minute you have my wrists in both your hands, and the next you're bleeding on the floor."

He looks somewhat taken aback. "I was hoping you would be able to tell me." He frowns. "If I were superstitious, I would say a ghost was responsible."

"What?" you gasp. "In heaven's name, why?"

"Because, by whatever means, the source of my wounds was completely invisible," Dio says flatly.

"Invisible?"

"Just so." He looks very serious. "Jojo. We need to determine what happened."

"I should say so!" you declare. Ghosts and wights are one thing, but what if it really was you? What if it happens again?

"Would you describe for me what it is that you remember of the event?"

I'd just like to state for the record that the oblivious choice was by far my favourite option, just because of how fucking hysterical it would have been down the line to see Dio trying to seduce a chick who dismissed him as a potential suitor before either of them had even finished puberty.

And yep, the Joestars are loaded enough to have running water in the house in the 1880s. If you're gonna have a spoiled princess lead, go the full nine, I say.

Also, Sebastian is a shout-out, but not to who you think.

Is anyone irritated by the slightly shippy cast of this latest update? I can make it more neutral, if you like.

Dio says nothing, just looks at you, before going back to looking out at the city.

"In Ogre St," he says, "there's an old man who reads faces for tuppence."

"Reads... faces...?" you ask. "Is it like reading palms?"

"In the sense that there are those who believe a man's fate is written in his face, yes," Dio says, his voice oddly detached, as if wishing to dissuade you from thinking that there's anything fantastical about this subject. He glances at you over his shoulder. "Would you like to meet him?"

To say you are shocked is an understatement. "Now?"

He smiles. "Far more convenient than making a second trip at some later date, would you not agree? Even if he turns out to be a harmless crank, it should prove amusing."

"You think someone in the most dangerous and altogether filthy neighbourhood in the city can tell my fortune just by looking at me?"

"Is it any more unlikely than a ghost attacking me for laying a hand on you?" he asks, still in that calm, neutral tone. It's almost hypnotic. "You have some strange genius watching over you, Jojo, like the Chevalier de Seingalt or your namesake Joan of Arc before you. Do you deserve to know less of your destiny than they of theirs?"

You stare at him warily for a moment. Could this be some strange revenge for last night? But why now, when you'll have Sebastian with you?

"Well, it was only a thought." Dio returns his attention to the passing scenery.

What if you had chosen the sickly strange-girl option?


February 28th, 1888

The door opens.

"Joanna..."

Your eyesight is dim at best, now, but you can still hear his voice. Your oldest friend.

The man that, three months ago - has it really been only three months? - asked you to be his bride.

You refused at first, of course. How could you do such a thing to him? You've already taken his childhood and youth, is that not enough? Should he give his whole life to an invalid?

You'll never forget what he said to that, eyes burning. "I am not marrying an invalid; I am marrying you."

The ring hasn't left your finger since.

You're curious what has him so happy. You haven't heard him sound so pleased and self-assured in over a year. Perhaps he's attained that position with the archaeology department? You were worried his taking so much time off school to be with you would have hurt his chances, even with Father vouching for him.

You try to speak up, to let him know you can hear him, but your body will not respond.

"I have excellent news." You feel him stroke your hair, and kiss your forehead as he did when you were children. "You don't need to go through all this any more. No disease will separate us any longer."

You sigh. Another specialist, then. Another round of pills to be vomited up within the hour and salves for rashes that don't exist and so-called 'shock' treatment.

No, no more shock treatment. For you or anyone else at that quack's hands. Dio saw to that.

If only everyone would just give up on you, you think in your darker moments. If only you could die, everyone could move forward; the servants could get back to their real work, instead of having to care for you on the side. Father could go back to teaching; he says he doesn't miss it, but he's always been a bad liar.

Dio could make a far smarter match than you, you're sure, once he establishes himself. And he could have children, a proper family.

Maybe, if he had a daughter, he could name her for you, and you could watch over them from heaven. You think you'd like that.

"You must be brave, Joanna. I swear to you: not even Death himself shall take you from me."

The pain of the stone tentacles stabbing into your brain is dwarfed by the rush of relief at the sudden instinctual knowledge that your suffering is at an end, along with your life. You slip gratefully into darkness.

When you awake, your first thought is one of sheer joy. I can see again!

Your second is of the strange dryness and emptiness within you.

Blinking, you look around for Dio, and find him smiling down at you from his usual chair. He looks even more handsome than you remember.

You reach for him, and weakly manage to say, "... thirst..."

He laughs in plain delight. He lifts you out of bed as though you weigh nothing at all, and carries you bridal-style out of the bedroom.

"Marvelous. Let's find you someone to drink."
