Video Games General

Did I just spend all my luck here? Or is it a sign from the RNGesus himself that everything will be alright? :V

It's likely a pre-programmed hook to bait you back into playing(and paying) for their game.

Probably looks at your time-since-last-play combined with checking how much money you have spent to determine how willing they are to give you freebies to get you hooked again.

Every last one of those games with randomized lootboxes is nothing but an online casino, but better(for them) because they'll never have to pay out anything at all. Just a flood of easy cash flowing in from a horde of suckers.

Eh, maybe, but it's just fun to believe otherwise. Also, if there is such a system in place, I would think it would be known already. And many would cheese the shit out of it.

Regardless, my policy on such games is to not spend a cent on anything, so it's just a free rare for me.

Decided to give up on Arknights today as well, even if I got what I wanted from that banner.

Honestly, looking back, the story and events people talked the most about are way overhyped. Frostnova was good, but it still felt like a one-sided talk with how they handled the doctor. And for all the importance they give Theresa, we saw very goddamn little of her.

And now I hear shit that for all the conflicts we fight in, the Royal Guards could come in and whomp every side present laughing?

Yeah, no, I'm done.

Edit: Come to think of if, between Arknights and Azur Lane... Yostar do good characters and settings, but are not that good with actual stories, huh?

Well, they're done by different devs. AL's developer team is Manjuu, while AK is Hypergriph, which is formed by former members of GFL.

Yostar mostly functions as their publisher, localization, and PR team.

With Azur Lane the main problem is that the setting is a confusing mess involving time-travel, alternate timelines and historical reenactments. Which allows for neat stuff like the peaceful port-life to be just as canon as the more serious war-stories or the modified historical events, some of which really work for feels. Or the event of Shinano where she travelled between the different worlds of Azur Lane and saw the peaceful Port-Timeline...

Azur Lane has decently good story within individual events. (i.e. Bismarks event, U-556 event, Garlic shark event.) Some are weaker, some are stronger. That said, the overall storyline is a mess that is confusing as hell to follow...

And, from what I hear, crazy bad localization, since CN, JP and english versions apparently tell 3 different things for the same scene. I saw sheer frustration about that, which does NOT help coherence.

Oh yeah. I remember that. I think it was something like in one version of the scene, the character talking was passing on a message from someone else important, and yet in another language that character talking was some sort of defector or something that was giving out inside info or something.

Yostar has been replacing their translator team 3 times in a row, now. Wonder if something's up too in the newest event.

Also: Laughing at these idiots claiming it'll crash the studio. New Vegas was still buggier than this for a long time and Bethesda... well, they were fine until Fallout 76, but that was so much more than just the bugs.
A man can hope. Sure it won't happen, but it would be nice if it actually affected the company bad enough that they would try to improve.

That's morbidly impressive. Normally it's only the english localisation that fucks with things but managing to get a 3 way mess going on is a new one.

It's because of the way localization happens. In this case, CN script is localized by JP which may or may not be edited for reasons, where EN then borrow the JP script because of reasons. As a result, things naturally get messy.

Then put in the general "Why the fuck should I look into the later Japanese scripts to see if I translated this earlier script right? That would mean quality work..." and "Jelly-filled doughnuts are the DNA of the memery..."

Well, localization in general rarely received the proper treatment. Still, the fact that even AL's TL at its worst "could've been worse" makes me realize what a sad state this entire sector of the gaming industry is in right now.

I'm not sure if that's better or worse then when they read the script and decide they'll just make shit up anyway because they think it'll sound better. Looking at you shadowverse.

Depending on who's doing the localization one may find fan translations or more embarrassingly google translate to be doing a better job.

I was at a Sega panel on localizing games like the Yakuza franchise and Valkyria Chronicles during PAX West a few years ago. One of the large elements they brought up is that localizing a game is not simply sitting down with a Japanese to English dictionary. Scenes may require different tone or voice acting given different expectations or in some cases outright rewritten due to cultural differences. The example they used was after a substory in Yakuza 0 where Majima makes a dad joke level pun involving a scam religion. In the original Japanese script, what he said was an idiom loosely translating to "and the futon flew away." While it makes sense in Japan, we would have been confused about what a futon had to do with beating up a creepy guru, hence changing it to what we saw in the western release.

They did admit that sometimes it doesn't completely work, as the showed with a well known "I peacocked your mom," meme from Yakuza 2. And that they not only kept it for the Kiwami remake of 2, but included a line about how "something must have gotten lost in translation."

There's having trouble with jokes that don't translate well and then there's having a set of 9 characters who's cards all have the same death lines in Japanese who you then in English have half of said chars saying something completely different and the other half saying the original lines. The excuse doesn't hold up when you're rewriting wholesale things that could both be easily translated (seeing how you did it for half of them) and are fucking up things which were intended to be thematic in the process.

Had to redownload Octopath but its still fun to play.

So Far I've started on Olberic, Cyrus, Tressa, and Primrose.

...and no matter how much i think it, Therese's actions in Cyrus's Story is just...the hell man?

Yes. Yes he would have.

SIgh. Still annoyed at that tho.

The combat is finicky too. Need those skill points.

played Super Metroid (Redux romhack) all night

99% items after leaving Lower Norfair is the worst. I'm just missing a single missile tank and have no idea where it is. Never mind. I checked one last time and it was the lower-left one in the Wrecked Ship. Phew.

You like that, you should try the Super Metroid/Link to the Past combo Randomizer :p

I can't play vanilla SM again after playing Redux. The control QOL improvements (making it play more like Fusion and ZM) are just too good. The only improvement Redux doesn't have is the ability to cycle between area maps on the pause menu.

E: Tho Mother Brain turns into a joke when you can fire missiles as quickly as in Fusion.

I'm in love with this game. Rhythm game + platformer is a novel combination.

So, got to a hilarious bit. Collecting Hayden and heading into the BFG 10,000. "You can't just shoot a hole into Mars!" *silent but clearly conveying: Watch Me*

Then of course the terrified tech just leaning further and further back in his chair. And the trooper that just lets you take his gun.

I have to be honest though, the audio logs in the previous level... gave me the giggly chills. The Destroyer is here.

The best part of that game is probably Vega. In that scene in particular, the moment Hayden goes "You can't just shoot a hole into Mars!", Vega immediately update your objective list with "Blow a hole into Mars". That AI is fucking hilarious and I love him. :D

I was kinda inspired to write a Vega/Skynet shipfic after that.

But yes, Vega is fantastic and I was super, super glad in Doom 2016 when the Slayer saved him. I'm even happier he's still around and being sassy.

A liiiiitle afraid Hayden's going to kill him though, now that he's in the station.

Edit: "I'm not afraid of that guy, if he comes in here I-ohshit."

Also: "That's a gun, not a teleporter!" "Only if you're a pussy!"

EDITED
